Heidi Cullinan and Marie Sexton are fabulous authors in their own right, but the culmination of their talents in this book have notched it up a whole new level! Amazing... could not put it down until finished! 4.25 stars
I love my dark novels and I love plenty of smut and angst! But, you know what… Sometimes you just need a comfort read and Second Hand delivers just that. Don’t get me wrong, the sex is still HAWT and tummy tinglingley good, but this is a slow burner and our two MC’s, although dra...more

The story is not without flaws. I do have itsy bitsy complaints. But when it counts, it is perfect read for what I need at the moment (yes -- rating can change in different situation :p). Because if the question is do I like this? My answer is without a doubt, yes, I am in love with it. I am gladly rounding up the rating even with the point deductions.

El was all right except for a kind of unappealing mini-character-arc toward the end, but I found Paul's naiveté to be trying after a while. He's thirty, or almost, but he acted more like a twenty-two year old. It was frankly past time for him to start growing up. Their relationship progressed in a standard fashion, but I couldn't quite figure out what El saw in Paul, especially at first. Did he just like the innocent demeanor? The text made it explicit that Paul wasn't El's type physically, and...more

I loved Second Hand! It was so much better than the first book in the series, Where Nerves End. Oh, and it's not really a series, the characters are all new, and even the authors(!) are different, the only connecting point is the setting, Tucker Springs.
Paul was cute and clueless :) El's family was a mess, but they were amusing and El himself was also very amusing - the things he did to see Paul were simply hilarious ("one item per day" rule). And they (El) even ended up with a dog. :D

Imagine this scene on roller skates ...thats only a snippet of the good stuff in this book~that is "Paul and El and they are sweet and delicious~"

I have to do a One-Quote Review for this because anything longer would be nauseatingly sycophantic.
So, Heidi and Marie, just go ahead and push all my buttons, and THEN reach in and pull my guts out. You both seem to be good at that sort of thing.
ALSO: Hurry the hell up with your next books, so I can fling myself on the altar of your brilliance ALL OVER AGAIN.
I guess that last bit crossed the “sycophant” line, huh? Oh,...more

“I just want to be the first choice for someone for once. Just once.”

This was really, really good. More of a 4.5 stars for me. The only thing missing for a full 5 was the sobbing that I like in a "makes my chest ache" book. The sex was freaking hawt! Dayum! Well, when they finally got around to it. Definately a build up, sexual tension type book. I liked it better than #1 and it could definately stand alone. Other than location, there were no other connections. El was in the first book because he owned the pawn shop but that was the only connection that I could s...more
3.5 Rounded up because it left me in a good place.
Generally sweet, and from my perspective, more enjoyable than Dirty Laundry and Covet Thy Neighbor, even with my excitement and waiting for the latter.
Paul was clueless and gullible. That made him endearing to a point, but I pitied him and couldn't really find him sexy.
El's fit about the ring was exasperating.
I half expected the fire to be (view spoiler).

Ohhhh, I had fun reading this book! I haven't giggled maniacally on the NY subway (where nobody cares cuz there's always someone crazier than you) like this in forever! But this book had me laughing and smiling and sighing (mostly in wonderment at the daftness that is Paul at times) and feeling sad at times, a little empathetic over El's self-imposed loneliness, and mystified that, despite the switch between first and third person p.o.v between characters and the dual authorship, this book kept...more
MM romance between a chain-smoking, pawn shop owner (El) and Paul, a "straight" receptionist for the local vet.
Paul was delightfully naive….yet still this story dragged on for me.
In my humble opinion, too much of the book was devoted to El's family - I did not connect with El's sister or his mother and could not understand why they were featuring so heavily. I also could not help feeling like their story line was unnecessarily lengthening the book.

I have mixed feelings about this one. This would have been a perfectly cute story had I not read Promises, Double Blind and A to Z. Because while Paul is a less clueless version of Zach, El is practically Randy's twin. And their story reminded me of Matt&Jared's. I don't know how I feel about that; at times it was almost like "Hey, I know these guys" and it was hard not to feel a little cheated to be honest. Their story was sweet though and it seems like the authors worked well together. May...more
The switching between 1st- and 3rd-person narrative voice took a bit to get used to, but overall this was an enjoyable read. Paul's adorableness (and cluelessness) might grate on the nerves of some, but it was endearing to me. I liked El and his wacky family. And, lastly, I'm about ready to wake up hubby so we can go the pound to find our Mojo.
Awwww. This was so sweet my teeth ache. Paul was one of those lovely characters who was perpetually bemused by life. El on the other hand was a hardened cynic who hid his marshmallow heart with aloofness. Together they were gorgeous. Any man who carries his dog around in a baby carrier is too cute for words.
This is a lovely sequel. At first I was mildly disappointed it wasn't Seth's story (I was in the mood for some hot twinky meets tattooed bad boy action) but that feeling was quickly replaced...more

As some of you may know, the three of us were lucky enough to be able to attend the Romantic Times Convention last week. We had an amazing time and will hopefully post about it here soon. The publishers, authors and organizers of the convention were humbling in their generosity. But the thing that stood out for me the most…the thing that started out our long weekend with a bang…was the book that I found in my RT tote. The tote that is given to ALL attendees once they pick up their badge. I opene...more
Fun and sweet. Very little I did not like and even most of that was cleared up as being on purpose by the end, which made me unreasonably happy with relief.
It started out well with Paul endearing off the bat.
After coming to terms with that odd switch between first and third person, I really, really enjoyed El’s POV, probably even more than Paul’s (although that definitely had its moments as well). El’s just… funny and easygoing and keen. And despite appearances not really given to deceiving hims...more

Second Hand by Heidi Cullinan and Marie Sexton is the second book in the Tucker Springs series in which different authors write the romances between various gay men living in the fictional Colorado town of Tucker Springs. Other than the setting, another thematic similarity that unites the series is serious psychological or physical issues such as chronic pain (in the first Tucker Springs book) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (in the upcoming third book). In this book, one of the main character...more
Maybe I'm being mean by not giving this book five stars. It had a good story, great characters, a cute (non-insta-love) relationship. Shoot, it even had an adorable dog that didn't just show up for one scene then become a nonentity like so many other animals (and kids) in romances. I loved El's family dynamic and how true it felt (I have a family member that is a hoarder and have witnessed the fallout from it many times). Okay, maybe I should take away points for the two main women in the book b...more
Ooops. I see this is #2, I didn’t know that, but I didn’t feel lost and have been told you CAN read them as stand-alones. Anyway.
I had heard good things about Tucker Springs, and when on Valentine’s Riptide had this one half-off, I decided to snap it up (we won’t talk about the other things I bought that were not half-off ooops). It is absolutely adorable.
Paul is such a lost soul. He can not see his own worth, and I think sometimes is so caught up in his own head, he can’t see anything happenin...more

What a great book. This is a gentle, sexy comedy romance that oozes charm. The two main characters Paul and Emanuel - or El as he is known as - are both engaging and quirky and I loved that straight away there was an obvious chemistry between them, but in a different way to the usual instant attraction that normally occurs. Paul tugs at your heartstrings, there is a vulnerability about him and lack of confidence caused mainly because his girlfriend has left him in the lurch, not only emotionally...more
I recently finished reading "Second Hand," a collaboration between Heidi Cullinan and Marie Sexton.
This book is written in a sort of he said/he said format: alternating chapters from the viewpoints of each of the two protagonists. This is a common enough literary form, but what makes it unusual is that one set of chapters is told in the first person, and the other in the third person. Usually a book written in this format will either have both stories told in the first person, or both told in th...more

I absolutely adored Second Hand, a story about making choices, letting go of old fears, and learning to fly without a net. In a world of low expectations and always being second best, Paul “just wanted to be the first choice for someone for once, just once.” This story is told from Paul’s first person POV and Ed’s third person POV and their voices and perspectives are so different, and yet so similar, it was like a melody played with different instruments that blended perfectly.

I enjoyed this book, mostly because of El. Don’t get me wrong, I liked Paul, but he was such a dope in the beginning, completely oblivious to so much! As time went on, I learned to really like him, as he’s kind of adorable. It was really El that made the story though. He’s fun, smart, kind, and sexy. What more can you ask for?
The story overall was good, but started off a little slow. I do appreciate that the romance was slow building, thus sweeter, but it still seemed to drag just a tad. Once t...more

This was El and Paul's story...
Paul meets El when he is looking for a gift for his ex-girlfriend and El takes an instant liking to him. He's kind of goofy, spacy, a little lost most of the time and feels like a huge failure.
El thinks he's cute and interesting even if he is straight... then Paul starts to bring in kitchen gadgets to purge himself of the things that his exgirlfriend left behind so he can try to win a contest in his neighborhood for best yard.

How can you not love a book that makes you laugh out loud? Second Hand had several of those moments, which made it not only a sweet read but a fun one too. I love it when that happens.
Paul is a really sweet guy and beyond naive. That fact will probably bother a lot of readers, but I kind of found it endearing. I think it didn’t bother me so much because his naiveness was mostly because he had little or no self confidence. That self confidence was lacking in both his work life and his personal li...more

At First Sight: Paul Hannon isn't quite sure what to do now that his girlfriend of 7 years dumped him: he moved to Tucker Springs, Colorado because she wanted, signed a 3 year lease on a house he can't barely afford because she liked it and he's knee deep in debt because of all the crap Stacey asked him to buy her (including an engament ring that was above his pay grade).
Still, since her birthday is coming up, Paul figures he should get her a present in a last ditch effort to win her back. But...more

Cute, quick, and well-constructed, with two charming leads, full of humorous touches and even an adorable dog. It is hard to imagine a sweeter hero than Paul: his efforts to win the curb appeal contest, his obliviousness to Lorraine's flirting, his way with animals. El walking around with the dog in a carrier, and then worrying about exposing her to second hand smoke, was reason alone to read the book. The stuff with El's mom's hoarding was also very well-done--and fit well with overall themes....more
Paul is a young man who has been dumped by his girlfriend Stacey for a man with better prospects. Paul, sadly, is still hung up on her. El--Emmanuel Rozal--runs the pawn shop he inherited from his granddad and avoids all relationships because he sees all the failed relationships (but not the successful ones) all around him. El, by the way, is gay and out, and however mixed up his family is in other ways, it's just not an issue for them.

Marie Sexton lives in Colorado. She’s a fan of just about anything that involves muscular young men piling on top of each other. In particular, she loves the Denver Broncos and enjoys going to the games with her husband. Her imaginary friends often tag along. Marie has one daughter, two cats, and one dog, all of whom seem bent on destroying what remains of her sanity. She loves them anyway.
