A BDSM thriller

Detective Tom Hanson has a string of grotesquely mutilated bodies on his hands and no answers—aside from the fact that the victims were members of an underground sex club catering to singular erotic tastes. Thou art to me a delicious torment. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Red is a dark erotic thriller. It reminds me of the neo noir movie “Se7en” and the overtly sexual “Basic Instinct.” Clever red herrings and plot twists build anticipation. The characters and their problems feel realistic. This is a book that took me on a BDSM tour as it exists in the United States’ Bible Belt. This dark, defiant, sexual and graphically-violent suspense is to be enjoyed for fan...more

Detective Tom Hanson and his partner have a string of grisly murders to solve and not much in the way of leads. Until, that is, Detective Hanson is able to determine that the victims were players in the local BDSM scene. Needing some guidance and inside knowledge of the scene, he turns to his former partner and lover, Gina, now a professional dominatrix after being forced from her job as a cop once her extracurricular activities were discovered in a lurid sex scandal. They have a tense history,...more

Not a romance and I knew that going in so I enjoyed it for the thriller and mystery it was. Loved the erotic element, characters and twists and turns. Looking forward to another book by this author and hoping for a sequel!

I have to say, I went into this thinking it was going to have a stronger element of romance than it ended up having. I had expectations of an erotic BDSM romance with a thrilling murder mystery weaved throughout… But what I read was a thrilling murder mystery set in the BDSM community with hints of the erotic and brief moments of romance. A slight distinction, but important nonetheless.

Expectations set aside, I found myself engrossed by and engaged in this BDSM thri...more

Review:

"Red" by Kate Kinsey was a erotic thriller murder mystery read. Now, with that being said this is about BDSM, where you will find its raw, dark and edgy..that is to say be prepared for some graphic adult scenes with the violence and language. THIS IS A ADULT READ. OK, let me start by saying that is is about a serial killer that is targeting a BDSM community. I will say t...more

Well, the way I read this book says it all really - I was in the middle of three other books, was just going to read a couple of pages to see what it was like... And 4 hours later, I had spent my entire Saturday evening reading this page-turner!

It's important for me to mention here that I'm normally not a very big crime/thriller fan, in fact, I usually lose interest quickly and couldn't care less who-dunnit...

But Kinsey has managed something I find quite impressive - to write a page-turning thr...more

Copy received from e-Kensington through NetGalley.

It starts with the very brutal murder and mutilation of a local business man and is soon followed by the identical murder of a young woman. Detective Tom Hanson and his partner John Giggs have nothing to go on. No evidence, no clues and no links between the victims and no clear motive. Until they discover that both victims where members of the local BDSM scene. This, more adventurous form of sexual activity, is something Hanson has tasted from in...more

I guess the best way to describe this book erotic suspense. It is a who-dun-it in the BDSM world. While I did want to know what happened and who the killer was there is just something off about this book.

There are too many characters introduced too quickly for the reader to remember who is who which is distracting. The language in the book is crude and I am not talking about the sexual words but the use of vulgarities like fag, etc which just takes away f...more

I'll start by saying I fell in love with the cover art of this book.

Hanson is a detective who's investigating a series of deaths of people who are part of the "Lifestyle". Yup, part of a BDSM community. The deaths are grotesque in nature. Bodies are mutilated, and he has a bit of a hard time identifying the type of weapon used to incapacitate the victims. The only person that can help him find leads is Gina, his ex-partner. Now, getting Gina to help him is another story all together.

Gina is an...more

This was RED hot and it's a truly beautiful cover!

Detectives Hanson and Griggs have a serial killer on their hands and soon realise that the one thing that connects the victims is the BDSM lifestyle. Hanson turns to his former partner and lover, Gina, for advice as she is heavily involved in the lifestyle. She’d been publicly outed as a dominatrix a few years ago and humiliated and fired by the self-righteous chief of police, Daubs. She’s actually a switch and is now making money as a profession...more

Note: I received this book for free in exchance of an honest review.

Red by Kate Kinsey is a mystery thriller set in the world of S&M, whitch means a serial killer acting around bizarre sex adepts. Not my usual reading style, for sure, but the plot is very tight and catched my atention from start to finish. The story is really well played, and I keep guessing about the identity of the murderer. There are a lot of characters to follow, but it never becomes confusing or distracting. Obviously t...more

I received a copy of this book from the ReadIt&Reap program in the ShutUp&Read group here on Goodreads. This is an excellent program in which authors provide free copies of their ebooks, in exchange for honest reviews.

Red was not the book for me. Let me start by saying that because of the blurb I expected this to be a romantic BDSM erotica about a detective searching for a serial killer. In reality, this book is a whodunit story with a backdrop of BDSM. For me, that is a pretty important...more

Red, a crime thriller with some BDSM elements mixed in, starts with a rather hot-and-heavy scene before quickly showing you how much of a thriller it is going to be. The crime scenes are grotesque but in a realistic way, a la Anita Blake books. The author, Kate Kinsey, is a submissive in the BDSM community and, as I read this book, I felt that she shared lot of insight into that world. She also focuses a lot on how the outside world views BDSM, and how many people within the community feel that...more

4.5 stars rounded up to 5!

OH WOW! This is one disturbing book and it is AWESOME! Red is one series of twists and turns that will keep you reeling. Just when you think you have it all figured out, you get thrown another curve ball!

When I started this I was expecting a BDSM story with a little murder thrown in. What I got instead was a very compelling murder mystery in the BDSM world. It was FREAKIN' FANTASTIC!

The first few chapters were a little difficult to get through as they were all about di...more

This was a pretty good mystery, with a little bit of kinky sex, just to attract the masses I would say, and a little bit of love, strangelove ad Depeche Mode would say.
There's a serial killer that's targeting a BDSM community in the Bible Belt, two ex lover and a stalker. Mix them all together with a twist eventually and you got one good book, that I was afraid, at the beginning, was going to be another slyghtly variation of 50 shades, but thank God I was so wrong!

A dark Thriller where the reader follows the corpses left by a psychopath in the middle of BDSM.

Beyond the particularly bloody murders with victims disfigured and mutilated, there are warning about the dangers of Internet dating. Protections to take when meeting a stranger and being suspicious of charming princes too charming to be true.
Warnings also against judgments and bigotry about non-compliant sexual practices requiring the BDSM lovers to hide and lie to not be viewed like monsters and ev...more

I got this book off a R2R program on Goodreads.com in exchange for an honest review. It's not typically the type of book that I'm interested in, but the blurb caught my attention so I figured...why not? I loved the mystery, it was well thought out and well written. The details of it were great, pulling me in so that I could really picture everything in my mind. Though it starts off smack dab into the erotic, there are m...more

(★★★½) Ambivalent. That's the word which best describes how I felt at the end of RED by Kate Kinsey, a NTM author. But there are many aspects about RED which appealed to me and I snickered at certain banter and asides. And I particularly loved the various quotes and excerpts at the beginning of each chapter. (I would never have had BDSM and Ralph Waldo Emerson in the same thought!) So I would recommend RED to anyone who enjoys suspense mixed with a bit of romance and/or kink. I look forward to t...more

This naughty little novel starts out with a lot of characters and you really have no idea how it could all tie together. In the beginning, I kept feeling like I needed to go back to figure out who was who.

Eventually everything does tie in together and it becomes easier to keep the madness straight. While the story is very good, the characters themselves are fairly flat. They don't have a lot of depth and I feel they could have had more backstory.

My other complaint about this book was the writing...more

The author of 'Red' promises us a story that is well written, a story that doesn't just have kinky sex but an actual plot, and a story written by someone who knows what she's talking about when it comes to the kinky world of BDSM. I have to say, she delivered. This book is an erotic thriller. There's not a lot of romance, but an incredible murder mystery divulging into the world of BDSM that will leave you guessing until the very end and then leave you shocked. Talk about twists you won't see co...more

I liked the plot but just was not satisfied on how it was developed or the character development. Lots of people to keep track of, characters that didn't seem to have chemistry with each other. I also did not like the BDSM depictions, the derogatory comments and slurs towards other lifestyles, and for me put downs, humiliations,& rape just don't excite

This is a fantastic read in every aspect - for fans of BDSM to murder mystery fans, this book just rocks.

Character development is strong - the characters are believable, and you will love and hate the ones the author intends. None are "stock" characters - even the corrupt police chief has some twists that are unexpected - but all are believable and well-defined.

It's an intelligent novel for the intelligent reader - the author's longtime experience in the BDSM "lifestyle" serves to give credence...more

The true man wants two things: danger and play, for that reason he wants woman, as the most dangerous plaything. - Friedrich Nietzche

Hanson and Griggs investigate a series of grisly murders involving individuals involved in the BDSM lifestyle. Hanson was originally partnered with Gina Larsen. They were partners for seven years and lovers for three. The relationship died a slow death, when he was unable to meet her needs to be dominated. When Gina left the force, it was discovered that she was a...more

If you want an erotic thriller with slight hints of romance and a HUGE helping of some honest-to-goodness BDSM, then look no further- the buck stops here.

I would even go as far as 4½♥'s on this book. Overall, the book was well written, complex and layered, very well researched, portrays the 'lifestyle' with brutal honesty, and manages to keep (this) reader guessing along the way. The main reservation I have about awarding a full 5 stars to this would be the beginning 20% of the book. There are a...more

This was a hard read for me. I am familiar with the world of BDSM but this was tough. I did feel like I was getting a private tour into the real lifestyle and not that of a vanilla writer playing with a playroom and some toys.

"A sociopath may be attracted to BDSM, but real kinksters are all about consent. A serial killer isn't."

I thought as a crime novel, a serial killer who done it, the book was decent. In the beginning there were too many Point of Views that had me confused as to who was who...more

If you are looking for a romance BDSM book, then move along. While there is a rekindling of a past relationship between Gina and Hanson, it is just a small part part the story.

This is a mystery/thriller within the BDSM world and I felt the BDSM storyline was more in the vein to educate the reader about the lifestyle than to titillate the reader. I even took it off my erotica shelf.

The story moved very fast and kept my attention. There are several twists at the end with one that I was completely...more

Triggers for rape, assault, gruesomeness

An erotic thriller with a twist ending. Not a romance despite the cover blurb (or at least not a believable one). Decent police procedure although it made a few missteps at the end. Could have been better. The sex scenes are generally all set up for the kill scenes. Not erotic but plenty of pain and degradation. Sex scenes felt gratuitous as did the homophobic, racist cop who ended up being the most decent of all the characters which is saying something.
