Kent Sorensen manages to take the reader on a business venture filled with intrigue, corruption, serious action and with a romance for good measure. Kip Duchene arrives in Shanghai to do his usual turnaround of a housing development in serious trouble. The problems are that he doesn't speak Chinese, doesn't know anything about the culture and tries to apply his tried and true practices where they don't work. Behind the intrigue is a man of violence who seeks revenge for the US bombing of the ...more

Riveting action springs The Dark Horse of Shanghai directly into the path of cultural conflicts between East and West. When the two distinctly different worlds collide over the business of a shoreline development, the underbelly of corruption rips Kip Duchene from his alcoholic stupor. In order to survive, he learns to open his grief striken eyes to fight for what's right. The undercurrents of Chinese corruption must not win. Along the way Duchene observes many details of modern day Chinese ...more

The Dark Horse of Shanghai is an intriguing action thriller novel that includes adventures, multi-cultural understanding, visual graphic presentation of the Chinese countryside and specifically Shanghai, the strength of family and friendship bonds, and a little whimsical romance intertwined together. The novel is unique in how it is presented from an American businessman's viewpoint doing business in China. Kent Sorensen's vast knowledge of international business combined with his creative ...more

Nick and I did not want to put this book down. We downloaded it to our Kindle and took it with us on our road trip. I read the entire book out loud to my husband as he was driving. I would read until I was hoarse and had to take a break. The story kept us guessing the whole time of what would happen next. We could not wait to read the next chapter and the next.

Fantastic read! Sorensen hit it out of the park! I found myself thinking of the characters throughout the day and excited to continue reading when I got home from work. The Dark Horse of Shanghai left me wanting more... Can't wait to see what adventures Kip will go on next!

This writer has captured the essence of what Shanghai China is in this action thriller. With his detailed descriptions of characters and locales. Sorensen has the ability to put the reader right where he wants them. Smack dab in the action of this international conflict where Kip Duchenne is challenged not only by his internal conflicts but external conflicts and obstacles that are put in his way by the dark horse. For a first right Sorensen has been able to evoke such emotion as laughter and ...more

This is an action thriller that everyone that likes the genre should have. This intriguing story includes adventure, action, and last but not least, romance. The clashing personalities of two important characters is what kept me going: on the one hand, Rico Nui is power hungry and greedy, and on the other, Kip is loyal and friendly.

Danger, intrigue and excitement roil through this compelling story as Kip and Sal team up to save Shanghai Shores, a failing apartment complex in Shanghai. A powerful evil character, Rico, intent on sabotaging their effort, presents them with more than one challenge.

Kip is something of a business superman, albeit with a flaw, and Sal is his lifelong friend from the tough side of the tracks. These two main characters are interesting and well cast by their dialogue. The aspect of Western vs. Chine

I love the genre, and the story line was riveting (almost) but it took me three weeks to get through it because of the poor editing and choppy style. Too many gratuitous "fuck you"s and Spanish and Chinese phrases where they didn't fit. I read many other books in the three weeks it took me to finish this one -- and put a few away in the middle because they weren't worth finishing. This one was worth finishing. I love the intercultural themes and this one fit in with books of Timothy Hallman, ...more

Entertaining story revolving around cross-cultural business dealings. An American business man is brought in the turn around a struggling housing development in Shanghai. In additional to the inevitable misunderstandings when American and Chinese businessmen work together, there is a corrupt Chinese gangster/underworld kingpin out to undermine the development and take it over for himself. I found the cultural aspects a lot more interesting than the gangster story line, which didn't seem to flow ...more

I won this in a goodreads giveaway. This is a very unique and interesting story. I very much enjoyed getting to know the characters and experiencing their story. I was pleasantly surprised by the writing style of this book. I would definitely be interested in reading more by this author and finding out what happens next in the life of Kip Duchene.

Dark Horse kept me swiping the screen. A well-paced story and real characters in an amazing setting. I felt I learned a lot about China without any sense of 'being taught'. Great job, Mr. Sorensen.
