Let me begin by admitting that I did like this novelette. But it wasn't because it was full of life changing truth or magnificently well written.

The book begins with a prologue that gives the ending away. The prologue is your awful friend that couldn't keep their mouth shut and RUINED the ENTIRE novel. I would have appreciated some mystery there--and any near cliffhanger after that is given away without the reader ever having to work for it. I like surprises in my fiction!

I got this book last year, although I cannot remember if it was a free book or if I bought it. Since it’s a novella I decided to add it to my list of books to read before 2014 on Goodreads. Although I realized that this was a series and I was starting at the 4th book, I did not have any moments where I felt lost.

I found this book to be surprisingly very interesting, cute and cheesy but in a good way! Lady Anne’s reputation has been ruined and the last thing she wants is to let it happen all over

I realized within the first couple of chapters that I may be in the middle of a series, so I looked it up on GoodReads and found that yes, this is the 4th out of 6 book series. Ms. Maclean does a good job of not making the reader feel that there is more of a back story so I decided to continue on with the story. The beginning is really well done. I felt that the prologue was a good teaser, the first two chapters where we meet the heroine and hero are interesting, and even though the family is la ...more

Of all of MacLean's books, I've loved the American Heiress and Pembroke Palace series the best. I've been waiting FOREVER to read Garrett's story (Pembroke Palace)and I read it while on the plane on the way to a conference. I should have known better. It's very conspicuous when you cry while flying and this book made me do it twice. It is tender, emotional, funny, and simply a delight. Totally worth the wait and I'm so pleased to know that Charlotte is getting her own story as well!

Married by Midnight is for people who...

...enjoy a quick and easy historical romance. women who are determined to be independent...
...but who listen to their heart when the chips are down.
...enjoy dank and twisted catacombs that bring about steamy kisses.

A quick read with some interesting family dynamics and bonus fake ghost howlings.

This was a cute read but hate to say it a bit silly and naïve.

Lord Garret Sinclair does not wish to get married but his father commands him to marry before Christmas if he wants to save his family fortune and so he is left without an option but to find a bride who is willing to be married on paper and to disappear after the marriage is consummated.

Lady Anne has been ruined by a scandal and disowned by her father. She knows getting married is no longer an option but at the same time she wishes t

Lord Garrett is to marry Lady Anne before midnight on Christmas Eve to forstall a family curse that the Duke believes will strike otherwise.

It is strictly a business arrangement, but when the two actually meet, things change.

This story wasn't bad, but there were some inconsistancies with the historical period, not the leasts among them the use of CPR to revive a boy who fell through the ice. There were some word usage issues as well and the fact that regardless of who his father was, Garrett wou
I must start off by saying that as of this moment I haven't read the other books in this series. The good thing is that fact didn't take away from this story.

Yes, I want to know how the romances came about for the siblings that came before Garrett, so in that case I will go back and read the other books in the series.

Anyway, Lady Anne is shunned by her family and society for a youthful indiscretion and living with a relative that she doesn't really like and who only tolerates her when she is a

The reason for the marriage of convenience that propels the plot is the duke who is the legal, if not biological father of the hero, has written a will stating if all his sons are not married by Christmas of that year, all the unentailed property of the estate will be left to the London Horticultural Society, thus impoverishing the family.

Problem 1: Dukes, in England of the time were extremely wealthy; with large estates consisting of land that produced income. The bulk of th

I do so love broken characters! Anne is a soiled dove, ruined by scandal a few years ago and hiding with her uncle in e country. When she is offered a proposal to marry in a sham marriage, with a contract providing her with an income to support herself independently, she agrees. Garrett is the bastard son of the Duke, though no one outside the family knows it. He is haunted by his past, so when his father announces hat if he doesn't marry by Christmas Eve, all of his brothers and himself will be ...more
I enjoyed the storyline. I enjoyed the characters. I was dissapointed in the overtly physical focus within the relationship developement between Anne and Garrett. I only saw the physical attraction and follow thru (which was much too soon for my taste) with little emotional foundation to make the relationship real and lasting. Yes both needed the other, characters being well developed, that is evident but there is no evidence of how they found the other to fulfill those needs. Just drooling attr ...more
Here’s another author I never got a chance to read, Julianne MacLean.

This is a tale that’s part of a Pembroke Palace series and although I haven’t read any of the other books, I found the story standing on its own very well.

Here we have an old Duke, hero’s father, who believes that if his sons are not married by Christmas, their family is destined to be cursed. In order to foil this curse, he takes it upon himself to insure it never comes to that.

It’s Garrett’s turn to fulfill his father’s will

The Duke of Pembroke, who is on his way to madness, believes there's a curse on his house/family, so he demands that all four of his sons marry by Christmas or else he'll give his entire estate to the Horticultural Society of England. Garrett, his youngest son, left home 7 years ago after a blow up with the Duke, who is not is biological father and who has always treated him badly. Historical English romance with a bastard youngest son to a duchess who comes home after living on the Mediterranean sea for the past seven years to find out that he needs to get married before Christmas so his older (legitimate) brothers pick out and arrange a marriage to a beautiful kind noble daughter who has a scandal in her past.

This was a wonderfully written short story. I have not had the pleasure of reading any Julianne’s novels before but I certainly will try to find the time now, especially the original three Pembroke Palace stories. She has a very pleasant writing style, and I enjoyed her characters.

This fourth installment of her series is a sweet romantic short story and just the perfect in-between novel selection to break up all the thrillers and convoluted story plots that I have been reading lately. You didn’t

A witty, passionate historical romance! Taken from my review at

Lady Anne Douglas has spent the past four years caring for her ailing grandmother. But this had been an act of love, not duty. After all, her grandmother had been the only one who had not judged her for being less than pure. Four years ago, she had unsuccessfully run off to elope with her tutor. Afterwards, being ruined, she had prepared herself to live out the rest of her days as a spinster, convinced no man woul

An achingly sweet novella, MARRIED BY MIDNIGHT, will engage you from beginning to end. Julianne MacLean has added an absolutely gem to her Pembroke Palace series.

The Duke of Pembroke needs all of his sons married before Christmas or a horrible curse will plague them and they will lose their inheritance forever. The latter being the most devastating to the sons, they strive to make sure this doesn't happen. Which is why they turn to the devastatingly beautiful Lady Anne Douglas with an intriguing
Lady Anne Douglas had no hopes of marriage, after the scandal that ruined her reputation and also left her disowned from her father and brother, and the only reason why her uncle took her in was to take care of her ailing grandmother, but now that she is gone he even is looking for way to be rid of her. Charming and funny read!
I just finished "Married by Midnight" by Julianne MacLean!
This novella is the fourth book in the Pembroke Palace series!
Being a fan of Ms. MacLean, I really enjoyed this charming and romantic story of Garrett Sinclair and Lady Anne Douglas. If you have read the previous books, you will recall that the Duke of Pembroke had gone mad and was sure that a cursed was placed on his family.
He orders his sons to marry and give him an heir to break the curse. But Garrett does not

Love a good historical read? You'll love this one!

I found this to be a different type of historical romance novel. It was wonderful how Julianne pulled everything together, with the twists and turns of the events that she's played out. Past scandals on both sides, the building of trust, loyalty and love. This book totally ROCK'S! Much thanks Julianne for the awesome works of art!
This is a decent historical/period romance novel, although a bit on the short side. The relationship between Anne and Garrett happens at somewhat of a fast pace but an understandable one given that a) this is a romance novel and b) they must be married by a certain date or they'll be disinherited.
"Married by Midnight" by Julianne MacLean is the 4th book in her Pembroke Palace series. Don't fret that you would be totally lost by starting this one. I felt that it truly was a stand alone book and focused mostly on youngest son, Garrett and his (brother ordered) bride, Anne. I felt that MacLean reminds me a little bit of Johanna Lindsay's Malory novels. Since MacLean already devoted her first three books to the three oldest brothers, they and their wives remain mostly in the background. As w ...more

I enjoyed this book it was a quick lighthearted read that left me smiling!

Although MacLean wrote this novel as part of a series, I read it as a stand alone and found that it reads excellent as a stand alone novel or a late introduction to the series. I never felt lost or that I was missing information but was left interested in the stories of the other characters, which can be found in the other books of the series.

Overall I felt that MacLean did a wonderful job in stopping the romance from bein
