When reading the new novel by R.J.Ashby and the first in a series called The Airmen (this first book is titled The Pirates of Aireon) I was quickly reminded of a series of Sci Fi books from my youth called The Lensmen series by the famous E.E. Doc Smith. Like that series, in this book we are quickly thrown into a world where men are men and women are even more dangerous. This is real swashbuckler reading where the action starts on the very first page and does not stop until the last page. The au...more
This was a GoodReads giveaway. It was a pleasure to read.
Early in the story, I could not help but envision this like that animated movie "Treasure Planet". It is much better, but the whole concept of flying pirate ships doing battle in the skies filled my mind. I did like the story. You could relate to the characters. They were a bit stereotyped and predictable, but still very enjoyable. The story is complete on its own. I sometimes tire of trilogies if I think the author is just stretching out...more

One of the reasons I enjoy reading so much and delving into books are the millions of different worlds waiting to be discovered. And it was no different with The Airmen. Matter of fact, from the very first page you’re dropped into this ocean world full of sea monsters and pirates who get about on floating air ships; straight away you get a sense of this massive open space dotted by coral reefs. It’s exotic and occasionally tranquil. And I really like how that was balanced out by the grimy, gritt...more
Action-packed, inventive, rip-roaring, bloodthirsty and brilliantly described.
The Airmen is the first in the series The Pirates of Aireon by R J Ashby. You are thrown headlong into a world of water, air, salvage, pirates and living off what you can find. And a lot of violence. Jardan and his father are salvage operators in their flying machine, a dirigible or airship. The cities in this world are made up of airships snagged together with wires and ropes, making a regular cats-cradle of a metropo...more

I won this book from a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.
First off, let me start off by saying that I enjoyed this book very much. Multiple times I found myself sitting in class thinking about how I couldn't wait to get home so I could continue reading. I was totally immersed in this world within the first twenty pages. I was expecting this novel to be a children's book so when I started reading it I was very surprised. Although I did enjoy it, it seems to be more directed towards men with all the...more

There are other pirates to battle, a bounty hunter, a madwoman, and more. This is a page-turner and will keep you awake with excitement!
