It should have been a night to remember, but Maura Isles can't recall a thing.

Maura is at a party. A handsome man approaches. He's charming and sophisticated. She flirts and drinks champagne. And then nothing. Total blackness. Nothing, that is, apart from these two facts: a man is dead and her address is found in his pocket . . .

Short story or full length novel, Gerritsen's books are always excellent. I wish this could have been longer! Wonderful!

A short story featuring Rizzoli & Isles.

The John Doe in this case is a murder victim found dressed in a tuxedo with multiple stab wounds. The chief suspect is Maura Isles herself.

While attending a museum fundraiser, she'd met an attractive man who fetched her a refill on her champagne. Shortly after that, she began to feel hot and dizzy. The next thing she remembers is waking up in her home lying on the couch with a monster headache and the doorbell ringing.

It's Jane Rizzoli announcing the f...more

Dr. Maura Isles is bored. Attending a charity function, the evening takes an almost romantic turn when she engages with a handsome man in a tuxedo. It seems that the bubbles from the champagne is not the only thing taking effect.

Sunday morning and Dr. Isles awakes on her sofa - still fully dressed in the evening silk gown she wore the previous night; but she can't remember getting there. She feels dizzy and has a headache. As she scrambles around making sure she hasn't been robbed, a knock at th...more

John Doe is an ebook short. It tells a story about how Dr. Maura Isles came to be the prime suspect in a murder investigation.

It all begins a beautiful night in Boston when Dr. Isles attends a cocktail party at the Museum of Science. She doesn’t really want to be there, but since she’s in the museum’s committee and the event is a benefit, she has no choice.

She’s bored at first but things seem to get better when she’s approached by a handsome man called Eli Kilgour, who also happens to be a gener...more

Gerritsen can weave a complex tale any time she likes! Whether it’s a normal length novel, or a short story, as this one is, the grit and tension will pull you in every time.

Dr Maura Isles is at a glitzy, champagne filled fund raiser at the Museum of Science, she is bored, her 6” heels are killing her, and she can’t wait to go home and take them off. Suddenly her spirits lift, as she is approached by a handsome young man in a tuxedo…the night starts to look brighter. When he brings her more cham...more

Are you a fan of the hit TV Show Rizzoli and Isles ? The show starring the best two females in their profession - we have Boston Detective Jane Rizzoli and her best friend ME Dr. Maura Isles. If you are looking for a quick mystery fix, then this is the book for you as it takes us into the night of Maura Isles - one minute she is admiring the bones of a TRex at a museum gala and the next she is waking up on her couch still in last night's clothes. What happened between the gala and her getting h...more

In Tess Gerritsen’s short story, John Doe, Maura Isles finds herself drawn to a wealthy, handsome man and engages in some harmless flirting…at least she thought it was harmless… What I enjoyed most about this latest short story was how Ms. Gerritsen really zeroed in on Maura and put her in a situation I was honestly surprised to see her in…and surprised in a good way. Rarely do we get to see Maura like she was when she met this mystery man, the way she flirted with him…she wasn’t the same cautio...more

A Quick Note (which is also a spoiler, sorry)

(view spoiler)[This short story deals with rape and the consequences of it. If rape is a trigger for you then maybe don't pick this up (hide spoiler)]

Why did I read this?

I read this as a nice, quick way to finish off the entire Rizzoli and Isles series. I kinda think maybe I should've read this BEFORE Last To Die though. I didn't know that when I started it though but never mind.

What did I think of this book?

I think that it's an entertaining, short re...more

A Rizzoli and Isles short story - 3.5 stars. Maura Isles goes to a charity cocktail party and meets an attractive man - then she wakes up in the morning on her couch with no memory of the rest of the night. Jane Rizzoli is investigating a murder - the man turns out to be the same one Maura left the party with. It turns out that the "victim" is the suspect in several prior rape cases -women were drugged at parties then woke up in their homes with no memories of the events.

This short story is some...more

When Maura Isles meets a handsome man at a fundraiser, she welcomes a bit of harmless flirtation. Or that’s what she thinks. The next day she wakes up on her couch with no memory of how she got there. Had she really drunk that much? When Rizzoli turns up at her door with questions, Maura starts to worry. A dead man has been found in the park and he has her business card.

John Doe is a digital short in Tess Gerritsen's Rizzoli and Isles series. I’m not sure the plot suited itself to a shorter form...more

I was quite happy to discover that I still had 2 short stories to go through while I wait for Gerritsen's next full length novel to come out. The first one I found was this one - John Doe - and I am very happy to report that I really enjoyed it and thought Gerritsen was almost as good in a short format as she is in a long one. Almost, because I would rather have more of Rizzoli & Isles.

The story apparently starts shortly after Isles’ testimony sends a cop to prison. Since that was such a big...more

Gerritsen weaves a tremendous story into such a short space. I could not put it down from beginning to end and I was so pleased to see this short story appear out of nowhere. It compresses a full length Rizzoli and Isles book (or show) into an easily digestible tale that has you wondering from beginning to end.

When the personal info of Dr. Isles ends up on a dead man, everyone looks to the doctor to see if she could be behind the murder. With the help of her friend, Jane Rizzoli, Isles sets abou...more

John Doe is a short story in the Rizzoli and Isles series by popular American author, Tess Gerritsen. When Maura Isles awakens fully dressed on her sofa the morning after a museum benefit evening, and no memory of how she got home, she realises something is wrong. When Jane Rizzoli comes to her door with news that a murder victim had her card with her home address on it in his pocket, they realise they have a major problem. This is a fast paced and exciting, if small, dose of Rizzoli and Isles a...more

The book starts off with a whole bucketful of promise. The writing is spectacular. It's good to see Rizzoli & Isles after a long time.
But all that said, Tess Gerritsen should not really go into the short story business. The suspense builds up slowly and enticingly only to come to an abrupt end - and the inertia of the suspense only makes the reader jolt rudely at the stop.
It's sadly anti-climatic.
One tiny thing though - this short story can be a precursor to the changes that are...more

Another great read from Tess Gerritsen. Only a very short story but a very intriguing & keeps you on the edge of ur seat. I enjoy a short story after reading a full on book with 40 or more chapters its like time out. This is only the 2nd novel of Tess Gerritsen's that I've read & i'am hooked although I don't like the TV series the characters are nothing like they r in the books so i'll be sticking with these great reads!!!

I'm more often than not frustrated by these "stories" by people who usually write novels dealing with characters with whom I'm invested, but in this case it seemed to me to be the perfect length. (And it wasn't so long that I had to sort out the differences between the TV and book universes of the characters.)

While this was a library copy, it would have worth buying (assuming a reasonable price that is).

In this day in age and all the popularity of CSI shows I doubt any sane women out there still lets a complete stranger get them a drink unsupervised. All in all this was a short story made specifically to compete in the fast dominating e-reading market. Classic 'who dun it' mystery with one of the main characters as the prime suspect when a John Doe is found stabbed to death with her business card and address found in his pockets.

At a fundraiser, Maura meets a charming man. She accepts a champagne refill and an offer of dessert at a local restaurant. As they are leaving, Maura starts feeling very dizzy. She comes to on her couch and remembers nothing after leaving the fundraiser. Jane arrives and informs Maura that her male friend was found dead in a local park and his car is right outside Maura's place, making her the #1 suspect.
Melissa Watson
Maura wakes up and can't remember anything from the night before. She thinks she may have been raped and goes to the ER. Suspicions arise when the man she had met is found dead. Rizzoli searches for his killer and learns the dead man was a predator that drugged women and left them for another man to rape. Their victims seek revenge. It was a good short mystery.

It's difficult to like the short stories as much when you are used to full-length novels that feature the same characters. I enjoyed the direction of the plot and the twist at the end. As with her other Rizzoli and Isles novella, Freaks, I felt that this story could have been developed into a full-length novel, which would have made it even more enjoyable.

Teasing little short story to tide us over until the newest novel is released here soon. It was too quick, and too neat; almost a little superficial. But what can you expect when its only 40 pages? Still nice to read a little of Jane & Maura before the next novel comes out.

Queen of the dead is a very fitting moniker for Maura. Whenever she met someone and started flirting with them, the next day or two, they would turn out dead. Except for Daniel of course. An exciting and action-packed quickread.

I needed a little Rizzles fix after the season finale and before the release of the next book.

This was just long enough for a 20 minute subway ride, the story seemed a little rushed but the end twist was worth it.
Vivienne
Certainly more substantial than 'Freaks', with a compelling story about Maura Isles encounter with a seemingly charming bloke.

Again, was a sweet little read as part of my read-a-thon event.

Just so-so. This is just an okay story, reveals no new aspects to R&I. That's pretty much all a short st story in a series can do, unless it's a really new story concept which this is not.
Melissa
Short and sweet. I love all of the Rizzoli & Isles books, but this was my first short story about them. I enjoyed the fast-paced plot line that answered my questions quickly.
Carolyn
A little too short to give more than 3 stars, but a great read for fans anyway.

Has got me out of my reading funk and now going on to the next one in the series.

A fun short story just as good as the full length books by Tess Geritsen. Really enjoyed it even though it was easy to guess who the killer was.

A very good Rizzoli and Isles short story, a small stop-gap until her 10th Rizzoli and Isles novel, The Last To Die is released at the end of August. I for one can't wait......
Victoria Shepherd
Rizzoli and Iles' characters have morphed into their onscreen counterparts in this TV episode os a short story, to disappointing effect.
