Well, this is a toughy. It was a decent enough read for its genre and the second half was tough to put down. But the female characters, including the main character, were obsessed with fashion and men in that order and their fabulous bikini-clad bodies, and it really began to get ludicrous given what was going on. As the others, this novel is like a whirlwind - or maybe more like a hurricane - battering furiously away at the plot and barely giving the poor protagonist, Joanne Baldwin, time to breathe. Poor Joanne, things just seem to go from bad to worse for her - and that's pretty serious given she's died twice in earlier instalments.

This series has been sitting in my "To-Read" list for a very long time... longer than this account has been active, as a matter of fact. Now that I've finally gotten started, I'm once again kicking myself for missing out for so long.

In her mind, her biggest fight is David's condition, all the other issues take a far backseat. If she doesn't find a way to fix him, he will continue to lose power until he becomes just a mindless, power sucking, killing machine. She needs her powers more than ever to protect herself now that the peace between the wardens and the djinn is crumbling. However, in order to keep David alive and himself, she must let him continue to slowly eat away at her powers, but that puts her and her unborn djinn child at an extreme risk of being completely drained to death. She has to basically choose between herself and her unborn child and the man she loves more than anything. I think the only reason she is even considering not choosing David over herself is because of that potential baby. In the past she has never hesitated to sacrifice herself for others, but how do you pick the love of your life over your own child?

Just like the previous ones in the series, this book is extremely fast paced and one thing after another is thrown at Joanne. It seems it will only be a matter of time before she won't be able to pick up the pieces anymore. It ended with yet another cliff hanger, and the next book promises to be even more of a "nail bitter" than this one. This is most definitely not a series to read out of order as one book thoroughly leads into the next. Make sure to start at the beginning, and you won't be disappointed.(less)

So, you've had a rough couple of weeks. You've died, been reborn, died again. Your boyfriend isn't human, and he's eating your energy bit by bit. I give it 3.75, it was a fun book and a good installment in the series. It's definitely not stand-alone book, it really needs to be read as part of the big story arc. Part of what makes it interesting to me is the issue of how Jo deals with being almost powerless and alone while being attacked from all sides, magical and mundane. In addition, there is are the big story story arcs that are being explored, that of her relationships with David and Lewis, of the roles of Djinn and Wardens in the wor...more I give it 3.75, it was a fun book and a good installment in the series. If the reader hadn't read previous books, Jo's less-thank kick-ass-ness (I know, not a real word) might be annoying. I read a review where the writer noted that the way that Jo worries about her car, hair, and wardrobe made her seem frivolous, but that's part of what I consider to be her endearing, humorous, down to earth and realistic, and previously identified, character. The reviewer also noted that Jo frequently turned to men, I assume she means David and Lewis, for help instead of solving her own problems. For one thing, I don't think that's entirely true, but also that didn't annoy me because it was an exploration of a dynamic that was a continuing part of the big story arc, so I thought it made sense for the story and was interesting. And it also got back to the issue of how Jo without her Warden power would react in desperate situations.

I had to knock a bit off my rating is because some things were too predictable. People are introduced or situations arose that were so clearly foreshadowed that it took the fun out of things. It was still a great read and fun to watch it unfold and twist together, but a bit more subtly would have been appreciated.

I also have to comment on the cover - the last three were greet, I really appreciated that the publisher supported the books by having original art created that so closely reflected a scene from each book, each was really lovely and cool. But why the heck is Jo carrying a gun in this one? That's just a big bizarre marketing WTF. I get that they wanted to make an exciting action-oriented cover and probably didn't want to pay for original art anymore (so sad), but that was dumb. She doesn't use guns. She gets held at gunpoint s few times though...(less)

She's living in a tiny apartment, working at a crappy job as a weather girl, her Djinn boyfriend David is weak (which in turn has depleted her powers), and her newly divorced older sister shows up on her doorstep broke and homeless. Three wardens pay her a visit and bring her to a wreckage located near Bad Bob's former home, caused by a nasty storm to see if she'll confess to causing it - but she is innocent. They aren't the only people to pay her a visit though. A detective with a grudge is gunning for Joanne - who thinks she has something to do with the disappearance of Quinn, his former partner back in Las Vegas. Another feature is Eamon Drake, a British cutie who has the hots for Jo's older sister, Sarah.

All hell is breaking loose in Windfall, with catastrophes of epic proportions. Joanne is caught in the middle of course, trying to fix it all like the selfless, courageous heroine that she is. There are a number of things that make the series really great; the consistent appearances of the cast (minus Paul and Marion), the unpredictable messes Joanne gets herself into, the numerous storylines where they all seem to present themselves at equal priority, and the effortlessly balanced big-picture and small-picture writing that Caine is just so great at. This series isn't just any other series, it's a like a supernatural fantasy drama show. It's not something new and fresh with each installment, but a great big story split in parts.

I only had a few complaints though. It really irked me how Joanne is always manhandled and has to have someone assist/rescue her. Although all the females in the series are headstrong, they seem to be less respected, and less powerful. I also cringed at the scenes with Eamon and Joanne...but other than that, I really do think this series is great and definitely worth a read. While the first two books had happy endings, Chill Factor and Windfall had grim endings, which make the story all the more believable. If you haven't read these books yet, you're missing out! 4.5/5 stars.

At first the "Interludes" kinda annoyed me, but when it got near the end and the reason for the interludes was clear, I appreciated that POV. It was unexpected and now I wish it was a little more in depth. I don't want to say too much and spoil it.

Quinn’s death also returns to haunt her when his former detective partner, Rodriguez starts following Joanne and demanding answers about his mysterious disappearance. The arrival of a new man in Sarah’s life turns out to be more than what he appears and becomes a serious threat for Joanne and her sister.

Meanwhile the Djinn have split up into two factions, those who follow Jonathon and those who follow Ashan. With Jonathon is missing, matters take a sinister turn when rogue Wardens with demon marks target Lewis and other Wardens are murdered at the hands of their own Djinn in order to obtain their freedom. A supernatural Civil war seems inevitable. The Wardens place the blame firmly at Joanne’s door and accuse her of tampering with the weather despite her protestations.
With the peace between the Warden’s and Djinn disintegrating, Joanne has never needed her parents more. However, by allowing David to feed from her, she risks her own life and that of her unborn Djinn child. Joanne knows that by freeing David, she risks him targeting Jonathon, the most powerful of the Djinn who is also the Warden’s only hope of reining in the rogue Djinn. However, a tired and disenchanted Jonathon has other ideas....

At first I thought the ‘interlude’ parts were based on Joanne’s point of view and I found myself skipping them at the beginning of the book. I was surprised when realized they were from Jonathan's point of view and that the storm was in fact a new incarnation of the ancient storm that had led him to make the deal with the Wardens that had allowed them to enslave the Djinn all those years ago. Jonathon’s demise was sad as I had liked him and had hoped to learn more about his past and what drove him. So much about him has been left up in the air. Why had he become so disillusioned and disassociated with his own brethren?

The introduction of Cherise and Joanne’s daughter, Imara were the only highlights in an otherwise, discouraging installment in the series so far. I felt dejected by Joanne’s situation, struggling to make ends meet in a crappy apartment with a crappy job. When she’s not being pursued by a hostile cop, she’s being threatened by the Wardens as well as the Djinn. At first I was encouraged by the introduction of Sarah’s British beau, Eamonn as he seemed on hand whenever Joanne found herself in trouble. Unfortunately he turned out to be another unpleasant character that had been in league with Quinn. Things always seem to go from bad to worse for Joanne; she never seems to catch a break. As the books have progressed, I feel that the books as well as the character of Joanne have lost some of their charm and I’m inclined to take a break from the series for a while.

This is the Mills & Boon of the fantasy world, easy reading with very mild sexual references, quite a lot of slushy love stuff and far too much emphasis on fashion. Okay, so I liked the first book in this series and the second and third books were really, really good. But this one... I actually almost didn't finish it. Why? Because pretty much every character annoyed me in this book!

This is a weak point in the series. This one felt a little slow getting started, but before I realised it I was about halfway through, so being slow to start definitely doesn't mean it's a lemon. Windfall takes us on another hell in a hand basket ride with Joanne Baldwin. Last go round Joanne had walked away from the Wardens with David, her dying Djinn lover, in very dire straits. Based on what I've read in the Outcast Season- which is a spin-off of this one- it would seem that we are now starting the events that will lead up to that series.

I just love Joanne, who is such fun and spunky and generally awesome. Her as a weather girl was really amusing, but seeing her trying to live a normal life was both amusing and interesting. Trouble seems to follow her everywhere, and with her not being a warden and her powers being almost completely gone because of David as an Ifrit...well, let's just say things get super interesting in Windfall. With the Wardens wondering if she's behind bizarre weather patterns in Florida and people out to get her, Joanne having seriously depleted powers...Joanne really can't catch a break. Then again, if she did,

It's definitely action-packed, with Joanne nearly dying several times throughout the book. We also meet her sister, and it wasn't a surprise that she met the guy Quinn was working for. I wasn't expecting it, but I really shouldn't have been surprised by that particular revelation.

Seeing Joanne's relationship with David was interesting, and it's really going to be different in the books to come. And it's all because of the end of the book! I'm also curious to see how things play out with the Wardens, the Ma'at and with Lewis. Especially Lewis. I feel like Windfall is the turning point, but I'll have to finish to rest of the series to know for sure.

Final Thoughts: I totally loved Windfall and I'm absolutely positive we're at the point where the other books will be REALLY hard to put down. Things are changing, and I can't wait to see how things turn out. Windfall is a fun, action-packed read. Windfall gets 5 stars.(less)

This is the 4th Weather Warden novel, which features Joanne Baldwin. I'd been waiting very IMpatiently for this instalment, and it didn't disappoint! I LOVED IT! These books are always a rollercoaster ride for the narrator as she finds herself in one bad situation after another.

Rachel's writing style is comfy, draws you into the action as if you're actually living through everything too. Very well written with excellent characters. The story - though it's the continuing arc of Jo's life - still...more

I really enjoyed this one. Only took off the one star for predictability. There were certain events that were just bound to happen and certain bad guys that you knew were bad guys right from the start. And I really, really miss the flashbacks.

I'm torn between giving this book four stars or five stars. I think it's actually better than the first three, but I liked it less. It was darker and more painful. And ended in a cliffhanger, just like the others. Drat! Makes it hard to take a break from the series, but I think I'm going to.

This was a great uplift in the weather warden series. The writing was better overall an improvement. I like the books though but I can acknowledge things like this can get gobbledy goop now and then. Isn’t it this gobbledy goop though that keeps us sane? In a reality of everything being so damn series I love stuff like this. It in combination with welcomed state of the art literature keeps the mind whole.

A slow start but it really picks up the pace. Everything is the line for Jo. David is getting sicker, she's getting weaker, and she's banned from using her pwoers under threat of having them permenantly removed.

Her adventure in Vegas is still affecting her life. There's a cop on her tail, she's no longer a Warden, and she's working for sleazy TV weatherman.

I enjoy this series so much I am actually surprised. Not one book has been like the others, although parts have been similar like David saving Joanne and her always being the scapegoat. I’m always surprised at how the book ends. I never see it coming. And the cast of characters is always great fun, especially Joanne.

I liked that this book was a little less frantic and catastrophic. A lot happens, but after the third book it does feel like Joanne was given a little bit of a break. And when I say...more
