Early in the aughts, a composer friend sent me a couple of Thomas Adès's first recordings along with a quizzical note. I played through them and came away with little idea of how they worked. Thought provoking, intense, and sometimes hilarious. A great musical read!

This was tough for someone not actually an expert and coming at it with curiosity but not with all the tools needed to decipher some of the heavier technical and theoretical ideas and language. But there were also wonderful ideas and descriptions that inspired me to want to tackle the music culture so I was more than a dilettante.

No matter what type of art you create, it's always fascinating and enlightening to hear about another artist's process. I am not the biggest fan of Ades' music and composition, but I found this book, and his thoughts, truly beautiful. Highly recommended for anyone who creates.
