World-famous Professor Stephen Hawking again teams up with his daughter Lucy to tell the second installment of George's adventures in space. An aspiring scientist with eco-warrior parents somewhere in England, George was thrilled in the first book (GEORGE'S SECRET KEY TO THE UNIVERSE) when a real live rocket scientist moved in next door. Unfortunately for George, Eric has taken a position with the Global Space Agency and is moving his family across the Atlantic to Florida. But no sooner has Geor...more

George’s Cosmic Treasure Hunt is the second book by Lucy Hawking and her brilliant father, Professor Stephen Hawking. This wonderful work of science fiction invites the reader into a world of adventure, suspense and learning. George, the protagonist, is off for another adventure in the solar system with his friend Annie. They are off to save the world after discovering clues from aliens, or are they? To travel the universe they get help from their super smart computer, C...more

I didn't enjoy this one as much as George's Secret Key to the Universe, but it wasn't bad. Max enjoyed it and, like the last one, it got him asking questions about planets, galaxies and science in general.
My biggest complaint was that while there is some science interwoven throughout the story, which seems aimed at 7 to 11 year olds, the "real" science is isn't part of the main plot. It is separated into small sections that come in the middle of chapters and is written for a much more mature aud...more

This book was really fun to listen to and my rating is reflected as an adult reader (five stars for a child or teen). The story line is cute (nothing deep) but the lack of depth is made up for by scientic facts! Even though this was meant for someone younger, I found myself learning many things (all facinating facts). Want to brush up on your planetary knowledge? This book is a perfect, quick, fun read that I would recommend to ANY parent. Buy the audio book and play this in the car to the kids...more

This is one of the best books ever written about space. The facts put in along the way were the most interesting to me, as well as the brilliant photos. One of my favorite books of all time... It will definitely keep you reading till the very end and you will love the characters just as much as the funny plot :) Nicely illustrated and with a great idea- this book will leave you wanting more- but the good thing is that Lucy and Stephen Hawking made two, the first one titled "George's Secret Key T...more
This is not as good as the prequel (George’s Secret Key to the Universe): the story is a bit cheesy and might put off some of the clever kids that it is aiming to reach. Nevertheless, I think Stephen Hawking and his daughter did a wonderful job in presenting complicated science concepts (redshift, the Goldilocks zone, M-theory etc.) to children, therewith inspiring them to read on and look further into the subject. The illustrations are gorgeous; the background information is very readable and n...more
This science fiction selection is the second book written by Lucy Hawking and her well know physicist and Mathematics Professor father Stephen Hawking. In this book we read of the further adventures of George and his best friend Annie as well as Annie's dad Eric and the supercomputer Cosmos. In this volume Annie receives a message from somewhere out in space that the Earth is in danger and soon faces destruction. Annie, after encountering a lot of difficulty convincing her Dad of the serious nat...more
I wanted to like this, but it felt a bit too much like a 5th grade homework assignment. It has a cute story that keeps getting interrupted by science lessons. Lessons that are often disregarded to advance the plot. (e.g.: it takes 8-20 minutes to get a signal to Mars, but they do it in real time.) Don't think I'll bother with the rest of the series.
I did appreciate the nod to H2G2, though. ("I don't think there's a restaurant at the end of the Universe.")

I liked George's Secret Key to the Universe a lot more (I preferred the backdrop dynamic of anti-technology hippies vs scientists in that one) but this was still a good book. It centers around the idea of life on other planets so besides from hopping planets and moons (mostly outside of our solar system), the kids learn about the work of astronauts and robots.
Lots of interesting science information. The plot is a little contrived, but it seems to work. The science information interrupts and slows down the story, but that is the point of the book. Great color pictures of deep space objects. The age level of the science is quite a bit higher than the age level of the story. I finally understand the red shift theory.

I would highly recommend reading the first book before delving into this one in order to better understand the characters.
The story was greatly interrupted by all of the factual inserts, which were much longer (and denser) than in the first book. I didn't enjoy it as much as George's Secret Key to the Universe.

This was a truly enjoyable read. It is good to have a children's book that actually addresses many scientific facts in an accessible manner without resorting to dumbing-down the content.
With science scattered throughout the narrative, and short asides to explain key facts, it borrows much from the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.

My son Michael loved this book written by Lucy Hawking and her famous scientist father, Stephen Hawking. Although I found my mind wandering through some of the descriptions of red shift and black holes, Michael was mesmerized and would bring me back to the book with questions about the universe. I found "let's ask Dad" a good answer for most of them. This is a good book for science fans.
Hi guys I am reading George's Cosmic Treasure Hunt. It is very special because it's about space, and I love space. George is a normal kid like me. He is an astronaut. He was leaving his planet and his friends and family. This book reminds me of Star Wars!!!!!!! Beacause all the characters in Star Wars are in space. I think when George saw another spaceship I think the person in the space ship are going to be friends. This is the best story did you know that light travels 846.000 miles per secend...more
I like this series by Stephen Hawking and his daughter, Lucy. They're geeky enough for the scientist, and amusing enough for those of us who aren't quite there. And there's just enough humor for the adults.

“In his eyes shone the reflection of the most beautiful planet in the Universe---a planet that is not too hot and not too cold; that has liquid water on the surface and where the gravity is just right for human beings and the atmosphere is perfect for them to breathe; where there are mountains and deserts and oceans and islands and forests and trees and birds and plants and animals and insects and people---lots and lots of people. Where there is life. Some of it, possibly, intelligent.”
