I was never one to believe in love at first sight - attraction, yes, but love? Not a chance! That was until I read Norma Budden's Written on the Stars and now the author has me wondering whether I've been wrong all along. That was until I read Norma Budden's Written on the Stars and now the author has me wondering whether I've been wrong all along. Could it be that love at first sight is not merely a concept but reality for some couples?

Written on the Stars is not as long as a book but is far longer than I would deem a short story. I've heard the words "novelette" and "novella" thrown around; perhaps it would be best classified as one of these. Regardless, I admit to being intrigued from the start when reading this title and discovered it to have all the elements I look for when reading a fiction story in spite of it being about a snapshot in time.

It begins with Sarah Chambers walking into a nightclub in search of an online acquaintance she wanted to get to know better. Instead, she runs into Mike Rivers, the man she met and had fallen in love with years earlier. Chased by memories of their time together, we're offered glimpses of Sarah in the present but largely see flashbacks of how the two met and the ensuing events.

Written on the Stars held my interest and had characters who remained true to their convictions, in spite of the temptation they faced when their attraction to each other became evident. I would have sworn on a few occasions that the two would give in to their passion but they surprised me and endeared themselves to me even further. I was actually proud of them.

I was provided with a lot of inspirational food to think about in Written on the Stars without making me feel the author was preaching to/at me which is a major bonus in inspirational fiction.

I was so heavily drawn into these characters lives that, at one point toward the end of the book, I was filled with emotion as I visited a hospital with Cancer-stricken children. A gripping scene ripped my soul to pieces and I would have shed tears even in a crowded room. Of all the scenes I've read in fiction, this was one of the most powerful and poignant. The author did an admirable job to provoke such a reaction.

The climax was satisfactory and the ensuing reaction, exemplary. All in all, it was a fantastic read and I'm sure I'll follow Budden's work as long as she continues to write. Personally, I hope she never finds reason to stop writing.
