And now the Cusslers bring us Pitt’s most dangerous adventure of all.

The elements of the Cussler style for the Dirk Pitt adventures are all here - the damsel in distress, events on opposite sides of th globe being linked, a huge build up to a quick finale, and a bit player named Clive Cussler. Add to this Dirk Pitt Jr (and his sister Summer) who follows in the grand tradition of Scrappy Doo, Muppet Babies, and every other story teller who has run dry of original ideas for his main character so adds the main characters son to continue the adventures and one gets a...more

#22 in the Dirk Pitt series (#5 with co-author Dirk Cussler). 40 years after Dirk Pitt's debut (The Mediterranean Caper - 1973) has become the Director of NUMA and his adult children (Dirk, Jr. and Summer) are field employees; former Director, Admiral Sandecker is now U.S. Vice President; and, Dirk's wandering eye has settled down and he has married Loren Smith, Congresswoman from Colorado. But there are still larger than life threats to counter and Pitt stands ready to go on the attack. Very re...more

I am reviewing the novel Poseidon's Arrow by Clive Cussler et al which is a very good adventure thriller which I bought from kindle. This is the 22nd installment in the Dirk Pitt series. The plot starts with a fictional historic event in the form of an italian submarine during the second world war that is transporting supplies and has the propeller damaged by a depth charge dropped from a british airplane. This displays the sub as the propeller is in danger of piercing the hull and the crew aban...more

I have read all the Dirk Pitt novels and have really enjoyed them, until this one.

Most of the novels catch your interested from the 2nd or 3rd page. Most have very well written and researched plots that are believable. The fun part was always the historical secondary plot that made the stories unique. This one the secondary plot isn't even mentioned until 3/4 of the ways thru the book. Usually once I start the book I have a hard time putting the book down. Not so this time, I let the book set se...more

I use to like Clive's books but lately they have become really hard to like. Dirk Pitt is his original character but this book had so many plot holes and stupid oversights that I just could not get into it.

Dirk is sent to investigate the disappearance of a secret drive system. They of course find the shipwreck but over look the mysterious ship that just "happens" to be hanging around.

The bad guys steal the system from Dirk and crew. After a chase of course Dirk recovers the girl and manages to d...more

Twenty-second in the Dirk Pitt action suspense series revolving around the director of NUMA, his sidekick, and his kids.

My Take
It's a case of national pride, military superiority, traitors in high places, and the selling and buying of rare earth elements desperately needed in our technology-rich lives. And, oh man, the action is hot, fast, and furious as we run all over the globe in this one with chase scenes galore from ATVs to merchant carriers to vintage Packards. Definitely Saturday afternoo...more

Great adventure. Holds your interest throughout. Love this series. Dirk Pitt is the best!

It is the greatest advance in American defense technology in decades—an attack submarine capable of incredible underwater speeds. Nothing else in any other nation’s naval arsenal even comes close. There is only one problem: A key element of the prototype is missing—and the man who developed it is dead.

At the same time, ships have started vanishing mid-ocean, usually never to be found again, but when they are...more

Here is the issue - when you have a long-running series, which stars the same main character, you face the inevitable problem that they are eventually going to get old. Cussler has tried to deal with this problem in the same way that Tom Clancy has, by introducing the son of the main hero. (Jack Ryan Jr and Dirk Pitt Jr respectively)

Cussler has some interesting ideas, and he starts out with quite the high concept ideal in writing this book. There's this brand spanking funkalicious new technology...more

This was to be the greatest advance in American defense
technology in decades. An attack submarine capable of
incredible underwater speeds. No nation anywhere had anything
close to it. Only one thing is wrong, a key element is
missing and the man who developed it is dead. At around this
same time ships have started vanishing usually nebver to be
found again. When they are found bodies are found on board
burned to a crisp. And what does all of this have to do with
an Italian submarine that disappeare...more

If you're looking for a fast-paced, high seas adventure you can easily finish in a day or two, don't hesitate to try this one. It's the latest in the author's series featuring Dirk Pitt - a series that started way back in 1965. Today, Pitt heads up the National Underwater and Marine Agency, and he's grown old enough that he's been joined at the agency by his grown-up twins, Dirk Jr. and Summer.

If it's snappy, intelligent dialogue and scenarios that don't sound contrived that you want, however, y...more

It’s 1942 and an Italian submarine is attacked by British aircraft near the Cape of Good Hope. The submarine is horribly damaged and the mysterious scientist and his precious cargo seems to be lost. However, seventy five years later, while diving off the coast of Chile, NUMA Director Dirk Pitt saves a crowded cruise ship from being sunk by an oncoming runaway freighter. On board the rogue ship though, he finds the oddly charred remains of a single crewman. Far away from there, on a whole other c...more

A new military technology has just been developed with the recent completion of a fantastic prototype submarine. The “almost invisible” stealth and phenomenal speed of this submarine will keep the United States in the forefront for many years to come. The technology is all due to the efforts of two men and has been kept so secret and these two are the only ones who know how to the details of it. As the story begins to develop, these two individuals are murdered, and the submarine prototype, alon...more

Another must if you are a Cussler serial reader. Sometimes I wonder if that is the right thing to be. This book was ok. I am not going to give a recap of the story as there are plenty out there or you can look at the jacket cover.
I will give you a few thoughts……At first, as you look at the map in the front and back covers, it looks wrong having the Atlantic on the west and Pacific on the east. That bugged me for a while until I went to Google Maps and found out that it is accurate.
Dirk Pitt is...more

Clive Cussler is always on-formula and always wins happily for the Good Guys. But his books also reflect an environment of reality, at least in matters of government, national security, and the Washington DC environment. Not so with Poseidon's Arrow. (Spoiler Alert) Here you have the director of a major US Government agency out in the field, running around, and shooting up the Bad Guys. Think: the director of NASA personally heading off to explore Mars. Not to mention a top-notch Naval Security...more

The US has developed a fast attack submarine, but the new engine goes missing and it's creator is found dead. Around the same time, ships carrying rare earth elements are disappearing, and when they do turn up, the bodies found aboard are burned and charred. NUMA director Dirk Pitt, his twin children Dirk and Summer and their familiar entourage join up with NCIS agent Ann Bennett to regain the prototype engine and find out why the ships are vanishing.

A good adventure novel, with my favourite Cus...more

Yeah! As I've said before, you always know what you are going to get with Clive Cussler. After just finishing reading The Book Thief which tore me up and spit me out emotionally, reading about Dirk Pitt was just what I needed. Total escapism! Lots of action and the good guys win. You get lots of good guys in this one with Dirk, Dirk Jr., and Summer. What could be better. And even though Dirk must be about as old as me he's still got it! I told my husband that you always know what to expect, just...more

I guess it was O.k. if you are a die hard Dirk Pitt fan. This story is really not up to speed on routine self defense techniques. I was optimistic until the second attack to steal the goods. In the aftermath of the first attack, I expected someone to spruce up the defense with heightened security measures, but no one did. They stumble from one trouble spot to another with totally inadequate security forces or oversight. I was disappointed in the lack of effort to use some sort of clandestine or...more

I love Dirk Pitt, and I am forever thankful to Clive Cussler for bringing him to life. <3

All Cussler books follow the same general plot line but I'm ok with that. I like to read about the awesome hero struggling against the ultimate bad guy. I like the explosives and fights and pretty girls and nautical mysteries. I like the wit and slight cheesiness and the happy endings.

(Of course, all that being said I don't think I'll ever branch out from Cussler. I'm happy with his writing and his series...more

Help me out here. I thought that as of the last one of these books Dirk was an old guy, behind a desk, somewhat sedentary and letting his kids do all the heavy lifiting. I must have missed it when Dirk Pitt returned back to his action hero self. Good thing he did, because it keeps everything going for Clive Cussler in this part of the NUMA series. As always, wonderful preposterous stuff. But it is, and always has been, pretty darn addictive. I always manage to get around to reading them, and I a...more

I like Cussler. There is always adventure, good guys win eventually. Things you can count on and I like that. This story was fun. I've enjoyed watching Dirk Pitt grow older, get married, and still stay friends with all the old gang. And he doesn't cheat on his wife! I live nowhere near the ocean but I've dived with Dirk Pitt all over the world. That's all about Dirk Pitt and not this particular story, but it's a good one. Bad guys stealing American secrets, good guys trying to stop them. Interna...more

American Navy researchers have made what could be the greatest breakthrough in ocean warfare in decades. A new type of submarine that is capable of speeds up to 3 or 4 times faster than current submarines can reach. Nothing else that any other country has around the world – China, Russia, Iran etc – will be able to come close to it. With this submarine in deployment, they would be able to defend any corner of the globe in ways that could not be counteracted.

There’s just one problem. What is supp...more

Book # 22 in the Dirk Pitt series

The plot detail is from Wikipedia, short and precise I couldn't have said it better, although I did take the time and liberty to complement it with my own thoughts.

“This book is about a secret prototype attack submarine the United States is developing and the efforts of a ruthless multimillionaire who wants to seize it by any means and sell it for a hefty profit. This millionaire antagonist also is bent on monopolizing most of the world’s rare earth mineral minin...more

While still poised on the brink of an extraordinary advancement in underwater propulsion, two scientists suddenly disappear. Meanwhile, huge ore carriers with cargos of rare Earth elements simply vanish off the face of the planet. Remnants of their gallant crew are seared to a crisp, their bodies burned to cinders.

The mysterious disappearances arouse the interest of Dirk Pitt and the staff of NUMA. As it turns out, investigating the disappearances is a harrowing race against death. Dirk and his...more

Another intriguing adventure by an author who has visited South Haven (while searching for wrecks in Lake Michigan). That Cussler actually participates in hunting for shipwrecks and collects antique cars gives him an insigth into what he writes about.

In addition to lots of action, ships attacking and underwater adventures, there is always some history to his stories. Here it is a WW II Italian submarine that is lost.

A good read. Many thanks to my daughter for getting this for me for Christmas.

The 23rd book in the series still holds the same excitement I felt when I read the first book.

Dirk Pitt is back and with his children with another one of his impossible adventures this time dealing with advanced technologies and rare earth minerals. Keeping in with the Cussler tradition of writing book related to the sea, this book is quite informative and filled with action up to the brim. With equal attention given to both Pitt and his children, Cussler and his son Dirk have created an amazin...more

This is the Cussler that I enjoy - modern adventurers accessing or defending speculative technology with old sea legends unravelling in the background. This one had a strong Australian connection and relied heavily on the current state of Rare Earth element trade, capturing fairly well the dynamics of their mining and market. The description of a ball mill in laymans terms was amusing! There is not any doubt about the outcome of course, rather the ride taken to get there. In this case the heroes...more

Luckily unlike many of Cussler’s recent books this focuses less on the children and more on Dirk Sr. Someone is attempting to steal and sabotage America’s top secret military products and rare earth metals. Dirk assisted by an NCIS agent who seems to get kidnapped on a regular basis manages to link the thefts to a piracy ring using a microwave weapon to kill or maim the crews and then steal the cargo. Dirk and Giordino attempt to stop the ring with a little bit of help from the kids before Nati...more

Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels are so much fun; they are history, mystery, intrique, a little romance, lots of action, good food, and undersea adventure.

This one centers around the navy developing a new sub called the Sea Arrow. When the plans for it and eventually the moter and actual sub are stolen, Dirk, his family, and Numa are on the run looking for it. I had never heard of "rare earth minerals" which play an important role in this novel. This was a just-for-fun read.:)

typical Cussler. With Dirk Pitt action adventurer (this guy has to be pushing 50) this time he is dealing with an evil guy who is cornering all the "rare elements" that are needed for modern technology and selling them to the Chinese along with american techology and he is also double crossing the Chinese which of course they don't like. lots of adventure on the sea (of course) and running and shooting and Dirk getting out of scrapes that mere mortals couldn't
Cole Oberndorfer
A typical Dirk Pitt novel, overwhelming machismo and the ability to escape any situation unscathed. Always a fun and entertaining read for any Cussler fan. The only downside to this novel was the inept attempt to cram every single recurring character in to the book. Much of the cramming was awkward, and served no purpose. In many cases, like real life, Cussler would be smart to let the relationships with those characters evolve, even if it means not including them in future Pitt adventures.

Cussler began writing novels in 1965 and published his first work featuring his continuous series hero, Dirk Pitt, in 1973. His first non-fiction, The Sea Hunters, was released in 1996. The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered The Sea Hunters in lieu of a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in May, 1997. It was the first time...more
