A Pleasure to Read -- A+
From the very first sentence to the very last, Sydney's Story was a pleasure to read. I won't give you a synopsis of the story, since other reviewers have already done that, but I will tell you the writing is tight, smooth, and brilliant throughout. Eileen Granfors, I got the sense almost every time I turned a page, wrote the book only she could write so well. Her writing is brilliant for many reasons, but the main reason for me is the efficiency with which she can paint...more

I need to say right up front that I have never read any Dickens, and do not regularly read anything about eighteenth century England. I therefore have no idea whether or not this story works as a prequel to Dickens' classic tale, nor do I know if the geographical, social, and historical components are accurate.
What I DO know is that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters stayed true to form and the story was well-told, keeping my interest until the end. I read it in one sitting, due main...more

I like books that take off from a character I already know. Like Scarlett from Gone With the Wind. I got Sydney's Story in a preview copy from a friend who knows the writer.
I remember Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities, which I read in school. What this author has done is go back through Tale to find some quotes about Sydney and build a portion of the book on that.
So the book doesn't have a lot to do with Tale of Two Cities except in Part IV where Lucie shows up and in Part II-III with CJ Str...more

SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!
I haven't read Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities which I don't think compromised my reading in any way but, if you have read it, you'll no doubt find lots of clever references to enjoy in Eileen Granfors' "Sydney's Story." Her novel is a prequel to Dickens's, imagining the early life of lawyer Sydney Carton. It takes us from Sydney's pre-school days to his life at boarding school and beyond.
Sydney's character is very well-established and even if the number of traumas in...more

Sydney’s Story by Eileen Granfors
Sydney’s Story describes itself as ‘a Prequel to A Tale of Two Cities’: an ambitious project to second guess the thoughts of Charles Dickens. It is not necessary to have read the latter to enjoy the former though I decided to refresh my memory a little.
Eileen Gransfors’ book begins with the death of Sydney Carton on the guillotine in Paris and then traces his life from boyhood through his ever-changing circumstances. From a very nice little boy he turns into a d...more

Charles Dickens captivated the world’s imagination with A Tale of Two Cities in 1859, selling over 200 million copies. One of his central characters, Sydney Carton, was a British barrister who struggled to redeem his ill-spent life. Talented author Eileen Granfors gives us an opportunity to understand the powerful experiences that molded Sydney’s character and launched him on his collision course with destiny. This prequel is a must read for literary fiction fans.
