a beautiful and sad story about reincarnation. I liked it better than Gerstein's Mountains of Tibet.

A youth librarian shared this book with me when it came out...she thought it would interest me.
A dog is reborn many times, and each time learns a little about love and loving actions, and each time he's reborn into better circumstances to learn.
This would be a great book to use for a preschool Dharma School throughout a year, perhaps one of the dog's lives per lesson. I would focus on the aspects of his life that helped the dog become more loving.

This was another OneWorldLibrary book for children. And another great one. A very nice story about reincarnation. My kids are interested in religion at the moment so it is nice to find good stories like this. Be warned though that some people find it a tearjerker. My kids are still pretty clinical about death.

A beautiful message on Buddhist reincarnation beliefs, Samsara Dog shows us what must be learned (in one life or as many as it takes) in order to pass from this world to Nirvana. I gave Samsara Dog five stars, one for each tissue I used as I cried my way thru the book. Australian author and artist.

A beautiful book both the story and the art. Bamboo Shorts is another one in this genre, also a beautiful story and art.

By far the best modern chidren's book I have read. Mind you, I don't read a lot of them, but this book creeps into your heart.

I know I gave this book 5 stars and I'm filing it under "kid," but DO NOT READ YOUR KID THIS BOOK! Seriously. It is far too sad. I cried IN THE LIBRARY! I had to just put it back. It's completely heart-wrenching. Far too sad for a kid is my official judgment, though I can see its use possibly for older children, children who are coping with extreme sadness anyway and/or teaching children about reincarnation.
I feel the same way about the book "The Giving Tree," More...

This book is an example of a beautiful, poetic, uplifting way of presenting some Buddhist philosophies. It is not particularly preachy (which appeals to me), but it illustrates some key principles on death and dying in a way that is attractive to readers of many ages. I recommend it fully and wholeheartedly to anyone searching for a book about Buddhism or death and dying, or just for a lovely children's book.

Invisibly subtitled: How to make Jen bawl at the reference desk in five minutes or less. Ow.
An excellent and wonderfully tangible way to begin teaching about Buddhism, but too wrenching for the younger crowd, except perhaps as a hand to hold through grief. (But I'm still angry at my sixth grade teacher for forcing us to read Beauty, which broke my heart in places of which I was previously unaware [he was a grade-a cretin for many reasons, but it's that book I'm bitterest about]).

Intended to teach children the Buddhist concept of reincarnation, this gentle tale also teaches compassion as a dog is reincarnated from one canine lifetime to another, slowly learning how to be of service to another and how to love and be loved. Could be used for both children and adults to stimulate discussion on the topics of reincarnation and Buddhist beliefs. Could also be a good book to read to a child dealing with death, especially of a beloved pet.

I bought this book for my two-year-old son and he loves it. He doesn't understand the theme or message of the book, but he likes to hear me read it to him and he likes the pictures. I cringe when he wants me to read it to him, though, because I cry a little every time I read it. It's so incredibly beautiful. Whether you believe in reincarnation or not, it's one you should pick up.

Stunning. I started crying about 6 pages in and didn't stop. The watercolors are phenomenal and gorgeous and the story is painful, but redemptive. A good way to introduce children to the Buddhist concept of Samsara (the cycle of life/death/rebirth). I would recommend it for children 5 and up, however, as it is very emotional.

THE MOST AMAZING children's book. BEAUTIFUL illustrations. It's all about love and growth, told through one dog who has lived many lives. It makes me cry every time. It's especially good for dog-lovers, and I think it might be better for adults than for kids. READ it!!!

My soul sister gave me this book for my birthday yesterday. It's a children's book about dog reincarnation. I sobbed. I don't know how many of us there are that believe in dog reincarnation, but if you're one of us, you'll think it's beautiful.

A childrens book; however, a bit intense, but I think perfect for people wanting to expose their little ones to other cultures and beliefs. Also good for animal lovers.

This is the only children's book that I ever cried from reading. That said it was a bit heavy handed. Nevertheless it's a good story.
