Into the Darkest Corner
Catherine Bailey has been enjoying the single life long enough to know a catch when she sees one. Gorgeous, charismatic and spontaneous, Lee seems almost too perfect to be true. And her friends clearly agree, as each in turn falls under his spell.
But what begins as flattering attentiveness and passionate sex turns into raging jealousy, and Catherine soon learns there is a...more

Cathy’s relationship with Lee seems good to begin with, but as his true self starts to emerge, the more she is pushed into the darkest corner. This is a story of a very abusive relationship and the chilling effects it has on Catherine. Lee is controlling, abusive and thinks he is smart enough to get away with it; but can he?
Written in two parts, Into the Darkest Corner slowly unfolds the destructive relationship between Cathy and Lee. It also includes the story four years after, showing the dama...more

SERIOUSLY WHAT THE HELL!! I dont know whether to laugh, cry or scream at you Lee....
That, is what i call an emotional rollercoaster. I have been sat on my couch since finishing this book about 30 minutes ago running everything through my head, processing what has just happened to me.
Infact, what HAS just happened to me. If anything, im slightly more paranoid after reading this. Dont get me wrong, im not claiming to have a stalker, or imply i know anyone THIS messed up, but holy hec...more

This book was intense, and insanely brutal!
It gave me the same feeling as We Need to Talk About Kevin, while reading I felt physically sick, but had to keep going, and really, Im glad I did, this is an amazing book.
Cathy is a young single girl in her 20s when she meets, what she thinks, is the catch of the century, Lee.
Lee soon charms all her friends and has every one believing she has made the catch of the century.

Into the Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes is one of the most spine chilling and riveting novels ive read in a long time. The story centres on Catherine set in the past and the present 4 years apart. In the past Catherine is a fun loving party person who lives in the moment. After going out to one pub she meets a handsome doorman called Lee who she falls for. Intitially there relationship is very sexual and very casual but over time that changes. Catherine soon feels loved and valued by Lee but...more

INTO THE DARKEST CORNER reminded me of a slow burn, of holding my marshmallow an inch or two above the campfire, the flames licking and dancing but never quite touching that puffy goodness. But minus the gooey center and the warm, fuzzy feeling that a sugar rush gives you. Instead, this novel has a bitter aftertaste that leaves you wanting to down shots of Jose Cuervo to take away the burn. To be honest, it kind of creeped me out, like a whisper just behind my left ear with nary a hint of a mout...more

Wow, just wow. I stayed up late last night reading this book, had a nightmare (as I thought I would, I think I even heard my self screaming or crying, right before I woke up. I'm not sure) and resumed reading it before I ate my breakfast.
I felt like I was developing OCD while I was reading it. I kid you not, I checked twice if my door was locked and made sure my bathroom window was closed, before I went to sleep last night.

I started this audiobook at 6am and finished it in one listen at 2am the next morning. The laundry sat, the housework waited...you get the idea. I was riveted from the first few sentences, and it never let me go. I found the back-and-forth from 2001-03 to 2007-09 a great technique to draw me more and more into Cathy's overwhelming fear as Lee becomes increasingly more manipulative and psychotic. He is one dark character that is almost scary from the first meeting. The author sensitively shows us...more
I may not have read this book at the right time.
After a couple of Gillian Flynn novels, I seem to have over-saturated on the old suspense formula.
Even so, I'm not sure I would have been overly impressed anyway. This was exactly the type of novel where you know there must be one or two *GASP* moments just around the corner.
Ehh, not so much. I found the story to be kind of predictable, and I doubt I'll remember a whole lot from it as time goes by.

Catherine Bailey still hasn't met Mr. Right, but she believed her luck might finally have turned when she met Lee Brightman. Four years later, she still hasn't recovered from the horrors she experienced at Lee's hands. Lee is serving a three year sentence after leaving her for dead and Catherine, now Cathy, is trying to make progress with each new day. Even days, odd days, cloudy days, each requires something different. Some days she can barely leave her apartment. Others, she's ok as long as sh...more

A big 4 1/2 stars for this Target book of the month book club pick! This psychological thriller is about a woman with severe OCD and PTSD who went through an abusive situation years earlier. Told in alternate entries from 2003 (the past), and 2007 (the "present"), the reader knows something bad is going to happen. The author does a fantastic job of graaaadually revealing the psycho nature of the bad guy. Don't let the same old "Sleeping with the Enemy" storyline dissuade you, this is an extra ch...more

This is not a novel for everyone.
Was this novel suspenseful, difficult to put down, and overflowing with intrigue? Yes. Definitely.
Was it entirely too realistic regarding stalking, abuse, rape, abject terror causing crippling OCD? Yes, in my limited experience, i would say so.
A little social commentary: I held off on writing a review for a few weeks after reading ‘Into the Darkest Corner’. The violence was raw and I didn’t want to revisit it so soon. While the review was on hold however, I forgo...more

I quite liked Human Remains though I thought it had problems, so I went back to try Haynes first book. This got her quite a lot of attention and prizes, a story of obsession in more ways than one. Lee’s obsession with Catherine weaves chillingly through the book, told chronologically going forward, in parallel with Catherine’s story four years later. The later story is also about obsession- her OCD and PTSD symptoms that have resulted from the trauma we work our way up to, which happened at the...more
In 2003, Catherine Bailey is young, fun and thrilled to meet handsome Lee Brightman. She and her friends agree, she is so lucky to have found such a great guy. In 2007, Cathy Bailey has a severe case of obsessive compulsive disorder, checking locks, door frames and taking different routes home everyday. Told in alternating timelines, we follow Catherine's relationship with Lee as it slowly morphs from fairytale to nightmare, and Cathy's story as she struggles to overcome her fears and anxieties...more

To be honest, it took me a while to get into this book. The story unfolds along two tracks simultaneously - the events that lead up to the main character's life altering trauma and her life as she tries to overcome that trauma. Once I got comfortable with the timelines, the story read smoothly. In fact, I actually found the back and forth to be an effective technique to generate tension as the story builds up to what has to inevitably happen.

Elizabeth Haynes...Wow. Oh ye have a little faith! If you haven't read this book yet, but happen to own it, or happen to come upon it for the very first time-go open it. Right now. Select a page from this book, any page that you prefer and just read it. From top to bottom.

I picked this book up at Target looking for a commute read. I was pleasantly surprised with the depth of the whole thing. Starting the book can be frustrating as you are forced to experience the story through the eyes of someone with severe panic and OCD and if you AREN'T someone with severe panic and OCD, you'll find yourself wanting to grab her by the arms and shake her. But as the story goes on and her life unravels (it's told alternately in the present and the past, revealing why she is the...more
I just finished reading this book. I now have a desire for a stiff drink and a want to find a photo of my ex so I can burn it. I am amazed at how the author so clearly captured the feeling of being in an abusive relationship, the hurt and the doubt and wondering if maybe it really isn't him and it really is you that's wrong. The phone call from friends asking what the hell is wrong with you and not believing you. *sob* It hits so close to home.

But what begins as flattering attentiveness and passionate sex turns into raging jealousy, and Catherine soon learns there is a darker side to Lee. His increasingly erratic, controlling behaviour becomes frightening, but no one believes her when she shares her fears. Increasingly isolated and driven into the darkest corner of her world, a desperate Catherine plans a meticulous escape.

The blurb drew me in. The first chunk of the book nearly pushed me out again. For me, it took too long to build up to the real action. I understand that the reader has to understand the trauma that Cathy had gone through and was indeed, still living, but just like the OCD - it was repetitive and at times tedious.
The story picked up when Cathy gets the phone call... and whilst it's obvious what's going to happen, this section is at least is full of tension and suspense. (though it's not a thrill...more

Into the Darkest Corner tells the story of Catherine, a woman who suffered domestic abuse and as a result suffers from OCD and PTSD. Interestingly the author chose to write it as two stories side-by-side, one detailing the events that led up to the abuse and the other several years later after. The juxtaposition of how Catherine was before and after is incredibly powerful.
I found the story incredibly enlightening in terms of understanding domestic abuse, OCD and PTSD. Particularly, the idea that...more

I gave this one five stars, but do keep in mind it's not a five star for every reader. I loved the writing, which surprises me as I don't generally follow one very well that goes from one period of time to another. In this case, it's so well done that I was literally in the grip of the story from start to finish. The difficulty in this book lies in that it is from the point of view of a woman who experienced horrible and frightening abuse. Each chapter begins with a date stating the month and ye...more
Need a good book to read this weekend? This one is only $1.99 on Kindle right now and it’s pretty terrifying. (I mean that in the best way best possible.)
If you were a fan of Gone Girl or Room, you’ll recognize that same feeling of dread and terror and the suspense of not being able to stop reading (just one more chapter!). It was not until I finished half of the book that I felt the suspense offered by the rave reviews had just begun, exactly when Catherine received a notification call from police telling her that her ex-boyfriend, her abuser, would be released from prison in a couple of days. As for the first half of the book, the flow between two time settings was quite plain in my opinion. The only mild change of tone was when Cathy found someone had broken and entered into her house. Nevertheless, I was carrie...more
