I had no clue where this story was headed! I chose not to read the summary, making for a more interesting surprise.

A great first chapter that creates questions in the reader’s mind that are slowly answered over the course of the novel. It isn’t until the final chapter that all are finally concluded.

The story then pulls the reader back in time to when Clive’s real trouble began. For anyone suffering from arachnophobia, this might not be the story for you. I suffer from this fear, yet was fascinated by the plot. Grotesque as the idea was, I found myself compelled to read, to the end and put my mind at rest with the resolution. At least, I had hoped for a resolution. A short way into the story, I felt the urge to grab a Q-tip and give my auditory canal a good cleaning! Was my ear plugged? That twinge of pain in my head, is it merely Jason messing with my mind?

Yes, gross as it was, my morbid curiosity pushed me to continue. Clive, an ordinary man, wished for a better life, one with a better paying job and a relationship with the girl he loved. The saying “careful what you wish for” rings true in his case. He found himself in extraordinary circumstances. Initially frightening, he discovered the immediate benefits of listening to his new companion. His life improved, his wishes granted. But for how long?

What Hides Within will take drag you along, willing or otherwise, on Clive’s journey as he discovers exactly what deal he’s made, with whom and what it will cost him in the end. Lessons within the story will be learned, but will it be too late? At least one thing can be learned by the reader: choose your terms carefully.

The energy of the book kept the story moving. The thoughts and actions of the characters were, at times, amusing. In the end, I was left feeling the story resolved, yet potential for more. Those who enjoy a thrilling, yet dark novel will enjoy What Hides Within.

This book was a delightful surprise. It can be categorized as drama/thriller/mystery/horror/dark humor - all qualities I love when watching movies but rarely the genres I choose when reading. When I started the book I made sure to keep an open mind since it isn't my usual type of read. It wasn't long before I got "sucked in" - I was captivated early on. I really enjoyed the diversity among the characters and the dynamics between them. I think there are at least one or two characters we can all either relate to or find reminiscent of people in our own lives! There were serious & suspenseful moments, disturbing & twisted moments, creepy & nightmarish moments, gory & graphic moments and then there were others that literally made me LOL!

As with many quality books, the more I read the more I wanted to read. I enjoyed the story's mystery, I was continually trying to guess the pieces of the puzzle and how they would ultimately fit together. I really enjoyed not only the plot but I also appreciated its flow and pace. Every couple of chapters my theories kept changing and evolving; the book certainly kept me on my toes!

I also must pay respect to the author's accuracy and details of several different subject matters within the story. I must say I am impressed with the apparent amount of research that went into the writing of this book. The humor, I can't forget the humor! At the most unexpected moments there would be a line, colloquial saying, or contemporary reference that tickled my funny bone (hence the laughing out loud). There is definitely some colorful language throughout but I wouldn't call it vulgar, it feels appropriate to the character development, the context of the scene(s) and it certainly adds that little extra something that keeps your attention.

There were twists and turns throughout which kept an analytical mind like mine very busy trying to predict where the story was headed right down to the final few chapters. Like I said, this book was a delightful surprise and opened my mind to a couple new genres. All in all, I would undoubtedly recommend this book - two thumbs up!(less)

This mix of psycho thriller, dark humour and supernatural works incredibly well. The pace is well orchestrated and there are no dull moments. The story held my attention to the fabulously discomforting end and I was reluctant to put the book down.

The main male characters are well developed each with their own short comings and nasty little traits. Despite having almost no redeeming characteristics Clive was very well portrayed and understandable. You may not like him but you will certainly feel for him as he descends into his own pit.

Parent constructs some wonderfully descriptive sentences. His style and oratory are evident throughout. His skill lies in his use of dialogue. Conversations are natural and never stilted. Some of the narrative is exquisitely constructed and a world of meaning appears from the briefest of paragraphs.

If I had to criticise this book it would be for the language. Parent’s use of unusual sentence constructions sometimes gets the better of him and sound forced and unnatural. I found that passive constructions were overused for my taste. I am a big fan of active verbs. The story was told rather than shown in many instances and it weakened the narrative. For me the language of the book was enough to detract from the story in places and it is here that, for me, he loses half a point.

There were a couple of loose ends that I would have liked tied up. There was also a long explanation in the last chapter that I didn't feel added anything to the story.

I recommend this book to anyone but the most squeamish. The strong language, descriptions of sex and violence were in keeping with the overall character of the story and the personalities within it.

Jason Parent is a talented author and I look forward to watching him progress and develop his art.(less)

There are times when you put down a book and say, “Man, I can’t wait for the next chapter in this story.” This isn’t going to be one of those times. This is a time when I may look carefully around, and wonder, perhaps, what’s in that dark corner of my backyard for awhile, instead.

Jason’s novel, What Hides Within, is an interesting take on the whole concept of a deal with the devil. Being the sort of thriller that it is, there isn’t much I can describe that wouldn’t be a spoiler. The story’s central spine is the tale of Clive Menard, a low-level nobody making his way through life, who by accident stumbles into something very bad – and then watches (and listens) as it unravels the fabric of his life and weaves it into something more sinister.

With a thriller like this a writer face a number of challenges. You want to keep the story moving briskly, yet you want the surprises – those moments that jump out at you like the ghoulies in a haunted house - spaced not too far apart. And for the most part, Jason delivers quite well. But the novel is so littered with anti-heroes everywhere you turn that I found it at times depressing to read. After the twelfth person whose life is hell-on-earth, it loses its impact. And after all, when you make your deal with the devil, yes, you’re going to get a bait-and-switch. But can you at least let us, the readers, vicariously enjoy the bait for a moment? If this writer has anything to say about it, it's a dark world that never gets any lighter even for a moment.

I read the Kindle version and the structural issues in the construction were disconcerting. It’s a convention as a writer to include some sort of scene change cue for the reader when the book’s point of view changes – extra lines, a set of marks, a timestamp, something. Throughout most of the book, this doesn’t happen, so you’ll be reading a passage and suddenly realize five sentences in “Oh, we’re not in his head, we’re in her head.” I thought it might just be a writing style choice by this author, but then I found one such break in a middle chapter. It, sadly, lives alone in the novel. There are other formatting errors as well (text shifting to centered, a certain character’s dialogue being indicated in different ways in the same conversation, homophones, misspellings), and like a cherry on top, a personal peeve of mine – if you’re going to say someone has a medical condition, you should as an author take the time to learn to spell it correctly. It's “Tourette's syndrome.” All of these serve as speed-bumps to the reader, making it a bit more of a chore to read the novel than it should be.

Still, despite a few plot holes that wander away without good explanation, as a whole the book makes for an entertaining, if somewhat creepy, read. So, if you’re a “bump-in-the-night” sort of reader, you’ll find the book worthwhile. Not my particular cup of tea in the end, but structurally, it’s sound.

I’d give it 3.5 stars, but since we have to do whole numbers, Jason gets the benefit of the round. 4 stars.

Part psychological thriller, part surreal horror, part contemporary satire, this book is one of the most unusual and accomplished books I've read in a while.

Though the plot is clever, for me, the best part of the novel is the writing itself. The descriptions are visceral ("his grandmother using an old-school, finger method to relieve his constipation at nine") and above all there is a strong and consistent narrative voice. The dialogue, the inner monologues ("What bearing does my constipation twenty-five years ago have upon the issue of whether or not something is living in my head today? Did something crawl into my balloon knot when I was a teenie-tot, temporarily clogging my anus, then slowly working its way up through my body to my brain over the course of two decades?"), the dark humour inherent in Clive's way of looking at life. The very mundanity of his work at Harcourt Insurance with its petty office politics, rumors, and juvenile sex talk is a good counterpoint to the increasingly bizarre scenarios in which he finds himself. Clive is that rare kind of protagonist: an idiot, a loser whom you can't help feeling sorry for as things seem to spiral out of his control. The supporting cast are also well-drawn, particularly the male characters like Derek and Kevin.

There are very minor things - a couple of typos, a bit of repetition of Chester's story, and perhaps an overstated ending - but the whole book is so imaginative and well-executed that I'm giving it five stars. An author to follow.

The author did a better job with law enforcement technique than many mystery and crime writers I've read! I also appreciated his obvious research on arachnids.

The book has a decidedly “modern” feel – it’s difficult to describe what I mean, but you know you’re in the present day through the expressions used by the characters, the cultural references, and the general tone of the writing. The author didn't hesitate to employ his ample vocabulary. The tone throughout is slightly ironic or sarcastic, particularly when told through the eyes of the male lead. You probably know someone right now who seems to behave, think, and act like him. The use of current events and references adds to the humor, particularly in comparisons. There were a few twists and turns in the plot, with each character carrying a different element. I did make a guess at part of the ending well in advance, but that didn't spoil it for me.

The only gripes I have is that there were some occasional jumps in point-of-view that left me not knowing whose head I was looking out of for a couple paragraphs, although I eventually figured it out, and some occasional misuse of that ample vocabulary; for example, at one point I think he was trying to reference Tourette’s Syndrome, but wrote “Terets” (either that, or it was a cultural reference that was lost on me). There was also a section where part of the solution to the mystery lay in the fact that the perpetrator was left-handed; that’s a really old trope, and while it wasn't a large part of the plot, I found myself wishing he’d come up with something a little more unique – especially given the uniqueness of the book.

Overall, this is a very good read for people who enjoy multiple different genres, for fans of the slightly scary, tongue-in-cheek, almost-believable. I wouldn't be surprised to find in the future that this author develops a comfortable little cult following if he continues to put out stuff like this.

With the author's use of local landmarks and his subtle pop culture references with a unique brand humorous undertones, I could hear the book's "voice". What Hides Within is one of those unique books you have a hard time pinning down. While there are elements of horror there are also so many other things going on (bits and pieces that you might find at home in a thriller, suspense or action novel)that you get wrapped up in all the threads.

Clive Menard is classic every man, he's rude, repressed and takes most of the elements of his life for granted. He has a close female friend he sometimes has sex with, coworkers he barely tolerates and a roommate who never seems to stick around when he's there. Overall he's not a happy guy but he's also not willing to put forth the effort to change the things that leave him unhappy. Then comes the crazy accident which changes everything.

Clive soon finds himself with a troubling hearing condition that escalates into strange dreams and eventually neurosurgery. At first he thinks he's lost his mind but soon after it becomes clear that something has taken up residence in his head and that something has plans.

Surrounded by bombings, death and changing people Clive doesn't see any of the tragic events in his life coming until they've slapped him in the face. He's joined in this journey by a troubled brother, his equally troubled daughter, a voracious detective, his friends Morgan and Derek and that troubling roommate of his. Part of the appeal of the novel is following all of these threads right to the finale which is quite satisfying. If I were going to compare it to anything I'd say that What Hides Within makes for a very detailed and interesting Tales From the Crypt story and it's well worth your time. Just wait until you meet Chester, she's my favorite!(less)

I have to be careful talking about the plot because spoilers would ruin the story. If you have spider issues, stay away from this book! Chester is a black widow spider who takes up residence in Clive’s ear and the reason why is one of the surprise twists of the story. I liked Chester, but I felt he acted more like an angry teenager than what he is supposed to be, which I can’t tell you without ruining things. I really didn’t like the main character Clive. He is an ass for the most part and I never really felt sympathetic to his plight or any of the other characters for that matter, but this might have been the intention of the author. There wasn’t much suspense until near the end of the story so it was easy to put the book down, but I always wanted to go back and find out what was going on.

It seems like I found a lot wrong with the story but like I said earlier, it is a good editor away from a great book. I think it is still worth the read for those who like a serial killer horror story. I read a variety of genres, everything from Oedipus to The Haunted Vagina and I have loved (and hated) everything in between, so I don’t want any grief over what I am going to say . I think this is a guy’s book. Some stories appeal to both sexes and some appeal to only one. Movies are the same way. A guy’s idea of love and relationships is different. Girls won’t like Clive, he is a loser and a jerk. Having said this, there are a lot of female reviewers who have given this book 4 and 5 star ratings. So there you go… make sure to check out what others are saying.

This book was not a good read, but a great read. Jason does a great job developing his characters and making the reader either hate or love them. I highly recommend What Hides Within. It is very effective on two levels. On a literal level, the plot is fast-moving, the characters are realistic, and the climax is exciting. It is well-written and concise. As I approached the mid-point of the story, I didn't want to put the book down.

Let's just say I've been watching spiders in my house a lot more closely than I used to. The premise is probably one of most people's creepiest nightmares - a spider crawling into your head and making a home there. This was no ordinary spider though. "Chester" at first seems to be good company, someone to talk to, but as things become more and more bizarre around Clive, he has to start wondering what else Chester is up to.

I liked this book, you can definitely see that Jason Parent´s writing style was influenced by Joe Hill (whom I love!). Even though I believe this book could be shorter than it was (sometimes I wanted to say: I got it already, stop repeating yourself!) in the end it was an interesting story and certainly original.

Early review book received from goodreads giveaways. After reading this book I am fully prepared to start wearing a pantyhose on my head at all times. Reminiscent of Scott siglers infected series to a point. This book has all the factors of a great horror novel. Recommended to all horror fans. I give out five stars for the creep out factor alone. Can't wait to read more from this author.
