Meralda is a royally employed mage who specializes in the impossible and is aided by her assistant Mug, an "enchanted dandyleaf plant who sees the world through 29 bright eyes." Best. Sidekick. Ever. And Meralda herself is a strong, likable lead. She's brave and smart, yet believable.

Saving the Sammi is a short story featuring the same world and characters as the novel All the Paths of Shadow, but prior knowledge isn't needed (I haven't read the novel yet myself). It's an enjoyable adventure in

Charming! This short story introduces the leading characters of Tuttle’s novel All the Paths of Shadow. I read the novel first and loved it. I loved this story too. It is too short for an in-depth character study or world building but it introduces its heroes splendidly: the plucky young mage Meralda and her sidekick, talking plant Mug.
They fly into the heart of a terrible storm to save a family. They soar on the wings of Meralda’s magic. Mug even learns to pilot his flowerpot.

Fun. I think it helps to have read the full length novel in the universe first, All the Paths of Shadow, otherwise this might seem too slight.

This was a really fun addition to the series. I'm not sure it would serve well as a stand-alone, as it assumes a fair amount of knowledge about the world it's set in (but perhaps I add it in because I know about it already). Anyway, nice side story while we wait for book 3.

Delightful short story featuring the characters from Paths of Shadow. Loved Mug's new mode of transportation at the end.

I did miss the bodyguards though.

Meralda short story. It's an unfair complaint to call it "flimsy" at under 40 pages, but focusing on a world-changing invention that she builds in one day rubbed me the wrong way.

Very enjoyable romp

I love Meralda and Mug. This is a super adventure. The madcap invention of improbable magic, on the fly (pun intended) is a delight. Well done Mr Tuttle.
