Inside all of us, there is darkness. Inside Clive, it's tangible, and it's aching to get out.

What Hides Within tells the story of a man held captive by an unknown evil. Clive Menard is a spineless slacker leading an ordinary existence. But when Chester enters his life, it becomes far from ordinary.

A disheveled Clive stands alone in a hospital waiting room. A series of inci...more

I had no clue where this story was headed! I chose not to read the summary, making for a more interesting surprise.

What Hides Within begins with Clive Menard, a previous patient angry at the physician who botched up the surgery on his brain. A great first chapter that creates questions in the reader’s mind that are slowly answered over the course of the novel. It isn’t until the final chapter that all are finally concluded.

The story then pulls the reader back in time to when Clive’s real troub...more

This book was a delightful surprise. It can be categorized as drama/thriller/mystery/horror/dark humor - all qualities I love when watching movies but rarely the genres I choose when reading. Even as someone who is not likely within its target audience, I was still intrigued when I read the book's back flap summary.

When I started the book I made sure to keep an open mind since it isn't my usual type of read. It wasn't long before I got "sucked in" - I was captivated early on. I really enjoyed t...more

We all have our internal demons. Clive has his fair share. The difference is that when Clive talks to his demon she answers back.

Jason Parent weaves a deliciously disturbing story that will leave you searching the corners of your bedroom for webs. The story is compelling and carries the reader along to the next twist, the next horror with tantalising hints and drops of suggestion. I don’t wish to give away any of the story, you should read it. This mix of psycho thriller, dark humour and superna...more

Because the author's words evoke visual and aural images, perhaps the best way to describe them is by comparing them to works from cinema and music. The protagonist Clive is a composite of Clint Eastwood's the Good, Lee Van Cleef's the Bad, and Eli Wallach's the Ugly. Jason is a rare author who allows the reader to fill in the blanks (no detailed descriptions or lengthy backstories). This lets the reader's imagination run amok. His sparse description of Clive at the b...more

First of all, I have to say, I love the name Clive. Second of all, I love the exploration of darkness which is very intriguing. There is a self discovery in that, which most do not appreciate. This story is a guilty pleasure, a sort of story you don't want to admit you like. I often found myself being able to let wild with my imagination. I do not know what genre to specifically classify it as. There are many subplots throughout the story but they merge toward the end. There were a few structura...more

Spiders. Need I say more? I had nightmares for days. There is nothing better than a horror story that has you twitching long after you've finished. Definitely Recommended.

I received “What Hides Within” from the author, Jason Parent, with the expectation that I would provide an honest review. As I an avid reader of books that fall within the horror genre I feel like I have read it all. I was happy to have my faith in innovation restored by this story. With this book, Parent does a great job of taking reader expectations and turning them on their head. In the spirit of not spoiling the story I won’t discuss much of the plot and actual story line. I will say that c...more

There are times when you put down a book and say, “Man, I can’t wait for the next chapter in this story.” This isn’t going to be one of those times. This is a time when I may look carefully around, and wonder, perhaps, what’s in that dark corner of my backyard for awhile, instead.

Jason’s novel, What Hides Within, is an interesting take on the whole concept of a deal with the devil. Being the sort of thriller that it is, there isn...more

Jason Parent's What Hides Within appears to relate what happens when a talking spider takes up residence inside Clive's head. About a third of the way through the book I wondered how the author was going to sustain this premise because, by that point, there is enough material for an excellent, long short story. (Like a sophisticated, contemporary re-working of Ovid's Metamorphoses and Kafka's Metamorphosis). But the plot twists and builds and I just wanted to carry on reading to see how it would...more

This book is kind of a genre-bender, a cross between mystery, suspense, and horror, with a little humor thrown in. When I sat down to read a chapter or two, I invariably found myself reading more than I meant to; sometimes I ended up staying up later than I’d intended (yes, I was reading it right before bed. No, that’s not a great idea.).

The characters were well-differentiated and unique. As a frequent reader of mystery and crime, I was partial to the lead female detective, myself. The author d...more

Though this is not the typical type of book I read, I enjoyed "What Hides Within" immensley. It was recommended. to me by a friend, and I am happy it was. With the author's use of local landmarks and his subtle pop culture references with a unique brand humorous undertones, I could hear the book's "voice". His highly descripitve narrative helped me imagine what all the characters and settings looked like, which made the book flow like a movie in my mind. I found myself staying up until the wee h...more

"What Hides Within" is a compelling horror/thriller story which is tightly written, fast paced and full of unexpected twists and turns.

After being a nurse for many years, I've been desensitized to blood and violence. Yet, there were moments when I shuddered to myself as I read the graphic violent scences in this book.

Clive, the main character, has been taken over by a foreign identity. I cringed as I watched his life unravel into a d...more

I wasn't sure what I thought of What Hides Within when I first started reading it. In the opening half of the novel there are so many surreal things going on that you sort of think you might be watching a late night B movie in your head. But then you start getting all the finer bits of the story and everything starts falling into place.I really enjoyed it.

What Hides Within is one of those unique books you have a hard time pinning down. While there are elements of horror there are also so many ot...more

This is a story that almost was. There is a fabulously creepy plot with a cool twist and you have no idea what the evil is until the very end. But… for me, it gets lost in its execution. There are many subplots going on that merge together at the end, but they don’t feel connected to the main story and only added unnecessary length to the book. With the help of a top-notch editor this book could be a 4.5 sheeper, but I think since this is a debut book and most of its problems were with the techn...more

I received this book as part of the read to review program. The summary sounded interesting and I thought it might be a good read. I was pleasantly surprised. This book was not a good read, but a great read. Jason does a great job developing his characters and making the reader either hate or love them. This book kept me guessing through several twists and turn. The thing I loved the most about this book was that it was so different from so many of the cookie cutter books that are out there in t...more

I highly recommend What Hides Within. It is very effective on two levels. On a literal level, the plot is fast-moving, the characters are realistic, and the climax is exciting. It is well-written and concise. As I approached the mid-point of the story, I didn't want to put the book down.

On a symbolic level, the title and the theme of the novel invite the reader to take a closer look at himself and society in general. What can be the trigger for certain thoughts and actions? Who is capable of wh...more

Let's just say I've been watching spiders in my house a lot more closely than I used to. The premise is probably one of most people's creepiest nightmares - a spider crawling into your head and making a home there. This was no ordinary spider though. "Chester" at first seems to be good company, someone to talk to, but as things become more and more bizarre around Clive, he has to start wondering what else Chester is up to.

Chester makes certain promises to Clive and it later appears that Clive ha...more

What Hides Within is a about an ordinary guy who is possessed by an evil force that invades his brain one day while out kayaking with his girlfriend. He only discovers its true nature after brain-surgery-gone-wrong. This sends him on a whirling adventure through his ordinary life, twisting and turning his personal relationships, uncovering a malicious plot that endangers his life and those around him. Parent’s characters are real-life, his humor is dark and sometimes biting. This book is fast-pa...more

4.5 stars, rounded up for originality, and that all important "CREEPY" factor!

WHAT HIDES WITHIN is a complex narrative combining a bomb-weilding sociopath, an unmotivated man whose best friend talks to him from inside of his head, and a no-nonsense detective. Add in a plethora of sarcasm-laced interludes, and Jason Parent has penned a riveting novel that crosses over several genres. This one will keep you on your toes all throughout, questioning everything you "think" you know is happening. From...more

I liked this book, you can definitely see that Jason Parent´s writing style was influenced by Joe Hill (whom I love!). Even though I believe this book could be shorter than it was (sometimes I wanted to say: I got it already, stop repeating yourself!) in the end it was an interesting story and certainly original.

Early review book received from goodreads giveaways. After reading this book I am fully prepared to start wearing a pantyhose on my head at all times. Reminiscent of Scott siglers infected series to a point. This book has all the factors of a great horror novel. Recommended to all horror fans. I give out five stars for the creep out factor alone. Can't wait to read more from this author.

Jason spends his days writing, but it’s mostly drafting legal memoranda as a civil litigator in New Bedford, MA—not exactly a venue conducive to creativity. But during his lunch breaks and after hours, you can often find him at one of the area’s charming coffee shops, huddled over an unadulterated iced coffee with a pen and paper in hand (somewhat old-school in his methods). Hopefully, when you se...more
