From bestselling author Kim Harrison comes this original short story (to be featured in her anthology Into the Woods, October 2012) where things are most definitely not as they seem. A pet shop employee’s innocent date with a customer quickly turns disturbing rather than delightful. She and her family hold a centuries-old secret, and they want him to stay with them forever...more

OK I confess, I haven't actually read the Pet Shop Boys short story yet (although I certainly will!). I did, however, read the excerpt from Harrison's upcoming Hollows novel, "Ever After". Words cannot express how much I am looking forward to that book, and I'm thrilled to death the release date has been bumped from February to January 2013 :)

About the EA excerpt - so nice to see Quen again! I hope he gets more page time than he has in the last 2 books. He deserves it. I'm also hoping this is t...more

PET SHOP BOYS (The Hollows) by Kim Harrison

PET SHOP BOYS is a short story that will appear in the upcoming October release anthology Into The Woods. As the introductory short story to Kim Harrison’s new Hollows series, Pet Shop Boys will take you on a dangerous ride into a world of the supernatural

Cooper was a 25 year old pet shop employee who was unsure why he continued to stay on. He had been offered a job as an assistant to a professor but for some reason he just couldn’t seem to let go of th...more

A short story that is a possible prequel for a new series.

My Take
No, this is not Rachel Morgan or the Hollows although Harrison does bring her homey style to it. It's a bit vague at the end just what these creatures are, but it's clear enough that you want nothing to do with them...eek!

On the surface, this is an interesting story, but so much is left vague. We have no idea who or what Kay is and I still feel confused as to what Felicity and the others are. I suspect this is done purposefully to...more

'Pet Shop Boys' is a short story about a young single guy named Cooper who works in a pet shop for an attractive female boss who seems to take advantage of him a bit. When a strange but gorgeous single mother makes him a seemingly innocent offer, he soon finds himself in deep water.

Harrison's exceptional world building skills are on top form, the atmosphere is spot on and the characters feel real enough. I like the very different supernatural element. This isn't The Hollows and that's okay becau...more

As a guy, my love of the Kim Harrison books is something that draws the jibe and jest from "the fellas" when they see the row of books on my shelf. The fact that some are signed just makes it worse. I don't care. I jumped on the KH bandwagon shortly after Dead Witch Walking hit the shelves. I had all but given up on Laurell K. Hamilton and when I found Rachel Morgan, that was all she wrote.

Today, I scooped up this offering with no idea that I would have my jaw hit the floor. This goes in an ent...more

I admit that every time I see this title I just want to sing "West End Girls". Though I promise that the story is completely unrelated. It's actually about vampires, but they are completely different from our Hollows vamps. I actually enjoyed the story quite a bit and wouldn't have minded seeing a full novel based on this world. It's great to see that Harrison can branch out to other urban fantasy ideas aside from the Hollows. It definitely has potential. I read this as a part of the Into the Wo...more

Here I am again stuck in this love/hate relatiohship with Kim Harrison again. I love some of her ideas but she's so far away from being an accomplished writer that it destroy the enjoyment I would otherwise get from reading her stuff. I had found the last novel I read in the hollows series quite good and frankly as I read tome after tome in that series, I found there was noticeable improvement in her writing. So I definitely expected more and was disapointed. We're back to square one with this o...more

I wish this story was longer. I want to get to know Kay and Cooper. I would have liked more. The problem with reading short stories is that I almost always am left with wanting more. This is one of those times. To make matters even more wild for me is that there is a preview of the next Hollows book. On one hand I was tickled pink on the other hand I wanted the rest of the book right then!

I look forward to book of short stories that Ms Harrison has coming out. It should be fun!! This would have...more

I really enjoyed the story and hope that it is a teaser for something more down the line than just a short story. It left so many possibilities and questions that I think it would be great fun to see who end up being the real hero and bad guy at this point it could go either way.

This is the first of Kim books I have not enjoyed. It started off grabbing my attention. But I guess the way she went with the story turned me off to it. I loved the little bit in the end where he could see his secret love for who she really was. Horns, tail and all.

I am a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of Kim Harrison's series "The Hollows". I grabbed this short to kind of tide me over until the next Hollows release. I have to say that if this is one of the ideas that might be the next series, I would be very pleased.

Bah. I was kind of hoping there wouldn't be vampires and there wouldn't be a person trained in supernatural defense.

In other words, I was hoping it wouldn't be a traditional urban fantasy, and be more of a horror novel. Sigh. I should have known better.

Really did not like this story. It felt disjointed and just odd. Maybe in a novella form it would of been better but as a short story. Eh. I'm sad to review it like this because Harrison is one of my favorite authors.

This short tale was interesting but did not wow me. I know that if Ms. Harrison followed through with the series she would rock it out and thrill us all. I did not read the first chapter of the next book.

If the author ever does make a full length series out of this story line I would love to read it! Dark, eerily fun and just long enough to get one hooked and wanting more.

3.5 stars - a Kim harrison freebie from her upcoming anthology, Into the Woods, it was interesting in that it had a different take on vamps mixed in with some fae lore.
Minh
An intriguing start to what could have been a fun series! As always, kick ass female characters and villains on the slightly too dastardly side = great fun.
Chris
This was a very good teaser for a new series because I have more questions then understanding about the characters...vamps, fairies, slayer????
Lindsay
Way excited for In the woods to come out... and Ever After first bit just makes me wish that it was January already. Cannot wait...Great stuff.
Georgina
Characters in a different world than the Hollows. I hope that she can expand on these shorts. Plus a glimpse into the next Hollows novel.
Melody
I liked it. it was a short entertaining story. it was slightly confusing and made me very curious to what the heck they were but I think that was the purpose of it. :-)
Gilbert Wilcox
Cute little short story I hope she expands on, very cute, could almost be a child's book, kinda like that Colbert pole book

A pet shop boy gets a first hand encounter with what his grandmother warned him for. Not the night out that he wanted.
ladymurmur
Fun short story. Hopefully this is just an intro into a new universe/series - that would be VERY enjoyable.
Deea (Andreea)
And that's the end?! Just like that? Nooooo! Ms Harrison has to write this book ASAP!

P.S. Kim Harrison and vampires (and whatever this Fae-like world was) = WIN.
