Recommends it for: Anyone who loves a great medieval story!
I loved this book. Ranald is a tough Hero but a caring and lovable one. His bride Catalin is fiesty. I loved the two of them when they finally give in and show how much they care for each other. They grew up together and had feelings for one another many years ago.

the prose was good, and the beginning chapters really set up the drama beautifully. i was quite hopeful this would be a good one.

but then it fairly quickly squandered its promise, spiraling down into yucky -- stupid misunderstandings that are critical to sustaining plot tension, neanderthal man antics (and this after our hero was initially set up to be a much different, better person! disappointing AND incoherent), "fiesty, fiery," shrieking women. gross. really, i saw no reason these two
This book is set in 1128 on the border of Scotland. A father who has twin son's believes the superstition that one most be evil and the other good makes the choice of who will be good and who will be evil. Everything goes wrong when the one he choose to keep with him dies and he needs the other to marry the first sons betroth. Very good the author did a wonderful job on her descriptions and I think capturing the cruelty of the times.

After our daughters were married and moved away, my husband and I retired. It didn't take long for the "empty nest" syndrome to strike. It took much longer before we did something about it, though. Fifteen years! We bought a little long-coat Chihuahua who became the terror of the neighborhood - even on a leash. When he was three years old and not even attmpting to be friendly with anyone other tha ...more
