4.05 STARS--Can you rate a book those many stars? Well I am so, deal with it. :P
So a non-boring accountant inherits half of a gay bar (The Square Peg) from his father and he has to share the other half with a mouthy Brit? Could be the premise of one naughty joke or pretty good book. Luckily, I found it to be the latter.
The non-boring accountant, Ben has recently been dumped for being too boring (though Ben proved amply why he was not) and the arguments he had the hotheaded Shane read like flirt...more

Estranged father and son relationship, deceased father leaving behind half ownership of a gay bar and a sexy man owning the other half - where have I read this before? If this sounds similar to My Father's Lover by D.J. Manly, this would be half right. Other than these commonalities, everything else is different.
In THE SQUARE PEG, Ben's father left him at a young age. Upon his father's death, he is surprised to learn he's inherited half of a gay bar owned by his father. The other half is deeded...more
I love this author pair and think they write some of the most absorbing BDSM themed m/m books out there. This dealt with Ben who inherits a half share in a gay bar. The other half belongs to bar manager, Shane. The sparks fly between the pair from the start as they struggle to find common ground with renovating the bar as well as fighting an attraction. Things come to a head when they give into lust and discover a new dynamic in the bedroom. I really liked the relationship dynamic in this story....more
Another great book from these authors!! This is a story of self discovery, about a man who thinks he's just a straight-laced accountant until he inherits half a gay bar from his deceased father and has a super hot encounter with the other half owner. This story does contain some rough D/s action, but man was it a hot one!
3,75 stars
Likeable characters in an opposites attract story with hot smut on the rougher side, foot-tappingly slow in the middle with interesting s/m-relationship dynamics that kept me reading - I wouldn`t mind to read more about these two.

This was so much better then what I was expecting. I loved how the authors chose to be different in which character would be the dominant and which would be submissive.
Ben was an accountant who had not long ago broke up with his partner when he inherited from his absent father half of a bar.
Shane was a cocky, mouthy Englishmen who had spent years living and working at the bar for Ben's Dad, and had been left the other half.

Everything about Ben screams uptight including his form fitting suit, accounting profession and need to come into Shane’s bar and change everything. The only problem is, the bar isn’t only Shane’s, it belongs to both of them so somehow they will need to learn to work together.

Well written and easy to read
Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.
Rating: 7/10
PROS:
- The authors do a great job of characterizing the two main guys quickly and very early on in the story. Ben, for example, walks into the Square Peg at the beginning of the book and straightaway begins scrutinizing the furnishings, the atmosphere, the patrons, and even the way the lemons are cut. It’s clear almost immediately that he’s detail-oriented and straight-laced to the po...more

2.75 stars. Story of a bar named The Square Peg which (since the elderly owner's death) is now half-owned by two very different men. Shane, an expat Brit, who is the long-time manager and has a big emotional investment in The Square Peg. And Ben, the old man's neglected son, who wants to shed his stuffy accountant persona and prove he's got the talent and balls to make a go of it.
Who could resist that plot set-up. It's fabulously interesting. I continued to enjoy the story of the bar and it's de...more

I had mixed feelings about this book. At some points I flew through the pages, eager to see what would happen next, and at other points, I was tapping my toes.
Let me start with the things that had me flying through pages:
• The clean writing. The authors use clear, precise sentences to convey information, and they employ many of the senses in any given scene. That led to a more tactile experience of the book, where I felt, smelled, and heard as well as saw the story being played out.

An accountant and a British guy walk into a bar...
I love these authors! They create good stories that build nicely from beginning to happy ending with a little light bdsm in between. Benedict was living a vanilla life as an accountant until his long-term boyfriend dumped him for being too boring and his father died, leaving him half ownership in a local gay bar. Shane manages said bar and is content knowing that it's a dive and struggling financially. He has an angry kinda personality and loathe...more

Jane Davitt is a "Must Read" for me now. I love that her MCs are not stereotype, are not always perfect, do things they are not comfortable and make mistakes. I love how she changed the dynamics between Ben and Shane and made me believe it.
There was this moment in the book when I tought "Okay - that's it, that's too much for me." Funny that I don't cringe at a spanked butt but that moment sounded too much like domnestic violence for me....but then...the Jane DAvitt made it work again. It wasn't...more

Imagine that there's something about yourself, your sexuality or your personality that you do not understand. Imagine that you have never been in a relationship or had sex with someone who just GOT you.
These authors aways do such a great job in working as a team, making a book work seamlessly despite the two authors. In many ways, their working relationship must feel like a romantic partnership: one balances the other to make a complete picture.

I am a big fan of these two authors, alone and separately, and The Square Peg is a wonderful representation of their talents. Ben, is a button-upped accountant whose ex just dumped him for being “boring” in the midst of his father’s recent death. (The ex is a real sweetheart, right?) When he finds out he’s inherited half of a gay bar, instead of selling his half to the other owner, Shane, he decides to take a chance and renovate the place and see if they can make it a winning business propositio...more
I would actually give this story about three and a half stars, it was better than just three, but not quite a four (for me, that is). The plot was interesting, the characters had enough quirks and personality to create interest. There was a kind of "back and forth" between the characters that was emotionally inconsistent. It felt the two protagonists exchanged reservations concerning emotional involvement or fear of commitment. Meaning, the behavior of one was more consistent with the personalit...more
4.5 stars. I really enjoyed this one but I tend to like about everything from this writing team. I especially liked that the characters weren't what was typically written. Shane, the tough talking bar owner, ended up having more submissive qualities with Ben. Ben, the straight laced accountant, was the dom. That wasn't the typical stereotypes for men in those positions. So often, the nerdy accountant is the sub and the tough talking bar owner the dom. I enjoyed the mixing of that up. Shane being...more
Loved the chemistry between the two MC's -totally rocking the whole opposites attract thing. And I loved that it was the supposedly boring, uptight accountant who discovered his kinky dom side. The fact that it didn't always sit comfortably with him at first made it way more real ...and interesting. Enough of these smug, all-knowing doms who never reveal one iota of doubt or vulnerability!
Not quite as good as Room at the Top but I found it a thoroughly enjoyable read!

Really enjoyed this book and will look forward to further stories as hinted by a strategically placed lead into another storyline.

I'd been waffling about reading this one for a while but I'm so glad I did. I really ended up liking these guys a lot and I have to admit, the sex scenes were incredible hot with just the right amount of dominance from Benedict (an unlikely source). Although face-smacking is always a little too much for me, everything else had a very good balance and was never really too rough. I would have liked to see Ben do a tiny bit of BDSM research or something though to ensure he was being 'safe & san...more
The MCs are great. They're well characterized from the beginning and have a good range. The D/s elements are spontaneous and sexy, but at times a bit unbelievable. Ben, reasonably, is constantly questioning his desire to suddenly be so intensely Dominant. However, he rushes into pretty dangerous territory in the heat of the moment without consulting Shane or thinking about it. It definitely shocked me out of the sexy times at a couple points.
Otherwise, this is a very engaging, well-crafted love...more

I really enjoyed this one and couldn't put it down! I loved the characters, the dialogue including the amusing bickering, and the way their relationship progressed. I enjoyed the overall plot, although I could have done without one event. (view spoiler) I liked watching Ben and Shane fall in love, and the connection felt real.

This books has been a hard read. I enjoyed the non traditional relationship and the premise was interesting and I enjoyed the characters. But, for all that I did feel like the pacing was a little off. It was felt like the middle of the book lacked a little tension the overal story arc was a little uneven. It was the last third of the book where it really picked up for me and I found myself a little more engaged with the story and I can assure I am thoroughly looking forward to reading Vin's stor...more
Loved this book. I cannot wait til the sequel comes out. I want Vin to get his HEA soooo bad. I just loved him. I loved the 2 MCs in this book too though, Shane and Ben. I was really surprised at their relationship dynamic. I expected it to be the other way around, but it really worked. I could've done with a little more sappiness but there wasn't a complete lack of love declarations, just a deficit, so I can deal.

3 1/2 stars!
While I enjoyed the story I couldn’t help picking it apart a bit while I read it. Yet, I would recommend it to someone who is looking for a gay BDSM book, so obviously it was overall a pleasing book. I hope there will be more books set in The Square Peg bar because a number of interesting characters were introduced in this book.

I'm a huge fan of these authors. That said, I haven't loved everything they've written.
The Square Peg was lovely. I loved the MCs, the kink, and the story. Was it perfect? No, but nothing is. Was it worth five stars? Absolutely.
Definitely one of my favorites this year and one of my feel-good stories.
There is a sequel, though? Please? Too many things were hinted at or started with the secondary characters... Need more!

This was an enjoyable read. I would have rated it higher if there was more background/depth to the character development.
This is BDSM in it's 'natural' environment. The kind of kink you might engage in if you don't go the way of the club scenes. There was no toys, leather, whips or cuffs...instead you get loving submission & tentative dominance morphing into, what I suspect, will ultimately end it a TPE relationship. I would love for that book to be written BTW.

Another enjoyable read by Jane Davitt. Not as heavy into BDSM as some of her other books, The Square Peg still has two diverse m/m characters reacting on their lust with light dominance and submission and ultimately discovering their love for each other.
Heh...not doing it for me. Not feeling the chemistry.
It's this author's writing for me I've realised after three books. There's no believability in the attraction, in the sex, I've kink. Staid writing...dunno if it's an English thing, but I can't feel any undercurrents or energy at all.
Well written but stiff for me. DNF.
