First off, I love historical fiction. If you don't like history or a ton of historical references, know that this book is full of them. It's set in the Roaring 20s, so obviously you will have large servings of history. People left some negative reviews because they didn't get half the stuff he was talking about and said they had to constantly stop and Google things to understand. And, what's wrong with that? Come on, now. Don't give a book a negative review because it's not YOUR style even thoug...more
I received this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. And, to be honest, I was not sure what to expect. Since I have a minor in history, the concept behind this book was extremely interesting. For a long time, I always wondered what would have happened if the South and successfully seceded from the nation. Smith does a wonderful job showing that throughout the whole book!

This is by no means a science fiction or fantasy novel but I did feel like The Jazz Cage had a definite "alternate universe" feel to it. I mean, come on the SOUTH wins the Civil War!!! Anyone who knows their history can definitely see this as a very bad thing...but it does make for an interesting concept for a mystery/crime thriller. I see the time period-the twenties-very important because that still wasn't too far from the Civil War and p...more

The Jazz Cage by Ray Chen Smith is part historical fiction, part thriller and all action. Reading this book felt like sitting in the theater watching an action flick. Bits of it were farfetched and somewhat illogical, but it did not matter. The action fit with the pace of the story and kept you on the edge of your seat. I imagine this is what it was like reading those cowboy novels and detective books from years-gone-by.
Ray Chen Smith certainly does not suffer from a lack of imagination. He has...more

The Jazz Cage is a tale of what ifs. What if the South won the Civil War? What if slavery still existed? What if the Underground Railroad still existed? What if Arnold Rothstein and not his Italian counterparts created the mafia organization known as the syndicate? All of these what ifs are thrown in and mixed together to create an intriguing tale.
It’s a very well-written novel and the pace flows between characters and the tension builds to the expected climax. There are bad guys chasing Frank a...more

If the South won the Civil War … That’s the premise for the “Roaring Twenties” thriller The Jazz Cage. Author Ray Smith sent me an e-copy for review (sorry about the wait, Ray!) and told me, “Think of it as Uncle Tom’s Cabin meets The Untouchables.“
The description fits. On one hand, The Jazz Cage is about two runaway slaves trying to find freedom, but it’s got some booze, corruption, and gangster-style gunfighting, too. As I’ve said in previous po...more

This type of novel is completely out of my comfort zone. But I do like to challenge myself once in a while and explore other genres. I did something that generally I do not do. I checked out the reviews prior to taking this book on. They were all positive.
Am I glad that I chose this novel to be adventurous with. WOW! What a ride! From beginning to end, this author kept me guessing and riveted to the edge of my seat. I NEVER knew what was going to hap...more

I could have used a bigger reminder that the South won. It's kind of hard going from everything I know and try to get into something that's not.
It will totally wrap you up in the story (once you suspend reality) I just don't think I'll be remembering it in a few weeks.
