Are you ready to open your imagination to the possibility that God has a vision for your life that is greater?

We all have honest moments when we’re gripped by a desire to feel that what we’re doing matters more. That who we are matters more.

And according to one of the most shocking verses in the Bible, Jesus wants the very same thing for every one of us:

Very truly I tell...more

I haven’t read Furtick’s other book but everything I heard was either unbridled praise or scorn. I don’t know if Greater deserves either of those extremes. I found some portions of the book helpful but most of it was self-help knitted into the story of Elisha--which is weird. He seems self-aware that his message is primarily one of self-empowerment while rejecting “self-help” as a title. For instance Furtick says,

In his most recent book, Greater, Steven Furtick draws from both modern illustrations and the biblical story of Elisha to encourage believers against wasting their lives on lesser things. By placing their faith in God, he argues, they will achieve things beyond “good enough,” beyond the “vague and unrealistic aspirations” of “greatness (9).” “When you live this way—the greater way…” he continues, “God’s greatness will not just be working around you—it will start working through you (14).”

This book is about how God wants us to pursue the Greater life and God-given dreams He has called us to. Through the story of the Old Testament prophet Elisha, Pastor Furtick explores how Elisha’s faith in God enabled him to not only fulfill the work that God wanted him to do but also created the man God wanted Elisha to be. Through the story of Elisha it is illustrated how God can do so much with us despite that we may not believe so. Pastor Furtick also speaks of the moments on the journey whe...more

I received this book, Greater, by Steven Furtick for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review. It will be on sale September 4, 2012.

Have you ever pondered Jesus words in John 14:12, where he says "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father" (NIV).

These words of Jesus are what came to Steven Furtick's mind as he thought about the death of Steve Jobs. Bringing h...more

“Are you ready to open your imagination to the possibility that God has a vision for your life that is Greater? . . .If you sense that you were meant for more but feel stuck where you are, Greater will give you the confidence to know that nothing is impossible with God, the clarity to see the next step He’s calling you to take, and the courage to do anything He tells you to do.”

Steven Furtick has written another inspiring, life-changing book. Greater is based on John 14:12 “Very truly I say unto...more

Greater – Steven Furtick
This has been a difficult book to read. Not having read his previous book, and not really knowing who Steven Furtick is (pastor of a church is all I initially knew) I decided to do some research into the author.
As with many of this type of book, it starts off slow and picks up from there. There are many points that are made which are valid and helpful as there are some that I found falling flat.
I guess my biggest issue with the book is that I find it hard to reconcile wit...more

In modern society, we all yearn to be faster, smarter, and greater than the person next to us. However, modern society is riled with flaws that lead humanity away from God. In Steven Furtick’s book, “Greater,” Furtick addresses relinquishing control of one’s life and turning over our will over to that of God’s will.

We can either choose to ignore God, turn away from Him, and wonder why our lives are miserable or, we can burn the plows within our lives and open ourselves up to God and His map for...more

Before I review the book I just wanted to say that I love seeing what God is doing at Elevation. Their worship carries a high anointing and under the leadership of Steven Furtick they are seeing many lives transformed by God. I thank God for what He is doing there.

I read his last book Sun Stand Still and to be honest I didn't really like it. It seemed very shallow and was missing some significant pieces. I was hoping that this book would be "greater". I believe it is significantly better than hi...more

Life offers so many distractions. In the age of multi-tasking, it's hard to find anyone willing to focus on anything exclusively for very long at all. When's the last time you had an uninterrupted conversation with someone? When's the last time you were able to give your full attention to any one thing. When's the last time you composed a letter or blog post without stopping to check your email? (Guilty, and it was just a couple pieces of SPAM.) And yet, in spite of all the "increased productivi...more

In Greater, Steven Furtick provided clarity on believing that Christians will do greater things for God’s kingdom through the power of Jesus. God wants us to be willing to assist the wounded and the hurting. Steven Furtick encouraged readers to not settle for mediocrity living but to achieve and go after the greater lifestyle. He articulated his point by describing how the Prophet Elijah was told by God to employ Elisha as the next prophet after him. Elisha was a common man plowing a field with...more

Greater
By: Steven Furtick

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading this book. I expected to be motivated to be more than I was before I read the book, but I didn’t know what that would entail. This book, Greater, has changed how I look at things.

In the beginning, Furtick states, “I want you simply to ask the Lord, in this moment, to begin to open your eyes—by faith—and help you perceive that He has greater things in store for your future.” Do you know what God wants you to be doing fo...more

This book in three words? Fresh. Entertaining. Inspiring.

Steven Furtick gives a fresh look at living a greater life for God. He bases his book on Jesus' words from John, chapter 14:

"I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father."

Even better, he backs it up with entertaining (and sometimes heartbreaking) stories. Have you ever heard of the prophet Elisha? Yeah, you'll be able to name s...more

I thought this book was absolutely great. I have read a lot of books in my life and honestly a lot of them has been close to this one, but what made this book slightly different was the focus of the book. I think a lot of other books that I have read have all had a focus at the person who is reading the book but this book had its focus differently. I loved the Whole story about Elijah and Elisha. It spoke into my life and it really ministered to me in GREAT and powerful ways. I love his writing...more

This book, for me, was about a 4 star rating.
I really liked what Furtick had to say. And it helps a lot that he's a pretty funny guy.

It makes a lot of sense, what Furtick had to say about God's plans for our lives. We are destined for greater things than we could ever imagine through Christ. But we aren't just going to wake up one day in height of our lives. We've got to start small, take it one step at a time, because that's how faith works -- putting one foot in front of the other with both...more

Greater is written by Pastor Steven Furtick.
God has called us to live the life that Jesus came to give us. It is a full life and a joyful life. Too many times Christians live in the just getting by or the mediocre status quo. We like to live not by faith but by sight. We think that we do better when we can see where we are going or when we are in control of our circumstances.

Control is an illusion.

Furtick uses the prophet Elisha as an example of what a life completely surrendered to God looks li...more

Love Elevation Church and Pastor Steven Furtick.

Great book as well.

Some take-aways:

* You can't expect God to entrust you with a big dream if He can't trust you to make a small start.

* "I've decided to be a greater dad. That means giving my kids all I have to give and making peace with what I'm not able to give." POWERFUL POINT FOR ME AS A DAD.

* If we're only into doing the things we perceive as adding to our greatness, it's a sure sign we haven't found the greater way.

* There's a fine line...more

Many of us want to achieve greatness, but according to Steven Furtick this is a vague and unrealistic goal of being better that doesn't really work. There are so many ways that the world and even the church define greatness that it's impossible to know what it will really take to become great. On the other hand, there are plenty of us who are just trying to get by. We live in the world of good enough and live a life of mediocrity. Furtick suggest that instead being good enough or shoot for the v...more

I must say this book was a great inspiration. What I found most appealing was that Pastor Steven did not consider living greater to be something you had to do one day in another place at another time; you could live that way here, today, in the place you are in. He challenged me to live my life in a greater way in the current time of life I find myself in.

The book is not grammatically complex. It was a very simple read, easy to breeze through. Do not judge the content of the book, however, by t...more

I have followed Steven Furtick and Elevation Church for several years. I think Furtick is one of the best church visionaries currently so I was excited to pick up his latest book. Greater is an easy and enjoyable read for those looking for something more with their faith. Furtick weaves jokes and personal stories throughout the book to relate to his readers. My favorite part was the study of the prophet of Elisha throughout the book. The Elisha sections had depth and weight compared to the rest...more

This book was given to me by a colleague. It started off a bit slow but in the end the book delivers. It is a strong message on how to live the best life possible. Ok, many will say I dislike reading books written by religious leaders who bump me over the head with their Bible. Well frankly the wisdom that comes from the Bible supersedes all other writings! The book is written in a more practical life way with stories and ideas developed from Pastor Steven Furtick’s own life experiences. Worth t...more

Really liked it. It read like a long organized blog to me.
I can relate to Stevens season of life (age, kids) and maybe that's why I liked it so much. Although its not of John Piper or Tim Keller Caliber, The book had impact on me. The points were conveyed with the skill of a pastor, easy to understand and relate to.
I like that it stayed with one person in the bible.
It's a super fast read, and has many statements that I noted for later. (Great twitter worthy statements that I could chew on for...more

It wasn't a *bad* book... but I felt like it was dumbed down. He's got some good things to say, but nothing that profound or thought-provoking. After reading CS Lewis, and even Rob Bell and Donald Miller, this felt like a children's book. And what is with all the bad jokes? There were so many, I felt like going through the book and circling them so I could tally them up. And finally, the book is very American-friendly. Would this book be applicable to a person living in an impoverished village i...more

This was written by my son's Pastor and I was eager to read it. Stayed pretty true to the words he preached and there was enough material that is made a good small group study for my son. Maybe we should be more encouraging of ourselves in this often negative world we live in. I enjoyed it being shared with me.

Great book! We as Christians are called to do greater things for God. Jesus himself said we would do great things. Love the story of the calling of Elisha. Pastor Steven brings out this story in a simple easy way to understand. Sometimes I think authors may go to deep and we get lost in the simple truth of the Gospel. This is an easy read and I recommend it.

It's not a "bad" book and it started out great; but once I hit the middle it went down hill for me. I loved some of the points made:
"it's not out there somewhere. It's in you right now"
"regardless of who you are and what you do, succumbing to mediocrity will sabotage your spiritual vitality."
Pam Howell
Furtick does a good job in casting God's vision for our life. His writing is clear & concise. His example of Elisha's pursuit of God is well done. I would recommend this book, especially if you are wondering who you are & what God is calling you to do with your life.

This book is a simple book to remind us that God will use us for greater things..... No matter who or where we are.....if we would just believe in Him and start simple and never give up if we fail.....which we will as we go from glory to glory. An enjoyable easy read.

GREATer was a little hard to get into. I struggled with it until chapter 5 and it was worth the struggle. Some pages I would read more then once so it would sink in. Listening to "The Dip" series on Elevation podcast helped open the book up in a new light.

I learn so much by watching Pastor Furtick of Elevation Church in Charlotte, NC every week on my ROKU, I consider it my second church, or my church away from home. "Greater" was like having Pastor Furtick in my living room. His writing style mirrors his speaking style and this easy to read book left a lasting impression on my heart. God is more than happy to fulfill our heart's passion. After all, He put it there. This book went beyond reminding me of this simple truth, and renewed my heart to s...more

I appreciate the challenge to draw close to God drawn out of teaching about the prophet Elisha - still struggling with some of the application (but thankful for Steven Furtick's acknowledgement that not everything turns out the way you hope/plan.)
