In her first novel. Hofmann plumbs the highs and lows of familial relationships and the knots of unrequited love - creating a story of a woman who grows, despite overwhelming tragedy.
The novel transforms the subject into a long lyrical poem of passionate love - complete with stunning erotic passages and glowing philosophical insights.

The main character, Marie, emerging f

A wonderful story of such heartbreaking beauty - a love supressed, duty vs the heat of passion. The characters in this story are vividly drawn, and Marie (protagonist) is a fully fleshed out character. We see her change and grow and come to her middle age with the knowledge of the kind of unconditional love we all deserve, but are never ready to admit we need. Manny (her soul mate) is less fully drawn but that is ok. Manny is more a symbol to me anyway, and in Marie's mind represents the worth ...more

I just finished reading this book and I can not stop thinking about it. This was one of those stories that makes you want to reflect on your own life and find those pivotal moments that led you to where you are now. Although a work of fiction, the characters seemed so real and I felt a lump in my throat at the end, as if I just lost someone dear to me.

"Life was like that. It was only a loan, and you had to watch it over obsessively, everyday, and wait for the day when someone came to collect t

I read this book because it was recommended in a Facebook group I belong to. I lived in Ridgewood most of my young life and the author depicted it beautifully. I loved this book because it was wonderful. The love story was amazing. I too married at a young age because it was the thing to do, in my case an older coworker kept saying " why buy the cow if you could get the milk for free". The sex scenes were very real, including the early ones when Marie was young. I wish she would have ended it ...more

The love story between "Marie and Manny" is one that most dream about. One Hand Waving Free depicts a woman's whirlwind and secretive life, filled with romance, obstacles, heartache and most of all happiness. The courage written through Hoffman's words prove a continued struggle of a lifelong journey. This is a must-read book! Once you pick it up, you will not be able to put it down! What a beautiful story depicting love, life and everything between. There is no doubt in my mind, I will be ...more

This book is different from any I have ever read. One Hand Waving Free makes you feel like you are being pulled into a life, instead of flipping pages. It was refreshing reading a novel where the main character isn't afraid to be more than just a hero. You recognize her weaknesses and find them within yourself, and if you are very lucky, her strengths as well. If you are looking for a novel about love, friendship and loss, this is it.
