This story's underlying sensuality is blended into sexual submission with a magical being. Técun is a powerful man in this universe yet something more, god like in his world. Cassandra's family line is entwined with Técun's entry to this world. Cassandra's attraction while not preordained, is expected once her grandmother's journal is revealed.

This story is a nice blend of paranormal romance with erotic BDSM nuances. Ms. Burkharts does an excellent job of generating heat between the two main characters. Cassie is a believable everyday woman who is easy to understand and admire. She may have some fears, but she's no pushover. Técun is this sexy mysterious man, literally the man of her dreams come to life. If only the dreams were a bit more explicit to satisfy this voyeur's cravings. When the two characters meet, their continued physical interludes increase in intensity and kink factor. The blood play is written in such a way that is very arousing rather than alarming. HOT!

Ms. Burkhart crafts more than a tale of erotic awakening. This tale is about a family line linked with mythical Mayan gods and legendary creatures. The villain in this story shows up a bit later than anticipated. It's interesting how the villain is portrayed. He was loved yet he perpetrated evil. The surprising twists in who loved and hated him added another layer to this story. It made the antagonist more understandable in his responses and actions. It also generates a bit of pity. The ending while fitting is a bit sad for him. For Técun and Cassie, each joining brings new delights. Hint - where can one receive tattoos like the ones Cassie was given? This book is recommended for kinky paranormal readers who enjoy a bit of Mayan culture.

It’s crammed full of legend and mythology, and when you add in a sexy warrior who is needed to save his people, get ready for a good read, because the way he does that is sensual and wild!

After a near-death experience, Cassandra has been having very mysterious and erotic dreams about a man who leaves her nearly in pain when he vanishes after such intense lovemaking. A family journal gives her insight to the past, so Cassie heads to Guatemala to face her dreams to find out if she’s crazy or if she truly has the power to bring this legend back to life to fight a coming evil.

Arriving in Central America, Cassie and her best friend find a guide and a terrific source of information in Jose, a distant relative of Cassie’s. With both the journal and Jose’s help, she makes contact with Técun, her dream lover. He truly is real and is waiting for her to help him through the gate into the world of the living once again. Ms. Burkhart’s imagination in this instance delves deeply into the lore of the Guatemalan people. Técun didn’t survive the battle against his enemy, he failed in protecting his people. It’s the fact he stood tall and proud to fight, despite the knowledge he’d die. He’s revered for his courage and spirit. He makes his way back each time the Guatemalans need him, and this time it’s an especially devious enemy.

Once Técun is with Cassandra, she has him in the flesh, she doesn’t want to lose him like she has too many nights so far. Therefore, she agrees to the ritual necessary to help him regain his power before it’s too late and the enemy is too strong to be defeated. That ritual includes loving the woman practically to death and she revels in all that hardness and wildness. Técun’s fearful that he’ll hurt her, but Cassie knows he’d never go that far, enjoying his intensity and roughness anyway. Even after all this, their plans don’t go exactly as they’d hoped. The enemy is much more difficult to vanquish than they’d thought.

While this is an entertaining and imaginative read, what it lacks is the depth of character I enjoyed in the first book book by Ms. Burkhard I read just a month or so ago, Yours to Take. I realize TBW is a shorter story and it’s more difficult to flesh out such things, but for me that emotional attachment to characters is just something that can’t be overlooked. I don’t feel as invested in Técun and Cassandra as I was with Elias, Vicki, and Jesse. But for a quick trip into the myths of the Maya, this book does satisfy on a lighter level.

I haven't read either the full story that came before (The Bloodgate Guardian) or the short piece that she released in preparation for this book to come out (Bloodgate). I know. Shame on me. I haven't read them for the simple reason that I fell off the blog reader radar for a while, and missed the release of the first novel. Then I figured I'd wait for this one before reading either of the two. And, having read The Bloodgate Warrior, I can tell you that I will be reading the other two stories.

This book, even though it's a sequel, doesn't seem to have much in the way of spoilers for the first book. The one thing that I did pick out as potential spoiler material is that the main characters from The Bloodgate Guardian survive and get together at the end. But you know what? It's a romance. And it's a Joely book. Happy Endings (even if they're just Happy For Now endings) are a given.

One thing that this book (likely the series) makes me want to do is research Mayan history and legends. I read the blog Joely posted on Carina Press about the similarities between Mayan legend and the Arthurian legend. I love that kind of story, and so this one was a joy for me. I especially loved finding out after the fact that this was a real Mayan legend, and not just something Joely made up.

To balance the love I had for the similarities to the Arthurian legend, I'm going to point out the part I liked the least. Some of the sex scenes (which I've come to learn Joely writes really well) also involve blood. I'm not a fan of mixing blood and sex, personally. I understand that it's part of the magic system Joely has created for this world. Do note that it's not done in a way that makes me squeamish at all. It's just not my cup of tea.

Long story short? This is a really good read. It's got strong characters (including a heroine who comes into her own by the end) and a solid plot. The supporting characters are nicely developed as well, even if they don't get nearly as much screen time as the main characters. This is definitely worth picking up and reading, especially since Amazon makes it so easy to purchase. (less)

This one was a smoking hot read but a bit disturbing at times with all the biting, scratching and bleeding. Let's just say they both like it a bit rough and fighting is definitely encouraged.

She decides to go on vacation to Guatemala to see if there is any truth to the diary and if this will hold the answers to why she is experiencing these incredible yet disturbing dreams about a warrior. As she and her friend enter Guatemala there is an earthquake which does play a part later in the story.

Técun is the warrior Cassandra has been dreaming of. He turns out to be a Mayan god who actually is a being from another dimension. He is Alpha, scary, loyal, devoted, and much much more to both her and his people. He has returned to our world to finish off his mortal enemy who killed him in his last incarnation. He likes to dominate and her blood helps strengthen his hold on power plus bring him in to this world again. She opens a portal that allows him to come to her in the flesh and complete their bonding.

Part of this bonding includes him biting her to drink her blood but in doing so he not only marks her with his magic but she gets a really neat tattoo. They both come together many times in this book both in dreams and in one majorly hot yet disturbingly bloody sacrificial scene that while both get incredible orgasms had me a bit squeamish with all the biting, clawing and blood drawing that occurred.

Take a chance on this read because the Mayan references and details were wonderful to see.

A nice quick read but if blood letting, biting and extreme control are not your thing you might want to be a bit careful.

Kind of a crazy mash-up of Gothic PNR and bdsm erotica featuring Mayan gods and demons.

The worldbuilding was much easier to follow than in the first book, and sometimes made me laugh (zombie conquistadors!). Cassie and her friend Natalie travel to Guatemala. Ever since her near death experience, Cassie has had erotic dreams that feature a Mayan God named Técun. Wondering if there's a connection between her dream warrior and her family's past, the journey begins.

After another vivid dream, Cassie starts searching old historical sites in hopes of finding out where Técun died in hopes of bringing him back. Once back, sparks fly between the two and we get some pretty steamy page time. But of course it's never that easy. Técun's enemy Alvarado is back as well and he has some sinister plans of his own...

This is book 2 in the series. I'll admit, I have not read The Bloodgate Guardian but I don't think that affected reading this in any way. This is exactly what I hope for when reading a shorter story. The developments happen pretty quickly but aren't forced, the plot has a good resolution... This hot, quick read is a great way to spend a few hours.

Yes there is violents and sexy. That is what put’s the story together.

I do not know why, but it seems to me that recently every paranormal romance is quite similar to something else I've already read. Maybe I have to go back to science fiction. Anyway here the heroin is a contemporary girl with ancestors from Guatemala, that has to make a God live again with blood and love and sex, of course.

Okay...I liked this so much I read it a couple of times already. It has everything I love to be entertained by: action, blood, and sex. What can I say, eros and thanatos does it for me every time.
