Loved this sequel to Be Still My Soul. The opening begins with a twist that took me completely by surprise. I felt every emotion with the characters. Ms. Bischof did an amazing job making the sequel every bit as good as the first book, a rare thing these days. I actually peeked at the back of the book because I couldn't bear to wait to find out how it ended...... And she doesn't disappoint. You'll love the turns and growth that Gideon and Lonnie go through in this book. I already eagerly await b ...more

Having put his sins behind him, Gideon O'Riley is eager to follow a new path with his wife Lonnie and their son Jacob, but finds that he's left one detail undone. Cassie Allan claims to have been legally married to still be married, in fact. But where does that leave Lonnie and the baby?

Reminiscent of the Jacob, Rachel and Leah story of the Bible, Gideon is caught between two women and the legal consequences seem to conflict with what is right morally and emotionally. Because the outcom

There's only one thing I could possibly say that I didn't like about this book: the fact that I have to wait for the next in the series!!

Just as she did in her first, author Joanne Bischof completely swept me away in this book. First of all, the storyworld is fabulous. I felt like I was in the Appalachians the whole time I was reading. Lonnie and Gideon are as sympathetic as ever--and it was fun to see them mature further in this book, even as they face what seems like a hopeless situation. Joan

Were you ever so much a part of someone’s story in life that you felt their every heartache deeply, rejoiced with their every victory greatly? Joanne Bischof takes us to this level of intimacy with her characters. In Be Still My Soul (book 1 of the series), my heart became entwined with the story of Lonnie and Gideon. When I picked up Though My Heart Is Torn, after months of anticipation for its release, I was immediately plunged right back into that deep connection with the characters. And oh, ...more

"Though My Heart is Torn," Book 2 in the Cadence of Grace series, does a wonderful job of carrying the series forward--no sagging in the middle here! The characters are written with such raw emotion and they are so real that if you told me they were based on true life, I would believe you. The prose is lyrical and beautiful and the central theme--that God's grace for us persists despite our failings and sins--remains consistent all the way through. If a reader starts the series with this book, t ...more

An Emotionally Rich Story of Hearts Torn Asunder

Grab some tissues, because you’ll need them. Sweet Lonnie and wayward Gideon O’Riley, an unlikely couple forced into a shotgun wedding in the first book of Joanne Bischof’s Cadence of Grace series, Be Still My Soul, endured hardships and heartache. Just when they’ve grown to love one another, his past threatens to tear them apart. Cassie Allan claims Gideon is married to her, requiring Lonnie and him to travel back to Rocky Knob, where they must fa

I said it about Joanne's first book (in which we first meet Lonnie and Gideon) and I'll say it about this one, too.

This was such a beautiful book.

The best part was receiving it in the mail and diving right into the first page. Right from the start, you can tell something big is about to go down. Something's going to happen that is going to shatter the shaky peace achieved at the end of book one

This is such a well written book! And it is amazing! The title is perfect for it because it totally tore my heart! And this book is just crazy! But in a good way. I really like how the author's note explains the book "to tell the story of a scoundrel, the sins of his past and the ways he and those around him were affected by it"-Joanne Bischof Page 467 in the large print edition. The second book in the Cadence of Grace series is a real page-turner. To say this is an emotional story is an understatement! The continuation of Lonnie and Gideon's story is very heart-wrenching, suspenseful, and so hard to put down. At the end of the first book, "Be Still My Soul", this young couple have finally seemed to find their way in love and settled down to really begin living their life with their new son. Wow. I haven't had a book affect me like this in a very long time. It's beautiful. It's heartbreaking. You will be drawn in and captivated by the characters and their struggles. Lonnie and Gideon have tough choices to make and a hard road ahead, but God will see them through. I don't want to give anything away, so I can't give more details, but this second book in the Cadence of Grace series will capture your heart and not let go. Looking forward to book 3! Enjoy.

What a spectacular sequel to Be Still My Soul!!

I'm still recovering from the heart-twisting experience I read through yesterday afternoon. Bischof does a wonderful job of bringing her characters to life and enthralling you with their story. There's no way to easily explain in this review how much I'm in love with this series but I'll certainly try!

Since I've already mentioned how realistic Lonnie and Gideon are let me next talk about the supporting cast. In Though My Heart is Torn the memorable

After staying up late into the night, praying for characters who have stolen my heart...All I can say is, read it.

We find our flawed hero ready to be a good husband and father, but he has yet to truly face the demons of his past. He is, rather, hitching a ride with Lonnie's God, with Jebediah's sturdy belief. By the end of this story, one hopes that he comes full circle and though he doesn't realize it, he is at last on the cusp of understanding God's redeeming love. Similarly

As a sequel, I went into this book expecting it to be a bit...less. Less engrossing than the first. Less character development. Less plot twists.

Boy, was I wrong.

Bischof's second book carries on just as strongly as the first, taking these beloved characters and making them even more our friends. When the unexpected happens, and Lonnie and Gid's marriage is once again tested, it holds you breathless at the edge of your seat!

I can only describe Joanne Bischof's writing as LYRICAL, just like her titles. She's a master of pacing, keeping us sitting on the edge of our seats the entire novel. She also has a deft hand with descriptions--they're never too heavy, but always enough to transport me completely to early Appalachia. I can feel and see the seasons and the chores...and the danger, toward the end of this novel. The characters in this novel are easy to sympathize with. These novels seem to grasp the trauma and hear ...more

Despite being comfortable in the reading habits I have developed over these many years, I’m a girl who can appreciate discovering new books and their authors, but am also a reader who likes to read books that have a high chance of being favorite reads. Anything less and in forcing myself to read a book, the joy of reading vanishes. This particular novel has several attributes and despite my skepticism, it’s fair to say, because of those glowing qualities, I’ve learned that sometimes a risk pays ...more

It usually isn’t a good idea to start with the second book in a series. But as I dove into, Though My Heart is Torn, I was completely unaware of the prequel. However, author Joanne Bischof, develops an excellent stand-alone story, while leaving me longing for the rest of the story.

Though My Heart is Torn, opens in a homey, romantic setting as the central couple work side by side in their apple orchard. Gideon and Lonnie O’Reilly are relative newly weds. Using vague, but indicative dialogue, Bisc

Our lives here on Earth are an ongoing work in progress, as we face many trials and tribulations which test our faith. With the first book in her "Cadence of Grace" series, "Be Still My Soul", author Joanne Bischof introduced us to Lonnie Sawyer and Gideon O'Riley, who live in the rural poverty of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia at the beginning of the twentieth century. This is the first book I’ve read by Joanne Bischof and I love, love, love it. Even though it is book two in The Cadence of Grace series it still can be read as a stand alone. Book one is called Be Still My Soul and I now really want to read it.
The characters are well described and very likable or not likable which ever is the cause. The scenery and places are very defined and easy to see yourself there.
Reading this book I really want Gideon to do one thing, but don’t know if that is possible.

Be Still My Soul was a beautiful love story with unique elements. Lonnie and Gideon were forced into a hasty marriage. Through the pages of the story their relationship struggled and grew as Gideon became the man God intended him to be and Lonnie believed he could be. The sweet unfolding of a realistic relationship made the story memorable.

In Though My Heart is Torn, Gideon’s past comes back to haunt them.
