Uncle Toby had said that there would be castles to explore, with ghosts and things. This helps to cheer up the glum twelve-year old Lovell twins, Tom and Mary, leaving their schools and loving parents to be evacuated to wild Northumbria during World War II.

Then the adventure begins. They live with their Aunt Victoria and Uncle Leslie, meet the loveable ‘Mrs M’, a strange d

A stirring tale for young readers (and us oldsters) of the beginning of World War II in England, “Once Upon A Castle” serves up nostalgia-and predicted fear-for today’s readers, whether we lived through the events of this War or just have studied our history.

Young twins, Tom and Mary, are returned home from their respective rural boarding schools to London, where they discover their father, a Navy captain, has already shipped out; and their mother,

I had the pleasure of reading one of Alan's other works, Cry of the Machi, and was thrilled for the opportunity to read his children's book. Again, Alan has not left me disappointed!

This is a rather short book, around 75 pages, but a delightful read for kids and pre-teens. But a head's up for parents, your kiddo may need help with understanding a few words throughout the book, or use it as a great opportunity to sit and read together!

True to Alan's style, he paints beautiful portraits of the set

Once Upon a Castle transports children to England in 1939 and weaves facts into a ghost story revolving around a mysterious castle beautifully. I immediately fell in love with the story as I read and realized that the writer had not watered down his choice of words for the intended audience. The vocabulary is rich and descriptive, pulling you in.

I wish I could have given the story five stars, but I felt the story was underdeveloped in the end, leaving out details and it ended too hastily. I feel

A wonderful ghost story set in world war II England. A story to sit with your children and warm cocoa. Very enjoyable.

Very interesting read, it was! Alan Blood's book, "Once Upon a Castle," reminds me of the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe a little, especially when Mary and Tom, the children, try to go to Northumberland Castle.

It's the early 1940's, when World War II is beginning, and the children have to go live with their cousin Victoria and Uncle Leslie while their mother, a nurse, is needed for the war efforts. Plus, their father, a naval captain, is already on the front lines,

1939 in Britain brought the war home with a vengeance and many London children were either sent to the country to stay with relatives or unknown families who volunteered to take them in. Among these are Tom and Mary Lovell, 12-yr old twins sent to live with their Aunt Victoria and Uncle Leslie.
Vicky and Uncle Leslie run a huge farm and don’t have a lot of time to spend with the kids so they find their own entertainment. They also find a cute small dog they name Scamp. The only odd thing is they

This book is a real pleasure to read. Twins, Tom and Mary, return home from English boarding school during WWII, only to go to their family’s relatives in Northumbria to wait out the war and its dangers near their home. Though reluctant initially to go, they soon become enthralled with the farm and area where they are sent. A one-day excursion/escape to look for a well known castle leaves everyone, including the twins, with and appreciation of safety along with strange memories. The author has d ...more

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the story concept, but just felt it was lacking some. Being a short story sometimes the authors feel they need to overlook some details, but this one could use more. Then when the end came it seemed the author didn't know how to close it so it just ended abruptly. The author shows lots of potential but this one just didn't measure up.

Due to WWII, twins, Mary & Tom, are being relocated to the country while their parents serve in the war effort. While there, they intend to explore a castle and stumble across an ancient legend. Or is it childhood imagination?

A vivid and delightful narrative captures the reader and propels the story and characters through the adventures.

Characters are inventive, varied, colorful, and caring.

Overall, an enchanting read.
