I want to write this review while it is fresh in my mind. James Patterson has enough money. Stop having other people write books and putting your name on them. This last one is a piece of drivel that I can't believe I read to the end. I wanted to see how extreme it got. At the end, you could see another series of books coming with the new partners. Don't waste your money (mine came from the library) or your time.

Note to self: The blurb is enough to act as reminder about the whole story.

Technicality: 1st person POV for Zach, but 3rd person POV for the others.

Thoughts:
First, I find it interesting that the main narrator's partner used to be his ex-girlfriend in the academy but she is now happily married with someone else. Enter the city of New York and meet the stars of this show not your everyday actors you see on the widescreen, the net or even on your I Pad but the real life stars that hit the streets, go behind the scenes and protect the rich, famous and those that the mayor would say bring in the big bucks to our city and help create revenue. Hollywood Producer Sidney Roth is dead but no one is really that upset. Hated, feared and definitely not on everyone’s top ten likeable list he’s poisoned right in front of the other diners. Thousands of stars are arriving in our fair city and the red carpet is being rolled out, as Hollywood on the Hudson week is about to begin. The scene unfolds and the actors are in place and the director and producer give the cue and the action begins. But, the ending is not what you or I would write but this director is hiding in plain sight, texting his friend and informing her of his every move and then the curtain falls on Sidney. The show is over and the director calls cut. Next we meet our director in this case posing as an extra in a movie waiting for the temperamental star to alight from her trailer so that his next scene can be played.

Meet Detective First Grade Zach Jordan and his new partner Kylie McDonald about to be thrown into the lion’s den with Sidney’s murder is reported and this is their first case working together. Kylie and Zach were former partners, their personal relationship did not work out and her husband is not thrilled about the assignment or unit she was assigned to. NYPD RED is the special unit created by the Mayor of New York to make sure the rich, famous and highly influential are protected. Fans from all over, media and gorgeous movie stars and the world of Hollywood have now comes front and center. Wealthy producers and directors have descended on the city and the parties are many and the purpose of the Special Task Force, NYPD Red, is to be on high alert to protect those attending the event. Mistakes not to be made. The eyes and ears of the world upon them and with Sidney’s death all over the tube, the media and the net more than just a movie production is about to be made. As Zach and Kylie investigate the case, trying to avoid any mistakes will they survive what is about to happen next?

Imagine orchestrating a murder as if it were a made for TV movie or TV series. A movie producer is killed in front of other diners. An actor is shot and killed when the prop man supposedly but in real bullets and not blanks. The killer, observing both scenes and even questioned by the police is angry that he was not in the spotlight being praised for his deeds. It’s like he needs to be in the center of attention or the main person on the red carpet in order to feel accepted and receive the accolades he thinks he deserves. Along with his girlfriend that seems bent on helping him at any cost this serial killer has just started to create more carnage as the third victim is now in a coma after being the recipient of a Molotov cocktail. With the Police right there and watching the event unfold the NYPD Red Unit was helpless against this man. The event on tape, the cameras in place and yet he manages to get away. Added in he now has another player that seems to want to become part of his operation. With the operation in full swing our killer decides to make sure that his next scene is properly funded so why not commit another murder!

Just where the two detectives wind up when they finally get the name of the killer you won’t believe but will they find him in time to stop what he has planned next? But, when they analyze the evidence think about this killer one person realizes just what this man is doing. Rejections come hard to some people and he’s creating his own movie, his own outcome and the final scene needs to be stopped before this director yells action.

Once again authors James Patterson and Marshall Karp bring to light many important issues when dealing with the film industry. There are some that will do anything to be noticed and get the coveted award and in this case there is one man and maybe more that will do anything to be recognized. Rejections are often swift, harsh and if you are not thick skinned then who knows what goes through the mind of a person that feels unwanted and unaccepted. Let’s get to know the other characters: Captain Delia Cates is the no nonsense head of the NYPD RED UNIT. But, when Zach makes a decision that could ruin his career what happens when the truth comes out? What about his relationship with the department’s head psychiatrist, Cheryl Robinson? Our killer has worked in the film industry as an extra. He is nuts. Staying the background which at first was enough for him but now he’s decided to take center stage by creating his own scripts which include the deaths of many producers, actors and anyone else that he feels has ever betrayed him.

The unexpected happens at a funeral where one of the actors decides to take on the starring role leaving more victims in her path. But, this killer is smart, slick and manages to get away every time. Even convincing the police that he’s a priest and the end result leaves them all wondering what will come next. His next move puts someone close to the investigation in danger as they race the clock to save one man and have no idea that the killer intends to finish what he started with another. With Kylie’s husband, a television producer in danger Jordan and McDonald racing the clock will they get there in time before the bomb explodes? An ending that is more than just heart stopping, explosive and filled with a twist as only these two authors can deliver it.

NYPD RED: A unit that goes above and beyond and whose detectives just want to get the job done. Who gets the glory? Will they get this deranged killer? When will the final scene be played? Lights, camera, and action: This is one scene you definitely don’t want to be in but one book you definitely want to read.

This was the face James Patterson book that I have read in some time that I have truly enjoyed. NYPD Red is an elite police force in the Big Apple dedicated to working on high publicity cases involving celebrities. New York City is gearing up for a week of high intensity events to celebrate the entertainment industry in an attempt to encourage Hollywood to make better use of the city as a filming location. I am a big fan of James Patterson books and when I received NYPD Red I could not wait to start reading.

NYPD Red is about a serial killer fixated on killing as many people connected with films and film making as possible.

The Chameleon is a struggling actor who has and hundreds of parts as an extra in films but has never hit the big time and has now written his own script. He starts to make his own film without a camera and starts his murdering spree by poisoning a prominent Hollywood film director followed by having a famous actor shot and then firebombing a bad boy Hollywood star. This is just the beginning and all in the first day of the Hollywood on the Hudson film festival. The Mayor of New York has invited Hollywood to his city to encourage more filming in NYC, this is a disastrous start.

Detective Zach Jordan and his new partner Kylie MacDonald, an ex-girlfriend he still hasn’t got over, work for the New York Police Department’s High Profile Victims Response Team otherwise known as NYPD Red. This department is tasked with protecting the rich and the famous.
They are tasked with tracking and stopping this serial killer before he can reach his final and deadly conclusion to his script with a much bigger body count. An intelligent master of disguise he seems to be able to outsmart the detectives at every turn.

How many people will die and who will ultimately win this deadly game?

Overall, NYPD Red is a fast paced, action packed thriller with lots of twists and full of suspense. An absolutely thrilling read and so engrossing that I read it in under 24 hours! James Patterson has once again written another very highly entertaining novel, his books always deliver. Full of action and strong characters NYPD Red is well written and a compelling read, as they say “a real page turner”.

If you have never read any of James Patterson before I highly recommend starting with this, if you are already a fan you will not be disappointed.

As usual, anything w/James Patterson's name on it is absolutely amazing!!! This has so many twists/turns (as he is noted for) that it keeps a person wondering what is going to happen next; love the relationship status between the two detectives. As I've prefaced just about every Patterson book review in the past year or so, I always start a new one with a bit of trepidation since way too many seem hastily written and thrown together just to get them in print. But since this latest one has a new (at least to me) co-author, Marshall Karp, I was hoping for bigger and better writing.

I always enjoy a James Patterson read, pretty much no matter who he is co-authoring with. The chapters are short and the dialogue always flows well. There was one glitch in research with using a gun manufactured in the not too distant past on a scene set in the 1940's because they needed a 'period' piece. I was really disappointed with this one. There are so many fantastic crime authors around now, authors that treat their readers like intelligent people, & James Patterson used to be one of them. But this book was pure laziness really.

The writing itself was so simplified & terribly cliched at times that I actually caught myself rolling my eyes. And the fact that the villain was revealed right from the start took any mystery or suspense out of it.

Honestly I was torn about this book at the beginning. I loved the opening scene with the Chameleon. In fact, I pretty much loved every part of the book that involved that character. I think he was the perfect antagonist for the book and I can only the ones that are to follow will be able to live up to that.

Another interesting outing with one of the most prolific writers that I know of. It's kind of unbelievable how many books he puts out, but I keep trying to keep up because I like his style of fast paced action, taunt, sometimes terse chapters and characters that sometimes he fleshes out slowly and sometimes he leaves you wondering.
