I was a bit conflicted when rating this one. I loved the plot, and the 'happily ever' after was great. My problem was that I thrown for a complete loop about halfway through the novella by Grant's reaction to the discovery of Rowan's powers. I've read books where the heroes have had some pretty huge meltdowns, but I can't recall a single instance where he's struck the heroine, and then used some pretty scary interrogation tactics involving a knife! I tried to take into account that the alternate...more
I found this book to be predictable but I didn't immediately dislike it because I enjoyed what little of the world I glimpsed. I feel like I've read this story over and over again and to some degree I have. Romance novels all seem the same lately.
Man and Woman run away from respective homes to avoid responsibility and other things. Man saves Woman. Man takes Woman's virginity. Woman turns out to be something that Man is afraid of. Man gets mad and hateful, then realizes he's being a jack-ass. Ma...more

I am just going to be blunt here – I didn’t like it and I am going to do my own blurb.
An evil magician finds his way to a sheltered land with a population of exiled humans with mind powers. This evil magician is infatuated with a young virgin – Rowan. The evil magician has some control with charisma so no one believes he is evil. Rowan escapes only to be found by a dragon which traps her with a hunky man with a sword – who (secretly) happens to be a prince. Rowan decides that if she can manipula...more

Rowan is on the run from her people to escape a marriage she doesn't want. She lived her entire life in her small village, hidden from those who would persecute them for their special abilities. She was happy there until an outsider wormed his way in and tried to claim her. Rowan could sense the evil inside him and knew that if she didn't flee, she would belong to him.
Shortly after her getaway, she is targeted by a dragon. Fortunately, a handsome man steps in and saves her life. She has no idea...more

This was a bit of a *meh* read due to the length of the story I think. It was a good premise but I found myself wishing for a bit more and I think if it had a bit of a longer treatment this would have been a great read.
Rowan lives in an ultra-protected village where she can use her telekinetic/psychic powers without fear of persecution or death. She is forced to flee the village to the outside world due to an evil man wanting her for his wife. He has confided in her his plans and she seems to be...more

I'm used to reading shorter works now, thanks to the digital revolution, and have been surprised by how much I enjoy the brevity of the format. With Shattered Magic, I feel that the length was the main reason why I can only give it 3 stars.
The shorter format made me feel that a lot of the typical build up (for romance) was absent. The faster pace works with some novellas, but not this one. Other than the whole set-up feeling a tad coincidental, there just wasn't anytime for the relationship to...more

Rowan is what you'd call the standard case of a DID (Damsel in distress) and I don't know if its from all the strong heroine book I usually read that when I started reading this I was beyond annoyed with this book. Everthing she did I had to stop and think how ridiculous she was being (I mean is she for real? She is fictional I know that, but I'm used to stronger female characters. That and the fact she had magic in the beginning when they fought the dragon that was fine, but when she used her p...more

Wow, this was a quickie! When Carolyn said Rebecca York’s SHATTERED MAGIC was going to be quite a short one, I didn’t expect it to be quite so short.
We are introduced to Rowan as she runs away from her life in Valleyhold. She is betrothed to Telman, a man well respected within her community, and something of a hero to the village elders. Rowan and her sister Willow have a differing opinion of him howev...more

Great little short. Very action packed. Loved the heroine Rowan and her love, Grant. I noticed that some didn't like the way our hero reacted to our heroine's magic; I felt it made the story more realistic, more human. After all wouldn't it take awhile to come to grips with prejudice that we were brought up with all our lives? Well written, a great little read for a relaxing afternoon.

short - almost fairy tale story line. good Vs evil; love conquers all. no back story on characters as the story is too short for real development. there is a plot, but again it all comes together too soon. ok read when you want something simple, not thought provoking or challenging - and they lived happily ever after
