ARC Review of The Long Way Home by Cathryn Parry

I read Cathryn Parry's debut novel Something To Prove and I thought it was a solid first publication in the great big world of Harlequin. Harlies are all over the place. Some are utterly ridiculous (inexperienced virgin mistresses and the tycoons who love them), but high on the entertainment scale if that's what you're looking for. Some are short and sweet and formulaic. Some push the envelope. I'm not looking for believability when I read a Harleq

Good book with believable characters. Bruce left home after an accident that claimed his best friend's life. Many people blamed him for it and he had no desire to deal with them again. When he came back for his sister's wedding he also found himself in charge of taking care of his aging grandfather who also has Alzheimer's. He reconnected with Natalie, who is the only other person who knows what happened that night. Bruce has spent the last fifteen years avoiding relationships of any kind, tryin ...more

Natalie Kimball has a way with the law. She knows how to wrap it around her finger. She wonders whether her father can see fit to leave his business to her as he retires. She has had a crush since childhood on a man who she never feels she could have. He has always been popular with the ladies.

Bruce Cole has lost touch with his past. He does not want to look back. Being blamed for his best friend's death is something he has not resolved. He is not sure if he ever will. He never stays in one plac

Okay, full disclaimer: Cathryn is a very cherished friend, but I still love her books! They're so like her: genuine and empathetic and you come away feeling like, ahh, okay, I can continue to face the craziness that is my life. The Long Way Home is the same. It took me out of myself, I fell for Bruce and adored Natalie (she had me at 'hearing impaired'.) Certain things in this story struck very close to home for me and I love how Cathryn handled them with a deft touch. Well done.

A deeply touching story about flawed but lovable characters that I cheered for as they struggled to attain their happily ever after. Kept me up way too late and made me cry. But I'm not complaining.

Liked that the heroine was hearing-impaired, not something you read every day.

Cathryn Parry’s first piece of romantic writing was a love letter she wrote to the boy who sat next to her in first grade. By the next Christmas, she was asking for a typewriter to organize her growing collection of adventure stories inspired by Nancy Drew.

But it wasn’t until Cathryn was an engineer working a less-than-inspiring job in a ball bearings factory that she dared to write her first nove
