Forget any preconceptions you may have about Robert Blake and read this book. He is a storyteller of the first magnitude. Imagine going to a party. It's a nice party, but not too exciting. You step out onto the balcony to get some air, and there's a fellow out there smoking and looking at the stars. You say, "Hey, how's it going?" He says, "You really wanna know?" Not wanting to be a jerk, you say, "Um, sure." And then he starts telling you stories about his life. And your jaw starts to drop. An...more

I found this read very compelling. I have heard people declare some vocalists to be "a singers singer," well Bobby Robert Blake is a consumate story teller. Yep. He is "a story tellers story teller."
It was a profoundly moving, insightful read. I love everything "old Hollywood," and he can tell some stories. He tells very real stories about people from the past who he loved, respected and who loved him in return. It is a very reflective piece of work. He waxes philophical often and he definitely...more

I've been waiting for this book since Mr. Blake did a two part interview with Tavis Smiley last year. I thought I'd like it, but "like" doesn't do Blake's recollections justice. Inexplicably poetic and rich with anecdotes about life that started in Nutley NJ and took him to Hollywood, Blake looks deep into his abusive childhood with two miserable parents and the joy he found when he was away from home entertaining people and making them smile. From his first exposure as rascal Mickey to his care...more

Reading Tales of a Rascal: What I Did For Love brings forth the feeling of riding a roller coaster wearing a blindfold. Imagine yourself sitting at a deli on Ventura Blvd. Every day an actor with ramrod posture and flint eyes slides into a booth across from you. His hair is gray beneath a black Stetson. The eyes are those of a young man with an ageless soul. As is his daily custom, he sticks one photograph on the table. He locks eyes with you and begins to tell a story. One day it's a black and...more

Robert Blake was my Hero as a kid. Never missed Baretta. My family bought this book for me. One of the best biography's I ever read. You find out why he may be the way he is. Wonderful read

I've never read anything like this. Neither have you. Blake puts his soul out here and we're supposed to critique this as a mere book? Not that I don't have a reverence for books! I'm just saying that it's a very strange feeling to give a star rating to a soul. His soul is as big as the universe, and as indomitable. He *is* tenderness, and heartache, and funny as hell.

He is a gifted writer. The book starts with sometimes hilarious and often poignant anecdotes involving people he's known and/or...more
