Simply delicious to the last drop! Tess Gerritsen always delivers a great read, but Last to Die is an especially tasty treat. Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles are at their best in this blood chilling tale about three teens who have each survived two massacres involving their families and their foster families. I was disappointed in Tess Gerritsen's latest R & I book. I couldn't wait to read this but fairly quickly felt that some things were lacking--one being Gerritsen's prose, which is usually dense and more evocative than the language used to render other thrillers out there on the market. In fact, within ten pages she repeated the line "Come with me if you want to live." Where have I heard that before? Terminator, where it's been done to death.

Nou ik nader het einde maar ik vind dit boek eigenlijk een beetje tegenvallen. Misschien ben ik een beetje te verwend door de prachtige boeken die ik de laatste tijd gelezen heb, dat zou kunnen. Maar nee De Laatste Sterft heeft het voorlopig nog niet. En als het nu nog moet komen... Al met al nog 100+ pagina's te gaan dus wie weet :)

There is something mysterious and magical about the beginning of a Rizzoli and Isles mystery. Gerritsen is a master at setting up a mysterious situation. Her new mystery has multiple murders, a castle deep in the woods of Maine and the dark cool brooding of Maura Isles. And then there is the down to earth no nonsense Jane Rizzoli to balance it all out. It takes pages to tie it all together but that is the whole fun of reading one of these things. :)

Very interesting story and never would have guessed who was behind those murders. I also loved the quiet moments between Jane and Maura...so overdue! Can't wait to see how the friendship between those two develops from there and I also can't wait to read more about Jane and her crazy family! ;)

I confess from the moment I picked up TG's first book and read it straight through, I became a fan forever. All she has done is improve to a level of plotting and storying telling that is gripping, compelling and addictive.
I don't summarize plots, but I can tell you it is a doozie. This may be TG's best book ever in the Rizzoli and Isles series. And, PLEASE, don't confuse these books with the TV show, they are the same only in the names of the characters.

#10 in the Jane Rizzoli & Maura Isles series. This entry leans heavily on continuing the story of "Rat" Perkins from Ice Cold (2010). If you haven't read it, you'll miss out on some references, but there is plenty new going on. I haven't been as fortunate as other readers to read this book in the proper order of the series; that notwithstanding, I was able to follow the character development (which Gerritsen does an outstanding job with) and did pick up nuances and references from earlier books about Maura, Jane, Father Brophy, Anthony Sansone and Julian. Well, this was such a page turner that rather than prepare for Thanksgiving dinner, I sat in a chair and did not get up until I finished (fortunately, I still had a day left to prepare). This is the latest in the Rizzoli-Isles series. I prefer the books to the TV series because the books meet my mental image of the characters far more than the actresses on the screen do. Also, Maura Isles is not the annoying pedant that she is on television.

The TV show has spoiled this series. Books are always better, but after seeing the TV shows, it kind of messes with your own perceptions. You constantly compare them. Story was excellent; as always, a little far-fetched. Maybe too much time in between books -- couldn't remember some of the past details of previous stories. I guess that's why I enjoy finding an author I haven't read and going through their list of books to read one after another. Definitely a good book -- kept my interest through...more

The Mephisto Club. Intriguing, but not terribly memorable.
The Keepsake. My memories of this one are vague, because not much from that one stuck in my mind.
Ice Cold. Truly awesome one, very cinematic. I would love to see that story get featured in a two-episode arc of the TV series, but it might be too cost-prohibitive, production-wise.
The Silent Girl. About on a level with The Mephisto Club, but coming after Ice Cold that's not really...more

Last to Die is a complex story with multiple plot lines -- a couple that reach back into older books in the series, and a few more than introduce new characters. This is a challenge that would defeat many novelists, but Gerritsen handles it all deftly.

I thought Last to Die was a great addition to Gerritsen's Rizzoli and Isles series. I like the character of Jane Rizzoli more with each book, and Maura Isles is a great counterpart for her. The storyline in this one was fast moving and had plenty of action. It kept me guessing and changing my mind about what I thought was actually happening. I would have liked to see a bit more of Gabriel Dean, as I love seeing him working on cases also, but other than that, the story worked for me on all levels...more
It felt a bit short (many of her recent novels do), but I still loved it. The question of "evil: an entity that has a plan to destroy humanity or ultimately banal?" comes up again in this book when Maura goes to Evensong Academy to visit Julian (from Ice Cold. She encounters Anthony Sansone (who is basically Bruce Wayne, not sure about the Batman yet) and learns more about the Mephisto club, who hold the former opinion of evil.
