Bad Sex On Speed is a savage, careening, hyper-real nightmare of a novel, taking us to the depths of Amphetamine America. Told with no concession to traditional narrative, in the voices of those in the grips and on the fringes, the stories that emerge are at once devastating, hysterical, and—perhaps most terrifying of all—going on all around you, all the time. Stahl digs d ...more

Were it not for the two puppies that die, which I find disturbing even as an adult, this book would have 5 stars. After many many fines I dropped on this book for failing to pick it up, it was worth every penny. The picture on the cover really has nothing to do with the story, so if you judge it by that you're missing out.

If Jerry isn't an addict in real life, he is the best actor/investigative reporter ever. The closest to Burroughs I've experienced, he runs rampant with sinful fantasies, drug

Experimental effort that requires sophisticated reader with high tolerance for pain by proxy. You feel the the various narrator's spun out lunacy , even empathize with their vile condition . It is a book one may read in one sitting to fully comprehend the whole which is remarkable when you consider the fragments it holds together. This is a book ahead of its time. I don't think it will become appreciated until society looks at addiction in another way. That is inevitable given the escalating dep ...more

I have to admit I've never read anything by Jerry Stahl prior to Bad Sex On Speed. His best known work, Permanent Midnight, is on my queue, as well as the film, but his notorious subject matter, specifically of the hardcore junkie lifestyle, has always been intimidating to me. I guess it's been my loss.

In his latest venture, no matter crazy the situations get, Stahl has the ability to retain a detached intelligence about it. In the opening story, which shares the same name as the book, the secon

Rail thin, bad greasy skin, rotted horse teeth, receding gums, inflamed scratches on the forearms and hands, mile a minute talk, talk, talk, talk, talk for hours and hours and hours on end, until they finally bottom out and collapse into a coma like sleep…..

Meth has been a national obsession over the last fifteen years. Dozens of writers, songwriters, filmmakers, and television folks have used it as fodder to one degree of success or another. But the one fault of most artists when tryin

Here is the mirror - when you are done snorting off it - take a good long look at the unrecognizable face, the chaotic eyes and mangled mess of whatever is left of whatever is staring, peering, leering back at you (if you are still there at all). Stahl's rant and run on the madness that is addiction and being amped (always) is brutal and brilliant. Come not weak of heart – the speed alone will kill you – never mind the things that Stahl depicts which so few have courage to shed light on. I liked ...more

I could not resist picking this up today at Three Lives! As soon as I finish my gritty, methy novel (takes place in southerm California & I had the opportunity to do some of my research in a prison) I am going to devour this novella like an evil cupcake!

Pročitao sam BAD SEX ON SPEED Jerryja Stahla.

I love this book. It is a particular kind of perverse that made me laugh and cringe at the same time. I really enjoy the delighted but mortified tone of the narrator. My hat is off to Jerry Stahl for making me laugh and shake my head and go back to re-read a few parts while muttering, "what the hell just happened". Not for the tender of sensibilities as usual with his work.

3 1/2 stars. Stream of consciousness for tweakers. Yuk. Not the book, but the high. Luckily speed was never my thing... too much like poison.

Shelves: adult-fiction insight into how methamphetamine addicts feel/behave when they're high. Not a book for the squeamish. I enjoyed the writing style and pace. Very quick read and enlightening.

Meh. Some great descriptions of meth use and various vile characters associated with the practice, bit it left me with a huge "So what?" feeling.

I liked it but was disappointed by its brevity. There is a flicker of an interesting plot thread that doesn't pan out. As my high school English teacher used to say..."more meat needed".
