A surprisingly fulfilling and action-packed novella.

I may seem a bit harsh saying this, but I find a lot of mid-series novellas to be unworthy of the e-ink they're displayed in. Most of the time, the stories within are so much padding and filler with no progression to the characters or the series as a whole. And I can understand why; you can't really have something major plot-wise happening in a novella that some people see as 'optional' reading. It will be far too confusing come the next book...more

A fun, and informative addition to the series. Too often when authors put out short stories with the ongoing series it seems like nothing more than a cheap ploy to milk more profits out of readers. The stories have little substance, and no bearing on the series as a whole. I was pleasantly surprised to find this was not the case with this story. It was nice getting a feeling for Betty's training (nice names Coyote) without having to devote chapters to it. It was also nice to see the tension buil...more

As 12 years pass between the events in Tricked (Bk 4) and Trapped (Bk 5), this novela is set right in the middle timewise and sets the stage for Ragnarök (the showdown between the Norse gods and some really bad people) and some very interesting alliances between Atticus and some gods. We also learn how Atticus and Granuaile are dealing with their 'working' relationship and some very revealing tidbits about Atticus' past.

I wouldn't say the book was boring but it didn't have excitement of previous...more

With Tricked already on shelves since April of this year and with Trapped not due to release until the end of November, I was feeling a little Atticus-sick. You know, it’s like home-sick but for a character. Two Ravens and One Crow was the perfect fix for me. A quick story featuring my favorite Iron Druid characters, it hit the spot.

Just a heads up, if you are not up to date with the series, you may be a bit confused (and spoiled) by this review ;)

So, you have this druid who has lived centuries thanks to an herbal concoction he learned how to make from a sorceress, and during his lifetime he's angered quite a few gods, mortals, etc. He tries to lay low in the desert with his trusty dog and a female apprentice who he finds incredibly attractive. He's got no time for that because he owes a favor to the Morrigan who's as scary as she can be beautiful. She convinces said druid to join her at a meeting with Odin and Frigg who would really like...more

"No, it's far too perilous!"

**Atticus bantering about his attraction to Granuaile with Oberon**

This novella bridges the gap between the previous adventure "Tricked" and the current one "Trapped". In the midst of training Granuaile, Atticus receives a visit from everyone's favorite goddess Morrigan- who has her own designs on our boy, both personal and professional. Seems there's some fallout from the events in Asgard that needs addressing, and the parties involve...more

Fangs for the Fantasy
Regular readers know that we are huge fans of Kevin Hearne and have a tendency to fanpoodle terribly, but oh my goodness it's Kevin Hearne, how could we not? Because this is a novella, it's going to be difficult to talk about without spoilers, so consider yourself warned.

Atticus still has a few years left in his training of Granuaile and this of course means much sexual tension. He has devised a plan with Oberon to "conceal the tower of his CARNAL DESIRE," by leaving to give his faithful hound...more

A novella in the Iron Druid series. This was better than a lot of his other short stories, but there were a few parts that I had to slog through. One was a booty call by Morrigan (goddess of battle) plus Atticus' longing & unrequited love for his apprentice...who seems quite intelligent until it comes to why Atticus seems uncomfortable when she's prancing around in tight clothing (this is a theme throughout the books). I'm guessing the author isn't married & is the stereotypical horny ge...more

Atticus is pretty much my absolute favorite #NakedDruid in the history of #NakedDruids. He's snarky. He gets unintentionally turned on by scary goddesses at really inconvenient moments. He has a thing for Granuaile that he refuses to acknowledge. He loves his dog. HE LOVES HIS DOG. 'Nuff said.

This was a cool little story that takes place halfway through Granuaile's training. While neither Oberon nor Granuaile have a large part, they both steal the show in their own ways when they're on page. Gra...more

ANALYSIS: As far as the sub-genre of urban fantasy is concerned, Kevin Hearne is counted as one of its upcoming stars and the Iron Druid Chronicles is named by many to be one of the best series out there currently. With four books released, the story has been progressing at a rapid rate and the world and mythologies introduced have made the read very riveting so far. However with the fourth book TRICKED, the story concluded the first arc of the series and...more

One of my favourite urban fantasy series is Kevin Hearne's the Iron Druid Chronicles. I've reviewed Hounded , Hexed , and Hammered on the blog and Tricked is on my TBR-pile. When I saw Two Ravens and One Crow on Netgalley I thought it might be fun to have a quick look-in on Atticus, Oberon and Granuaille. The book is set between Tricked and Trapped, but as I haven't read Tricked I don't know whether there are any spoilers in the story for it, there are spoilers for the first three books though,...more

Catching up with what Atticus & crew were up to was good especially since the next novel jumps 12 years from the last one. And for a short novella, the story was awesome. I could easily see the author making it longer if they so chose to. The story takes place 6 years after Tricked and we discover that Odin & Frigg know that Atticus faked his death. One would think that they want his head (and they do) but they want him fighting in Ragnarok even more. The Morrigan was in the book as well...more

Two Ravens and One Crow is a novella based in the Iron Druid Chronicles, and serves as a bridge between Tricked and Trapped, which effectively makes it book 4.5 in he series.

This book takes place 6 years after the events of Tricked. Atticus, Granuaile, and Oberon have been living in peace and have been able to really progress in Granuaile's training as a druid. Overall I think this is a smart move by Hearne, to leap ahead by quite a bit. It allows for the reader to know that Atticus was series w...more

This is a terrific novella and it's only $2.99! Woot! What an excellent addition to the Iron Druid Chronicles. Some of Atticus's decisions from prior books are coming back to haunt him and the decisions he makes in Two Ravens and One Crow will have ramifications in later on.

I missed Oberon, Atticus's meat-lovin' Irish wolfhound!!! Atticus and Oberon's back and forth always has me in stiches and while we get a little bit of that interaction, Atticus has to leave Oberon behind on this trip. Howev...more

A short novella in a series that has a feel of a combination between Dresden Files and American Gods with a main character who sometimes acts like a complete moron and has somehow miraculously survived over 2000 years and has suddenly decided to make some idiotic choices and unnecessarily make powerful enemies.

Despite all that, I do think the series is enjoyable enough. This short novella does feel more like a milking of the cash cow rather than a quality addition to the series. I suspect the ev...more

Nice to visit with Atticus (and Granuile/Oberon briefly). A quick look about halfway through Atticus' training of Granuile, the Morrigan comes to visit - never a good thing.

Some laugh out loud moments (as per normal in a Kevin Hearne book) and some interesting developments all around.

Can't wait for Trapped!

I seem to only really enjoy urban fantasy written by female authors, for whatever reason. I tried the first book of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and didn't like it at all. I read a short story set in Simon's R. Green's Nightside series, which I enjoyed, but not enough to check out the series. When I found this novella for my Nook I thought I'd give it a try to see if I liked the author before buying a whole book. In the beginning, I was not interested and almost didn't finish it. Reading reviews...more

Before discussing the novella, I think I should talk a bit about the series. I've been somewhat mixed on this series. I love the first novel, Hounded but I haven't rated a few of the other books quite as highly. This is one series that really should be read in audiobook form. The narrator does a fantastic job and the dialogue between the lead, Atticus and his dog Oberon is what really pulled me into the audiobook. That said, he's barely in this novella which fits neatly between books 4 and 5 in...more

This novella takes place between books 4 and 5 of the Iron Druid Chronicles. It was an excellent read and did a great job of capturing all the things I love about this series; lots of humor, interesting mythology, and interesting history.

Atticus is six years into training his apprentice Granuaile when the Morrigan comes for a visit. She wants Atticus to take a 2 week trip with her. Since this is the Morrigan, and you don’t say no to a goddess like that, Atticus agrees. What follows is some tatto...more

Fun novella set between Tricked and Trapped. Atticus and Granuaile are in the 6th of her 12 years of Druid training and Atticus is called away by the Morrigan for business with Odin.

I love these additions that Hearne gives us and this one in particular adds to our understanding of Atticus. We hear the story of how he came by the knowledge of Immortali-tea and we see him and Odin come to a fragile peace--for the time being anyway.

It always puts a huge smile on my face to hear Luke Daniels' narra...more

Call me old fashioned, but I don't really appreciate the idea of buying an "exciting new novella" and "wonderful addition to the series" that is essentially a prologue to the next book in the series. The best parts of this novella or mini-book or let's-just-sell-a-short-story-bcoz-the-novel-is-not-done-yet-and-our-fans-are-idiots-right or whatever these things are called these days, were the sneak preview of the next book in the series and SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER the part where two goddesses of...more

Just as much fun as always! Not everyone can manage writing a decent short story. I feel like most folks tend to have too much of a plot line and not enough time to fully develop it or wrap it up in a way that is actually satisfying. Hearne is pretty great at it though--he relies on background information given in his novels and doesn't spend much time rehashing things he's already covered elsewhere, and he manages to keep the same voice and sense of humor and pacing that he does in his full-len...more

Another terrific tale. Hearne is just a great storyteller, his writing is always perfectly smooth, with a great balance of adventure, humor and intelligence. He never fails to crack me up with the conversations that Atticus has with Oberon, I just love that dog. And the Morrigan is such an interesting character, it was fun to see a bit of a different side to her in this one as well. The story was a nice bridge between Tricked and Trapped, I really enjoyed it.

Anyone who has followed my reviews whether on my blog, Goodreads, Amazon or B&N or in person you know how much I adore this series.

Two Ravens and One Crow is a novella set six years after the events of Tricked and six years before the events of Trapped. I don’t know how much I can say about it without spoilers but I’ll give it a go. Still in Arizona Atticus is still training Granuaile while fighting a growing attraction to her. Oberon, pal that he is helps by distracting Atticus and letting...more

This short story was entertaining, and a nice 'aside' to the series.

Temporary medical issues have pushed me to audio books lately. The Iron Druid Chronicles is a stupendous series. I love each one and highly recommend. Kevin has a great sense of scope and the humor to keep it in bounds.

This hero is less heroic than most, but he live by a code and trying to stick to it does tend to create interesting problems. The characters are well drawn, and if you get a chance to listen on audio, Luke Daniel...more

Decent novella that takes place in between books, and the best part by far was Atticus finally retelling the story of how he learned the recipe for his life-extending tea. This gives a tiny bit of present-day plot, but it's all setup for the future of the series and there really wasn't much of it. Most of this felt like filler content, with Atticus spending an awful lot of time talking about erections (I mean, seriously, after thousands of years he still acts and sounds like a teenage boy in so...more

This is a fast and fun novella set between books 4 and 5 of the Iron Druid series. It's a good thing this novella exists, because 12 years go by between those two books in the series. We get to see a little bit of how the last druid and his apprentice spend those 12 years, and even get a little action between gods. There are a few familiar characters and the same wry voice that the author is so good at, so if you enjoy the series, you'll want to find this novella. I doubt much that happens in th...more

This novella takes place between Kevin Hearne's books Tricked and the forthcoming Trapped. The Iron Druid Chronicles are hilarious and fun reads--the banter and humor can most be likened to Joss Whedon--and this story is no exception. Atticus must deal with the Morrigan and a host of other disgruntled gods, and also has the chance to delve into his past and reveal how he became an immortal (but not invulnerable) druid. Hearne balances humor and depth; in particular, there's a conversation with t...more
