Rabban Sawma traveled from China to Rome during the same time Marco Polo traveled from Venice to China. While Polo traveled for economic reasons Sawma traveled on a religious journey. He intended to go to Jerusalem to visit Catholic temples and see relics. He was a Nestorian which is what eastern Christianity eventually became. Their beliefs where not the same as Catholics or Christians.
