So. A paranormal romance, Xander and Morgan’s story. Unlike other paranormals I’ve read, both of the pair are superhuman beings, not just one or the other (when I’ve read paranormal romances before, it was always the male who was supernatural).

Well, I’m not a huge reader of paranormals, but I like to read one every now and then, and this one was good. None of your werewolves or vampires, this pair belong to a tribe called the Ikati, a tribe of shifters who have coexisted uneasily with humankind through the ages. They’ve survived primarily because of their close bonds and secrecy. The trouble is, anyone who violates the rules is dealt with swiftly and harshly. On the brink of a brutal and humiliating execution, Morgan gets an unexpected reprieve. She has to go to Rome to hunt down the Expurgari, the enemies of the Ikati. She’s accompanied by an assassin, Xander and he is the nearest thing to a machine I’ve ever read about. Hard as iron and just as unfeeling. Should Morgan fail in her mission, she is to be swiftly eliminated, without mercy.

I must say, this Morgan is quite an irresistible character. She practically dances off the page, in her high heeled shoes and her revealing ensembles. She mercilessly teases Xander with her unique pack of paranormal gifts. It isn’t long before the formidable Xander starts melting, but we are given to understand that this is not his usual style. Morgan, you see, is unique. Her life may be in danger from you, but she’ll defy you to the end and tell you to go to hell if you piss her off. You get the picture? Somehow, she manages to pull it off.

Morgan’s mission to find the Expurgari is accomplished in the most surprising and unexpected ways. Along the way, she discovers an unknown colony of Ikati, living in one of the holiest shrines of the Christian world. Xander may be hard boiled, but he’s not evil, having survived horrific abuse as a child. The evil characters in this tale would give your nightmares nightmares, with ghoulish hints of bondage, torture and terror. Only hints, mind you, but heck, it’s enough! This writer was skilful enough to credibly reproduce the roughhousing banter of male company, extremely hard boiled male company. I didn’t hear the voice of a woman in that narrative and was quite surprised to learn that the author was female, as the name doesn’t give the gender away.

As Morgan and Xander come to know each other and their unique personalities better and better, time grows short and the heat is on. Morgan proves her loyalty and Xander comes to realize, even as he grows to care, that she is not the traitor she’s supposed to be. But as danger closes in around Morgan. As she edges towards the catacombs of Rome, will Xander be able to reach her on time and will he be able to save her? And will he save her to have to kill her ultimately? That’s the hook that will have the reader turning the pages.

There are love scenes, pretty hot at that, but nothing slows down the pace of this novel. And the author has left me with a lasting impression, which none other has ever done. She’s turned the Vatican into a veritable house of horrors. I, a lifelong paid up member of the church, saw this place as the center of the Christian universe. That’s all changed now. Why, it’s a mausoleum, a two thousand year old tomb, full of rotting bones and corruption. Why didn’t that ever strike me before?

A low, rumbling growl, from a back corner of the cell, a corner so black he couldn’t fathom it. Rich and spine chilling, with an unmistakable tone of warning, it was a sound he’d recognize anywhere. Then out of the blackness, a glow appeared, two almond shaped points of hot, burning green.

Edge of Oblivion, the second book in the Night Prowler series by J.T. Geissinger, is an elegant paranormal romance with well developed characters and a well paced plot. The world building is well done and easy to understand. Creating her own version of lore, shared in this books prologue, Ms. Geissinger creates the Ikati, an ancient tribe of panther shapeshifters with their own political issues hidden amongst the world we live in today.

At the beginning of this book, Morgan Montgomery, a young, powerful, and seductively beautiful member of the Ikati has been found guilty of treason and has been sentenced to death. Prepared to meet her death, and do it gracefully so as not to give her enemies any additional gossip, she's surprised to be given a chance at redemption. Not a great chance, but a chance none the less. She never planned on getting a second chance or on falling in love with the enforcer sent to make sure she completes her tasks or dies trying. Ms. Geissinger did an excellent job creating Morgan's character, I liked her from the very beginning and was rooting for her to somehow get a second chance. As we get to know her, I began to understand how what she wants for her people, the Ikati, got her in trouble and yet I saw her as a noble character who really only wants the best for a society which really needs to adapt.

Xander Luna is known as a fierce warrior and enforcer. Known more for his execution skills, he's not surprised to be assigned to watch over Morgan and help her complete her assigned task, destroying their enemy, the Expurgari. He's quite capable of killing her if she fails or attempts to escape from his supervision, he just never planned on developing feelings for her. Ms. Geissinger did a good job introducing us to Xander, he's powerful, somewhat ruthless and has blocked out most of his emotions at the beginning of this book. As he gets to know Morgan more, Ms. Geissinger brings him emotionally alive and we get to witness his growth.

The scenes between Morgan and Xander are well written and have good dialogue. They are both powerful and they both need to grow emotionally. We watch them grow closer together and realize exactly what's at stake as the story moves along. The secondary characters are also well written and make good contributions to the plot. I especially liked Jenna and Leander, the Queen and Alpha of the Ikati, who for reasons of their own put Morgan and Xander together.

Will Morgan and Xander's trip to Rome reveal what they need? Will Morgan get her chance at redemption and freedom? You'll have to read Edge of Oblivion to find out. While I was able to read and enjoy this book on it's own, I do plan to go back and read Shadow's Edge, the first book in the series as there were times I did feel I would have understood or gotten more out of certain sections of this book if I had read it first.

But it will be the mad King’s daughter who believes she has been betrayed, by the man that she loves, and it will be her need for revenge that could spark a war within her own tribe.

J.T introduces EDGE OF OBLIVION with a prologue that covers the basic history of the Ikati tribes. As a reader, the history is of major importance when the storyline ventures into a centuries old war and I, for one, am grateful when the author includes the major storyline premise with each instalment.

I like how J.T. handled the mating fever of the Ikati females. Similar to Feehan’s Leopard series, the heat will affect all of the males, regardless of their connection to the one, but in the case of Edge of Oblivion, some are more affected than others and the reality will hit home when the war between the Ikati and the Expurgari claims another victim.

Edge of Oblivion is a fascinating look at panther shifters and their legacy of love and war, hatred and pain, sorrow and loss. Similar to many other shifter storylines, there are not enough females for the males, and they have had to look to the human population for mates. But the half-bloods have some issues when they reach maturity and it is the mad King’s legacy that will continue to research and discover that his plans to re-populate the world with Ikari shifters that will pose more of a threat to humans than their own kind.

J.T. Geissinger has created an amazing world of action and romance, where man and beast are one. I am looking forward to the next storyline –here’s hoping that the mad King’s daughter can work through her issues of trust before she kills the man who would one day be her mate.

This was a fantastic second installation in the night prowler series. I loved Morgan from the first book and admit I was apprehensive about her staring in this one.( No spoilers here read book 1 and you will understand why.) I was very pleasantly surprised. What a fantastic read! J.T Geissinger has stepped it up for Urban Fantasy. Book one (Shadow's Edge) was hit for me, but I never thought it could get better. It did. J.T has taken us deeper into the world of the Ikati and things are more messed up than you'd think.

It gave us some great insight into why the Ikati have become who they are today and why they have chosen a life of secrecy.

In Edge of Oblivon, we are following Morgan after she has been found guilty of being a traitor. She gave information about her people to their enemy and put many lives in jeopardy. While that may not sound like a heroine you can root for, here is a quote of Morgan remembering a day from her childhood when she saw the cruelty of her tribe.

“She’d been there the long-ago day his mother had dropped his newborn sister-tiny, puling, and deformed- into the yawning black mouth of the Drowning Well, then turned and walked away without even shedding a tear. Waist high and frightened among the somber, gathered adults, Morgan had clutched her father’s hand and felt terrified and proud there was nothing wrong with her, no deformity or weakness that would compel the tribe to shun her, compel her own mother to make a trip to this unholy place or risk death for all her other children and herself.”

As you can see, her tribe shows no mercy and on top of that they have very strict rules they enforce on the women of the tribe. Which is why Morgan has become the person she is today. She grew up in a world where her life has been dictated for her and she had very few choices of her own. Her motto is “live free or die” which is how she has ended up in the situation she is now. The enemy promised her freedom in exchange for information and that is the one thing she craves over all else. I admired her courage and determination to have a life that was her own. Her people, however, are not so impressed and have decreed that she needs to find the lair of the Expurgari to destroy them once and for all to gain her freedom or she will return and be executed. While on this journey she is accompanied by the man that is to be her executer, Xander. He is just as determined as Morgan to live his own life. He has a tortured past that haunts him and has turned him into a killer with seemingly no remorse. The two of them have an instant attraction to one another, but the situation they find themselves in keeps either one from acting on it.

The emotional tension between these two burned white hot for the entire book, but the physical side was a slower build. They had too many issues they had to work through and neither believes there is a happy ending in their future. They are both struggling with thinking they even deserve to be happy. This inner turmoil made Edge of Oblivion such an emotional journey for both characters. Morgan says to Xander:

“We both know how to live broken. But the past is just that. Past. And the future is out of our hands. Neither one has a place here with us now. Let it all go and just be with me.”

The city of Rome was an amazing backdrop for the plot in Edge of Oblivion. It was almost like another character with all the vivid descriptions J.T. painted for us and the locations within it that played pivotal roles in the plot. I have not been to Rome myself, but I felt like I was transported there for the duration of this novel and could clearly see all of the places Morgan and Xander visited.

While the book does focus on Morgan and Xander, we do get a couple other characters points of view. We briefly visit with Leander and Jenna at the beginning of the novel with Morgan’s sentencing, but that is the only time we see familiar faces. I was not sure I was going to like being taken away from what I already knew, but I ended up enjoying meeting new characters, especially the Ikati that live in Rome. They were a big surprise in terms of how they thought and the role they ended up playing in Morgan’s story. I am not sure if the next book will involve them or not, but I will be interested to see where everyone ends up after the ending in this book.

Overall, Edge of Oblivion was a great addition to this series! It was an emotional ride, but I loved watching Morgan and Xander learn how to love and trust one another. Edge of Oblivion is a great paranormal romance read and I cannot wait to see what J.T. will bring us in the future.(less)

The narrative changed to different viewpoints pretty often too, at least 6 different people that I can recall.

J.T. Geissinger breathes fresh life into the paranormal romance genre with the Night Prowler series. Edge of Oblivion captivated me with the thrilling excitement of the plot and the smoldering relationship that developed between Morgan and Xander. I somehow missed the first book in the series, Shadow's Edge, but after reading Edge of Oblivion I really want to go back and read it. Even without having read the first book, I didn't have trouble figuring out the world of the Ikati and understanding the nature of the jaguar shifters and their world.

Edge of Oblivion is the type of paranormal book where the supernatural world exists within the normal human world. The Ikati are a group of jaguar shifters who all have unique abilities and gifts in addition to their shape-shifter form. The gifts range from persuasion to turning into mist. The range of characters with various personalities and abilities is immense, well-develped and makes for intriguing reading.

In Edge of Oblivion the protagonist is Morgan, she is on a mission to uncover their enemies in a last ditch effort to save her life after making mistakes that almost cost the Queen her life (book 1). Even though I didn't know the specifics of how she wound up in trouble, it was easy to understand Morgan. All she wanted was to be free to be her own person and not have her life dictated to her. I sympathized with her and found myself rooting for her. Then there is Xander, a deadly assassin-slash-Morgan's-babysitter. He had to keep tabs on Morgan and if she didn't complete her mission, it would be his job to kill her. However, as the pair works together and discovers a hidden pack of Ikati in Rome, attraction between them grows.

There are quite a few different aspects to this story, more than I could possible sum up and I don't want to give away the book. Let me make it simple and say that the plot lines are very detailed, there are side stories and various viewpoints that all somehow relate to the main storyline (I apologize for the vagueness). The Ikati even have their own mythology to add to the story. The secondary characters are intriguing as well and I am eager to learn what happens next for many of them.

Edge of Oblivion blends together action, fantasy, shape-shifters, and romance into a well-developed and intricate paranormal novel with intriguing and likable characters. When it comes to paranormal romance, I couldn't ask for more.

Readers, if you are a fan of paranormal romance, urban fantasy, or shape shifters I definitely recommend checking out this series. I don't think you have to read books 1 and 2 in order, but it will likely only enhance your reading experience. I want to go back and read book 1 and I hope that J.T. Geissinger has big plans for book 3!

Live free or die, is something Morgan lives by and what ultimately lead her to making the difficult decision to commit treason against the Ikati. The demands set against all Ikati females was too much for her to take, but a desperate move leaves Morgan in a different kind of prison, no longer gilded, where execution is the only way to obtain true freedom. However, with a new Queen in power, Morgan may be used as a bargaining chip in a political turf war within the Ikati. A lifeline is offered to Morgan that could make her dream of living free come true… if she can find the Expurgari within two weeks first.

As an assassin trained from childhood to act and not feel, Xander is well aware of what he might have to do with his latest assignment. The “mark” he is told to eliminate if she fails in her task might have the charm and beauty to drive any other man to distraction, but Xander has learned to immunize himself against such things. His upbringing left him a hardened shell of a man with more than a few scars and after one failed experience at love, no one has been able to penetrate Xander’s emotional barriers... until her. Unfortunately, Xander may have to kill her or risk more dangerous exposure to the Ikati and his heart.

The story picks up not long after the first one ended and the situation with what to do with Morgan the traitor has grown dire for a few different reasons. Power being the chief operator for some high-ranking Ikati to make Morgan an example and to show dominance over the new Queen, but unbeknownst to them there is a much bigger power play underway. I was pleasantly surprised to find so much unexpected depth in this story and I am excited at all of the opened doors of possibilities for future installments to the series.

I was worried after all of the fallout Morgan’s actions caused that I wouldn’t find her redeemable as a heroine in her own story, but the author does a great job of making the reader understand her and ultimately root for her. She is defiant and doesn’t back down no matter how hard things get, plus she manages to do it while still remaining her glamorous self clad in expensive clothing and high heels. Morgan’s “gentleman assassin” as she begins referring to Xander as is exactly that. I had to grow to like him since he really does take his job as an assassin very seriously, but learning of Xander’s hardships and what makes him tick made it impossible not to fall for him. When these two finally come together, it is intense, passionate, possessive, and definitely sexy.

The story has a fast pace feel that can be attributed to the outstanding writing of a truly villainous villain, an action-packed plotline, and the nearly flawless shift of POV’s between characters. To understand the back-story of the Ikati, it is necessary to read the first book, but the roller-coaster ride is definitely just getting started with this one. The introduction of so many new characters and open-ended story arc has me highly anticipating the next book.

I'll admit, I didn't enjoy this one as much as the 1st book. Right up front I'll let 1st time readers of the series know that they should read "Shadows' Edge" before this one. The book starts right off where book 1 ended and there is no recapping. So if you haven't read the 1st book you might be a little confused at first. The story starts with Morgan being held in a dark dungy prison and she's about to be executed. She's accused of high treason. However, the new Queen (Jenna) hatches a plan. The plan is to send Morgan to Rome to find the Expurgari (the bad guys from book 1) and she has two weeks to complete this mission. If it all pans out, she'll be pardoned. However, she will travel to Rome with the assassin, Xander (who we briefly met in the 1st book). Xander is there to kill her if she fails her mission. Xander is a very complex character. He is caught off guard by Morgan's beauty, composure, pride and strength. And thus the romance starts.

So once in Rome, the story gets more complex. We are introduced to an unknown fury Ikati colony. An evil alpha male by the name of Dominus, is their leader. We follow their storyline as well. At times, there was so much going on that I found it a bit distracting. I really would have preferred more book time for Morgan and Xander. However, i kept reading. We are introduced to the presumptive hero and heroine for the next book and they come from this fury colony. I'm not quite feeling them yet. I'm already having doubts and dislikes with the heroine for book 3. She's a bit too naive for my taste. She (Eliana) is the daughter of the evil alpha. Her father tries to hide his dark side from her. In the meantime we know that Eliana doesn't really like him. She knows he keeps secretes and she knows he is a ruthless man. It's a bit confusing cause she knows he is evil but yet towards the end of the book she still chooses to remain loyal. There's actually way more to why she choose to remain loyal (however, it's not really loyalty but more confusion that guides her to the decision she made in the end). I don't want to spoil it for you. You'll have to read to find out what I mean.

So as I kept reading and getting closer to the end, I was a bit worried that Morgan and Xander might not get a HEA. However, it all wraps up. I was a bit disappointed with how quickly it all wrapped up. The end moved so fast then seemed to abruptly end. While we learn just a little more about the Ikati, there were no new positive changes or developments for the Ikati society. I had hopes that the Queen (Jenna) would make some progress with making some changes to the Assembly. Possibly implementing new laws that will allow more freedom for the female Ikati. However, we only read of Jenna and Leander in the beginning of the book and by the end of the book, we are still left with the same oppressive society that the Ikati women have to live in. I was also disappointed that there was no Daria or Christian in this book (characters from book 1). Bummers.

This book was still enjoyable and there's still much more that I haven't included in my review. Did I mention, the love scenes between Morgan and Xander are HOT! I very much enjoyed the hero and heroine of this book. Morgan stayed true to her character from book one and Xander is the perfect strong male to handle her. In all, I am still very excited and hopeful about the future of the Ikati society. I am anxiously awaiting positive changes and developments for them. I will definitely continue reading the series. I still very much enjoyed J.T. Geissinger's writing style. She continues to brilliantly create very vivid, colorful and breathtaking memories of the Ikati world.

And here is the second volume by J.T. Geissinger. I must say that I was really curious to get into this new one. Although I loved the first book about Jenna, I was eager to follow Morgan this time. It’s interesting because she is a very complex character and it was really nice to discover her a little more.

The novel continues immediately after the first one, Jenna is now the Queen but Morgan is always accused of high treason after what she did. And there is only one solution to that, as for all crimes: death. But our heroine perfectly understands this choice and even if she doesn't want to die, she accepts it without rebelling. But luckily for her, Jenna who greatly appreciates her, has another solution on the day of the sentence. Morgan must go to Rome to find out who the Expurgari are and to kill them once and for all to destroy the threat. But for this, she must be accompanied by Xander, a heartless assassin who will take care of her if she fails. However, their arrival in Rome will totally be turned upside down when they encounter a not identified Ikati who intends to meddle in their affairs.

This novel is full of surprises and I really enjoyed following this new couple so different from the first one. It was cute to discover these two characters and see their feelings rising slowly and changing. Well, they both flatly refuse to deal with what they feel, knowing how all this will end. Both of them are complex and interesting, and we take pleasure in understanding them throughout the story. Morgan keeps her composure under all circumstances, and as the first volume presented her to us, she is one of the most courageous and honest woman. A very good point for her.

We immediately wonder who are these Ikati in Rome and what they will bring to the story. But we have our answers all along the story, we even open up new possibilities for the rest of the story. We remained fairly confined to the same places in the first volume, and especially the tribe, it was interesting to see other places and I hope it will continue like that.

This new novel was therefore a beautiful surprise as the first one. A very good volume with a love story that we enjoy as soon as we start the book.(less)

From villain to heroine, Morgan's story was just as awesome as I could have hoped. Choked under a restrictive, patriarchal rule her whole life, it was not hard to empathize with Morgan's efforts to break free. EDGE OF OBLIVION offers her the barest hope of redemption, and is my favorite Night Prowler book to date.

This book is better than the first ☺.

So this book seems to start a couple of weeks after the first book. Jenna and Leander are married and Jenna is settling into her role as Queen.

Morgan is charged with treason for her part in what happened at the end of book one. She is going to be executed. Morgan is about to die but Jenna cant let that happen so she sends her on a mission with Xander as her keeper. Morgan is a firecracker who doesn't give up so its no surprise that she will do anything to complete her mission and stay alive. Xander is an assassin and is willing to take care of Morgan if she doesn't complete her task. Of course neither of them imagined that they would fall for each other in the process.

I remember feeling sorry for Morgan in the fist book. She was not at all happy with her predicament as a potential breeder. She didn't want to be handed off to some random male to produce gifted babies. She wanted a life of her own, of her choosing. At the end of the last book she is captured and imprisoned for her crime. So when I received Edge of Oblivion for review, I was a little surprised to see that it was a book about Morgan.

This story doesn't just follow Morgan though, it also follows her assassin companion, Xander. He's a very complex character who is in the same position Morgan's in. Yes he is an assassin but he hates it. He doesn't like to kill and he keeps a tally of his kills on his chest as a reminder of who he is. At first he treats Morgan like a normal assignment but when she tells him about her past and what her intended future was supposed to be when all she wanted was the freedom to choose the person that she wanted to become, he quickly starts to see her as Morgan, the woman. However, his job is crystal clear, if she can't produce the location of the enemy then he must kill her. Except the more time he spends with her the more he finds himself questioning whether he will actually be able to go through with it or not.

There is also yet another story... oh yes there's more! That follows the enemy and his colony. It turns out that there is a feral colony on the loose that no one's ever heard of before and their Alpha is crazy... and I don't mean in a good way. He is making more Ikati to grow his colony in preparation to take out all the other colonies and be ruler of all the Ikati. When he see's Morgan out in the town he smells the unmated female and has to have her as his Queen.

Not to mention while all of this is going on, the princess of the feral colony is in love with one of the enforcers, Demetrius. He's loved Eliana for years and has tried to keep his distance from her. He knows how insane her father is and if he ever caught wind that Demetrius made a move towards Eliana, his head would be rolling on the floor. However, one thing leads to another and Demetrius and Eliana share their feelings for one another and due to certain events that take place, I feel like their story might be the next in the series. And I personally cannot wait!

J.T, got me with her debut novel and still has my attention in the sequel. She is quickly becoming an author that no matter what she writes, I will pick it up. I am a fan of her writing style. She gives you details but doesn't go over board leaving you bored and skimming through pages. She makes you connect and feel for the characters in her stories to where you want to cry when something bad happens to them. I definitely look forward to reading more of her work.

Our heroine, Morgan, has been sentenced to death for endangering the secrets and wellfare of her Ikati colony. Luckily for her, the Queen of the colony is a close friend and not one who is willing to just see Morgan executed. Her only saving grace is to travel to Rome under the watchful eye of the Queen's Consort's brother (and one of the colony's best assassins), Xander, to find the elusive Expurgari - the tribe's enemy of old.

During their trip, Morgan and Xander get WAY more than they bargained for - secrets, mayhem, murder, betrayal, and lust to just name a few, all wrapped up in the secretive world of the Ikati and layered under the ancient history of the Vatican.

Edge of Oblivion was a dark, dangerous, sexy, action-packed thrill ride and I wanted more the minute the last page was flipped.

LITERAL ADDICTION gives Edge of Oblivion 5 Skulls and recommends it to Paranormal addicts far and wide (Urban Fantasy junkies, Paranormal Romance lovers, and fans of the Shifter supe-group should definitely check out this book and the series as a whole).

Sometimes an author is lucky (or maybe I should say talented) and all the stars align perfectly so that the end result of all their hard work, a finished and published book, is exquisite. I bought this without realizing it was part of a series so I was worried that I'd be lost and I admit, as I was reading the prologue I was thinking oh boy, this was a mistake. But no, it was fine! From chapter one I managed to pick up the story without much trouble and it actually turned into a great read.
