W.o.w. If a book deserves a 5* rating it's this one! Smiles' world building is fantastic, I was drawn in from the word go and devoured the book in my free time. Foreseen shows the process undertaken by Kinzi, our main protagonist, and her adapting to becoming a part of the Adept community. Adept's are a group of people that can manipulate the thoughts of those around them for the 'greater good'. All is not what it seems at the Rothston institute, and suspicious things begin to happen around them.

I loved this book. Absolutely loved it and cannot be thankful enough to Terri-Lynne Smiles for allowing me to read and review it. Kinzi is a feisty yet shy female figure with very real flaws and positive aspects. She suffers from panic and anxiety when in crowds - something I can entirely relate to - which plays a strong aspect within the novel. Her fight against this, against her own developing adept skills as well as her fight for the greater good throughout the novel creates a very likeable character, someone I entirely empathised with.

The relationship which develops between a Physics Major, Greg, is slightly cliché but I loved it! Greg is a womanising, rich, 'jock' type figure with one unexpected aspect - he is incredibly intelligent. Their relationship begins to develop as Greg seeks her out in order to become partners for a class project. From this, the friendship morphs into something much deeper and meaningful. Smiles' develops the relationship with its trials and tribulations stunningly and I found myself hoping that everything would work out for them.

Along with the heroes and heroines, every novel must have a villain. This novel's villain forms in the shape of the figure Rex. Upon his introduction questions begin arising within the novel. Are the characters acting on their own accord or are they being influenced? Is Kinzie influencing Greg's emotions towards her? All of these questions and many more had me reading on eagerly to see how everything developed. Rex is the perfect villain. He is detestable, egotistical and provides one of the biggest turns within the novel.

This novel was truly amazing and I cannot wait for the next one. The world building was strong, the characters were sound and realistic - despite the paranormal/ sci-fi elements - they were people I could sympathise with. Smiles' is an intelligent and talented writer with many scientific references (my personal favourite was the Schroedinger's cat joke!) so bring on the next novel!(less)

And I was very pleasantly surprised by this book.
The premise of the story is not something I would usually read. A girl finds out she has the ability to see/sense things (and people) on quantum level and then manipulate them - Like interfere and make people decide to do something different from what would seem the obvious choice for them. Really I'm not at all science-y enough to understand any of this. How unlikely is this in real life? Cause I kind of felt like I do with the wizard powers (and world) in Harry Potter: This might exist. And that right there is what gets this book it's first point with me: It's made this - probably unlikely? - premise of adept people seem quite likely to me. I'm convinced.

Secondly: The writing wasn't bad. There wasn't to many typos thrown around to distract the reader. (Major pet peeve of mine. Major.) There was some variation in the language, there were funny points in the dialogue. (I actually quite liked the dialogues between Greg and Kinzie.)The pacing of the story was fine. The build up to the climax at Grand Central Station worked. The characters (for the most part) were believable - maybe especially Greg and Kinzie. And there weren't any major inconsistencies. There was more focus on the plot story line than on the love story between Kinzie and Greg. The love story developed nicely as an addition to the main story revolving the Rothston Institute. 2, 3, 4 points

Overall the story was a quick and easy read - And that's meant as a positive thing. It didn't blow me away, but one doesn't have to be blown away for it to be a nice read. It was engaging. I wanted to keep reading. I wanted to know how it turned out. How far Rex would get with his plans (to take over the world?;)). And I was involved enough with the characters to be annoyed when Greg didn't go to Kinzie, when she texted him that she needed him - But at the same time I felt with Greg and his frustrations about the situation. And I liked the fact that Kinzie didn't have everything figured out in regards to how she was going to handle combining Greg and college with Rothston. It all felt genuine. 5 points [not to be confused with star-ratings:)]

I would say that this is a pretty well executed debut novel in the NA Fantasy/Sci-fi genre. And I would recommend this to NA-readers (and maybe especially ones who're looking for a little more of a story line other than "bad boy meets good girl, ..."), and fantasy and sci-fi readers. And anyone else looking for an entertaining read.

This is to be the first in a series. Honestly I liked the open ending. I personally don't need a sequel. BUT I'm sure that there will be many readers out there who would be interested in knowing that happened to the people who got away. (I like to just let my mind wander ... (They got away and are going to take down the Institute and the rest of the world with their evil ways;))(less)

This book was really good. I liked Kinzie from the start. She was a strong, witty heroine, but with a crippling fear of crowds. I liked the contrast that created, although sometimes the fear really did annoy me, because it kept her from doing things to help herself. Other than that, I really liked her. As for Greg, he was a nice love interest. I loved his intelligence, but the whole playboy hero is a bit stereotypical. Of course, we see that he is way more than that, and he's brave, sweet, and loyal, but I am a bit weary of all the playboys in New Adult. That being said, I grew to really like him when he stood up to Kinzie, and later helped in the climax of the story. I thought that was so unique and amazing, that it really does cancel out the whole playboy issue.

As for the other characters in this book, I thought Mel was amazing. She was sort of like a female Dumbledore, although she was obviously different. I loved her strength, and her concern that the Institute did the right things. Then, there was Rex. He has to be one of the most evil and arrogant villains I've read about in some time. I hated him almost instantly, and that hate only grew. Therefore, I give the author lots of credit for being able to write both wonderful and horrible characters.

As for the plot of the story, I thought it was really interesting. The whole boarding school issue isn't unique, but I think the kind of school that it is is pretty original. I loved how Kinzie went there, as a college student. I thought that was a wonderful twist, and watching her learn and train were some of my favorite parts.
Of course, there is so much more to this story. There's intrigue, betrayal, love, and fighting. It all blended into a great story that I flew through in one day. So needless to say, I highly recommend reading this if you love New Adult, and especially paranormal/Sci-Fi New Adult. (less)

I have to be brutally honest. I had a hard time getting into this book... at first. The pace and story line just didn't hold me, but I kept picking it back up because I HAD to do the review.

It's not that most people would consider it bad, and nobody actually had sex in the book, but there were lots of crude references to sex. Honestly if you are a sci-fi fan, urban fantasy fan or just someone looking for a good read. Pick this book up right now. This. Book. Is. Excellent. It has a solid intriguing plot with well thought out characters who maintain believable relationships. It is absolutely wonderful to see the seer amount of character development coming from every member of the cast big or small. It has been a long time since I've enjoyed a book as much as I enjoyed this one.

The plot develops slowly, enticing you into the world that Terri-Lynne Smiles has created. Reading it I could tell just how much thought went into creating it -- she thought of the social, and economical impact 'adepts', people who can read all the possible futures and influence which one they want to happen, would have on a modern society. In the beginning the story isn't necessarily fast-paced but it is griping and I found myself unable to put the book down.

Did I mention that the characters that make up the cast are fantastic? Did I -- because I don't think I can stress that enough. I loved the main characters of Kinzie and Greg and their relationship with each other. The friendship and romance between the two of them unfolds perfectly and at such a believable pace that you can't help but root for them. The 'bad guys'? I loved to hate them! They were so well done and despicable that at some points I wanted to shout 'No' at the book! One part in particular that stands out in my mind is when Rex influences one of Greg's friends to swallow a cue ball. The colourful supporting cast is amazing as well and have meaningful characters interactions with each other and the main characters -- they aren't just a cardboard backdrop.

What I like best about the books is that you are given all the clue to try and figure out the plot along with the characters. So as you go through the book, the connections that you start to make (sometime before the characters do) only add to the incredible suspense that this book already generates. Nearing the end of the book I swear my heart was in my throat the entire time as I worked my way to the books finish -- not knowing how things were going to end up.

In short. Read this book. It's intriguing. Smart -- makes you think. Awesome characters. Well thought out plot. Fantastic story. I'll be recommending this one for awhile! Can't wait to read the next one in the series!

I struggled with what to rate this book. I think I would really give it 2.5 stars. I received this book for an honest review and if I hadn't I am not sure I would have finished it. The writing was distractingly descriptive - I would start to get into the story and then there would be a descriptive sentence that would just pull me right out of it and make me stop and say what? Not sure why it bothered me so much. I mean most authors I do not actively notice when they describe things, but for some reason when this author did it just pulled me out of the story. Kind of like cheesy descriptive or something. I cannot quite figure out what exactly it was that bothered me.

Okay so enough on the writing - **Note some spoilers ahead** I did start to get into the story and was enjoying it, though I really thought Kinzie was annoying as well. She is just so stupid! I hate when the main girl is just....she just cannot see what she should know already and is obvious. Take when Curtis tries to tell her Rex is behind Mel leaving and other bad stuff. What does Kinzie say? No way! Not possible even though I know Rex is a horrible horrible person and has great power and everyone loves him and the whole freakin book is about people influencing other people to do what they want them to, no way could Rex be influencing people. Really? Really. I mean that is the whole point of the secret society you are a part of! You saw what Rex does to people! But no way could he do something that evil...oh wait he already has in your presence! It is like come on! She is supposed to be smart and distrusting, yet she instantly trusts all these horrible people and they cannot possibly be bad? And cannot figure out things that are right in front of her face! Okay.

The only characters I really liked was Greg (and I guess Curtis was alright). I understood Greg and he was the one to stand up to Kinzie when she started to change and be just like Rex. He said when he found out about Kinzie and everyone and what they could do that such power in anyone's hands is dangerous - even someone good like Kinzie. Which turns out to be true in the story as Kinzie starts becoming just like Rex. Greg is the only one who stands up for what is right and he was just a good character. I know Kinzie comes around by the end, but man. When the second book comes out I might read it just to see what happens - I mean I enjoyed the general story and if it were out now I would probably go ahead and read it just to find out what happens. Yet, when it comes right down to it, it really deals with clairvoyance and telepathic/telekinetic powers. So take your pick: sci-fi or paranormal fantasy/romance? Since I've been a hard sci-fi fan for years, I'm going to file this one in my book categories as paranormal romance.

The story is about a group of people with special mental powers. The call themselves "adept." In the US, the 'adept' are managed by the "Seven" who operate out of the Rothston institution. Their goal is to manipulate world events for the "good" of mankind (shady, huh?). Kinzie discovers that she is adept as an older kid (18) which is odd for most. She is then shuffled around to the Rothston institute to learn about adepts and her own powers.

Pros: The characterization was good with the main characters, and even though the villains were flat, they were still creepy! Greg was the best character, having the most range and being the most believable. Kinzie was ok, but she made some weird decisions that didn't really fit where her character was going at the beginning. Since we saw those scenes through Greg's eyes, they were even more strange. I assumed she was trying to drive him away and faking stuff, but no. It was just out of character.

My biggest pro with this book, is the exploration of the theme who decides what's good for mankind? We see several instances of this in the book. Kinzie like most naive college students thinks she can change the world, and worse, she knows what's best for it. Because of this the Rothston institute seduces her into believing that they do have the answers. She finds herself justifying some horrific actions because of this, bringing up the theme. My idea for what is good for all is not the same as everyone else's and I like how the book dealt with that.

Cons: There really aren't a lot of cons I didn't already mention above. The weird characterization issues with Kinzie are about it. I wanted her to be a little stronger. She is obviously much more 'adept' then most of the others having very strong powers. She needed to use those when it would help her. I wanted to know more of why Greg's touch helped her clarify her ability. Mainly I just thought that the superpowers of the Rothston crowd were too iffy. When it suited the scene, they were unstoppable, when it didn't they were easily overcome. I just think that the presentation of the powers should be more consistent, and the characters should be able to see/feel when they are being manipulated. The whole thing with Mel was a bit obvious and I don't know why no one picked up on it!

Overall, this was a decent and original read. It's a good starter sci-fi for YA readers to make the transition from Paranormal romance. Or if you enjoy paranormal romance, you'll enjoy this tale. I'd recommend it to the YA PR and Sci-fi crowd.

"A strong plot-line coupled with a couple interesting twists" is the best way that I can begin to describe this awesome book. Review: In receiving a copy from Foreseen, I hadn’t quite known what to expect and after beginning, I was a bit worried I would not be able to even read the first fifty pages let alone finish the novel. The novel started off rather boring and remained so for the first forty pages or so then gradually built up to an interesting enough plot that I decided to stick with the book, curious as to where the author would take the story. Truth be told, even though the book fell somewhere between The Darkest Powers Trilogy by Kelley Armstrong and the movie Push, I was surprised by how much I came to actually like a great deal of the book and characters.

Kinzie is shy, quiet, very much a tomboy and doesn’t really have a lot of friends. She spends more time with her head in a book and handling scientific projects than people. I could relate to Kinzie since growing up (and even now) I was VERY shy and just as much of a tomboy as Kinzie’s character. But she is also honest and incredibly stubborn. I didn’t fully like Kinzie’s character though. She is too gullible and is easily manipulated. She always talks about her distrust of people but she instantly trusts the Seven, the leaders of the Rothston Institute, without really questioning them until it’s too late and she has to be rescued. She also made incredibly stupid decisions with her new found adept gifts when she knew better!

Greg was my favorite character out of the entire novel. I hadn’t expected to really like him at all since he starts off as an ego-centric playboy who depends on his naturally born good looks and family money to impress people. He matures and grows throughout the book as he develops a friendship with Kinzie which transforms into a romantic relationship. I liked how realistic his character was portrayed and how much Greg is changed by his love for Kinzie. He learns to respect women better and to focus on building a life outside of his family’s money.

The Seven are the leaders at Rothston and frankly, the only likeable one out of the bunch was Melvina. She was kind and caring whereas the rest where just evil, egotistical, power hungry maniacs. Rex was the main villain of the book and he was as pompous as the Seven and equally annoying which I supposed worked for the role he played.

There are a few secondary characters both within Kinzie and Greg’s life. Sasha was Kinzine’s roommate and only friend (until Greg). She was the most annoying character out of the bunch. I had been hoping she wouldn’t survive to see the end of Foreseen so I wouldn’t have to deal with in the second novel. Curtis was sweet and cute. Greg’s roommates, Boomer and Pete, were hilarious and guy-guys.

The romance between Greg and Kinzie developed pretty well. They started off as awkward friends, learning to feel comfortable around each other as they worked on a school project. They gradually grow into a friendship and learn to trust each other. I liked when Greg realizes his feelings for Kinzie have grown since they come as such a shock to him. I did get annoyed with how often Kinzie needed to be cuddled by Greg to be made to feel better about herself. I also got frustrated with how much the author intertwined scientific jargon for Kinzine to describe how she felt for Greg. It didn’t mix well. It made Kinzie’s thoughts come off too analytical.

After the first 40 pages or so, the pacing to the novel begins to grow and gets better. The suspense is slow growing and not as strong considering Kinzie is rather dull and gullible but works well when Greg is narrating. The action scenes are pretty standard, nothing too surprising about them.

Foreseen was a pretty good debut novel and I do look forward to checking out what will be done in the second installment, Choices. I definitely want to see how Greg and Kinzie’s relationship develops and what will happen with the Seven at the Rothston Institute after how the book ended.

Science fiction fans will thoroughly enjoy this book!

I didn’t know what to expect going into this book. It turned out to be very different than what I had assumed was going to happen when I read the synopsis. Although I was a tad apprehensive, it quickly became one of those “just one more chapter” stories. I think this is largely due to the alternating perspectives between Kinzie and Greg. In the beginning I was very much invested in Greg’s point of view but near the end I was looking forward to Kinzie’s. Either way, I couldn’t put it down until my eyes bleared in the wee hours of the morning.

After a strange occurrence during her lab, Kinzie is told that she is an adept, a person that can see and manipulate the future and the world around her. By controlling certain aspects around her, she can influence the decisions that people make in order to change the possible outcomes. Although she improves her abilities in great strides at Rothston, a company for adepts that claim they work for the good of others, it catches unwanted attention of those who would harm her to get their way. While she works for Rothston, she finds that all might not be what it seems.

I had expected this to be a lot more YA and paranormal but it was surprisingly so much more than that. The writing was mature, the story was solid and the characters were well made. Kinzie and Greg were typical YA characters put in typical positions but it did not feel like it was rehashed and overused. I loved the little things that added to these characters such as Kinzie’s fear of crowds (which actually plays into the story and isn’t just a way to make her seem more than a cardboard cut out) and Greg being a physics major despite his jock like attitude. I appreciated that Kinzie’s abilities are explained differently than most other books where they say that it’s just how it works. Physics played a big role in explaining the rules of the books and I admired that the adepts' abilities stayed within the rules that were created for the story.

What also impressed me was the fact that I felt the danger in the book. I’ve read many books in which the characters keep speaking of an imminent threat with no real sense of danger and without spoiling anything, that was not the case in Foreseen.

What Smiles did very well was stretch certain plot lines just the right amount to keep me engaged. Everything was balanced. Smiles didn’t linger too long with Kinzie’s discovery of her powers and headed straight into what sort of issues would arise with such power. Fortunately the romance between Greg and Kinzie was fleshed out well as this could usually make or break a book for me. It did not seem rushed and it did not threaten to take over the rest of the story and minimize Kinzie’s (and Greg’s) issues with her abilities.

I was very much impressed by the issues that Smiles brought up early in the game by making Kinzie discover how power can change those who wield them and influence others around them for better or for worse (usually for worse).

There were some moments near the end when I felt that Kinzie might have acted a bit out of character but that did not ruin the book for me. Another thing that disappointing me was how obviously evil the bad guys were. There was not real mystery in the who or why of the conflict but at least that was covered by the well written mystery of how. I also wished that her parentage was discussed more but I have a feeling that Smiles is saving that for the next installment.
Overall 4 out of 5 stars and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

This book was better than I thought it would be. It started out slow but as the story went on I was so caught up in it that I had to see where it went. Kinzie was this shy girl who was afraid of crowds. She started college ans was around these people who she never would have hung out with on her own. Let me start by saying, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and eagerly waiting for the sequel to be released (when)(when)?? I loved the concept and the way it was executed and the plot development.. All the characters looked realistic and believable.. loved the way friendship developed between the lead roles and the way it turned into "Love", nothing fairy tale'ish here.. However, I must admit it was hard for me to handle the first couple of pages, it sort of dragged and dragged forever, but once the plot was set-in, it was a fun read or I must say I was anxious as to what would happen to the people I had grown to sympathize with.. I was worried about the turn of events and was holding my breath all the way until everything was sort of, 'set alright!' And let me say that the antagonist here, was a super villian and I sort of liked that his role made the plot much more difficult to digest.. and that behind the scene antagonist was predictable from the beginning though!

And to think of -ves, the first part of the book dragged unnecessarily and I somehow felt did not add to the plot. Some of the parts were predictable like what Kinzie's headache would conclude to or about Mel's Alzheimer's attack etc etc.. Greg's touch making Kinzie all the more powerful sounded lil cheesy and i hope that the author comes up with a beautiful explanation for that in the sequels. Also, the way Kinzie always thinks of his beauty even in the midst of all the adversities was way too immature even though she was somewhere around 20 now,that just did not suit her age.. I understand she is 'In Love' , yet the weight of the situation dangling on their head should have made her think more about the other things... and then there is this one, that the characters tend to remember their powers when in impossible situations only and I just couldn't figure out why they hadn't used it in the first place.. And then the Cover, it was plain boring :(

All in all, a great read and a beautiful/original concept.. I would definitely recommend this to all Sci-Fi fans and to that matter I believe even the Non-Sci-Fi fans would enjoy this :p ..only that the person should have the patience to get thru the first few pages.. and to conclude I would definitely read it a second time ;)

What I liked:

--I have never taken a physics class in my life and am not wired to understand the sciences very well, but Terri-Lynne's writing made some of the jargon at least borderline understandable for me. I have no idea about whether half the things she is talking about are on the level or not, but they sound like it and that was good enough for me.
--There was a great deal of time devoted to moral and philosophical issues related to the powers that Kinzie and the other adepts wield, which is something I can appreciate. It makes this sci-fi thriller as much about the people as it is about their powers, and that is essential to good storytelling.
--Rex Brolie is absolute evil. You yearn for him to get his and loathe everything he says and does. There is no denying he is an enemy most foul almost from the start, and he proves there is nothing he won't do in order to achieve his nefarious ends, so kudos for making it clear what he is all about (even if he has most of the Rothston Institute fooled). Brolie is a an awful villain in a very good way.
--The way Kinzie's biggest fear is revealed and developed throughout the story. Absolutely FANTASTIC bit.

What I didn't like:

--Greg is not a very sympathetic character, so it is hard to like him all that much. What I mean is that his character is not a very likable one given the way he acts towards Kinzie half the time, the way he acts towards women in general and some of the choices he makes. This makes his interactions with Kinzie odd throughout most of the book and it makes it hard for me to understand why Kinzie develops much of a connection with him. I get that he matures along the way and redeems himself somewhat as he grows up, but for too much of the novel he's not very likable as main characters go. Their relationship feels like a very forced aspect of the story and it just didn't quite resonate with me.
--The alternating points of view from one chapter to the next didn't work for me, largely because Kinzie is the crux of this story and is, frankly, the more interesting character. Telling the story from her perspective would have made the story more cohesive, as there are a number of jumpy transitions that are pretty abrupt and it disrupts the fluidity of the novel.
--This book could definitely have used an editor. There are a number of missing words, incorrectly used words, wrong words and punctuation issues which are very distracting. This problem stopped me in my tracks frequently, which is a shame because I did enjoy this book.

As I said before, this is a solid read. The premise is intriguing and, for the most part, executed well enough to keep you invested in the story and guessing as to what is coming next. I'll be curious to see what the next book in the series has in store.

The concepts of Adepts held my attention all the way through as well as the love story between the two main characters Kinzie and Greg. I wasn’t expecting to find a romance based on the blurb and that fact that this is a science fiction book. The romance in and of itself is very sweet and typical of YA and wouldn’t appeal to me under normal conditions. Kinzie is a shy, average-looking college student. She is exceptionally smart and has a great relationship with her adopted father but she suffers from debilitating anxiety when in a crowd. Greg is a partying jock type, who also happens to be very intelligent and majoring in physics. I immediately liked both of them and experiencing the story through their eyes adds much to the telling of the story and creating characters with a lot of depth. Sometimes the changing of POVs was a little awkward, it felt like there were chunks of story edited out and the author explained it away with “it has been 3 weeks since… “, but the story does move at a fast pace because of it.

What I really enjoyed was the dark direction the plot and some of the characters. The Rothston’s Institute is made up of people called Adepts who can see the world in a unique way that lets them manipulate people’s thought processes, and in special cases teleport objects. The science Terri-Lynne came up with for how this is done is fascinating and very believable. She didn't give these people super powers; there are limitations with the laws of physics and human will that come into play. Now imagine if some of these people decide to use their abilities to influence world politics or a personal vendetta. Kinzie discovers not only is she an Adept, but she is an unusual one. Adepts keep their existence a secret from the commons, normal people, and Kinzie struggles with issues of keeping the two worlds separate, getting caught up in her own abilities, and the morality of using them. This is where having the story told from the POV of Kenzie and Greg adds to the story. We get to see how Adepts view commons and how commons would view Adepts if they knew about them.

There are quite a few surprising twists, and the fast pace action and characters kept me glued to my e-reader. The ending definitely leaves a lot of questions that need to be answered about Kinzie’s past and the future of Adepts so I am looking forward to the next book. If you are looking for something a little different with excellent storytelling and writing give this one a try.

I liked this book. It was fairly easy to read. The story seemed well developed and the characters were generally well developed. I love how Kinzie is a person. I also love how Greg can be an asshole, but struggles with understanding his feelings for Kinzie.

I wasn't sure what I would think of this book, but I really ended up enjoying it. I loved that it was told by two characters, it gave you an interesting perspective on the story. At first the book was a little slower than I would normally like, but it quickly sucked me in completely and got much more exciting.
