As you might or might not know, Othello is not just my favorite play, but probably also my favorite piece of literature ever. I wrote my thesis on it and I have very clear views on it. For instance, I resent the racist interpretation that claims, Othello just succumbed to jealousy. It is much more complex than that, as are the characters.
That being said, the 'Leerstelle' / vacancy that is Desdemona has always bothered me and I even attempted to put her story into words. Needless to say, I failed...more

In this short play, Toni Morrison yanks the famously victimized Desdemona out of Othello and gives her a voice. Using intersectional feminism, Morrison examines how Desdemona, Barbary, and Emilia are trapped by their lives; the obligations they have to each other; and the options they could have exercised in life to avoid tragedy.

A slim, but profound, play by the reigning master of literature. If Toni Morrison were a preacher, I'd go to her church for worship.
Interesting. Not great, but interesting.
In my opinion, the book was far too short. It felt very rushed - there were some theoretically very profound subjects to explore in this book, but it seemed that they were not thoroughly explored and developed.
Honestly, considering the high quality of Morrison's other works, I was disappointed.
