This is that story. It isn’t pretty, and it makes no excuses for that.

Claire Fletcher, though young and naive, fights against her captor, trying her best to outrun the villain who subjects her to daily atrocities. He uses her fear against her to keep Claire hostage as he chips away at the girl she used to be, slowly and effectively destroying any hope of reuniting with her family and a mother who never gives up hope that Claire is still alive.

Even as she ages and becomes physically stronger, Claire cannot escape the torture and degradation. Her captor holds Claire in an emotional cage every bit as much as a physical one. To control her, he not only uses the threat of violence against those she loves most, he uses violence itself, hurting Claire’s family or killing those she asks for help. Knowing she cannot expose her loved ones or even strangers to the kind of cruel fate her kidnapper threatens, she resignedly settles into life as Lynn, the name her captor has given her.

Still a hostage, but allowed to leave her captor’s compound, Claire meets Police Detective Connor Parks at a bar. When she disappears following a chaste night together, leaving behind only an old family address, Connor discovers the beautiful woman he’s come to know as Claire Fletcher has been missing for ten years and is presumed dead. But he knows she’s not, and he’s determined to find her, even as his commander orders him off the case and Claire’s captor targets Connor as punishment for defying him.

Told from alternating points of view, we see the story emerge from both Claire’s perspective, as well as Connor’s. Author Lisa Regan delves into the mind of a sexual deviant, exposing and exploring what drives a man to such desperate acts. But while she alludes to the horrific misery Claire’s captor subjects her to, Regan never stoops to showing the acts themselves, only examining the effect such debased treatment has on his victim.

Those who wonder why women like Elizabeth Smart or Jaycee Dugard never attempted to leave their real-life captors will find the reasons eloquently explored in this well-written, hauntingly brutal, yet sweetly realized story, a story of love and determination to overcome the most heinous of fates.

Though it is superbly written and moves with intense, page-turning speed, Finding Claire Fletcher is not always an easy read in that it probes into the most corrupt behavior imaginable. It’s difficult to feel what the young Claire experiences as she is made to suffer at the hands of a pedophile. But as tough as those parts are to read, the story is balanced by the hope and memories Claire holds as a way of surviving her ordeal. And as much as it is Claire’s story, it is also Detective Park’s story, as well, analyzing the failure of his marriage and his precarious position within the police department following a questionable shooting and his involvement with Claire’s seemingly unsolvable cold case.

But in the end, Finding Claire Fletcher is a love story about a child and her mother, and the man, Connor Parks, who cannot forget or abandon her, and risks not only his career, but his own life to save Claire. This story will frighten you, make you angry, cry, and cringe, but it will also energize your faith in the human spirit and its ability to heal and move forward. Regan deserves every one of these five stars for her original and haunting debut novel. (less)

While any parent’s nightmare is losing their child to some unknown person, there are thousands of children who go missing yearly, without drawing national attention, and Claire is one of those. Ten years after having no word and fewer answers, people start appearing at her family’s home, asking about her. Crafted with twists and turns to show all sides of a kidnapped child's existence, we see all of Claire’s worlds, and begin to understand the mentality of the captive.

All of the characters are so well developed and defined that they fairly leap from the page. Told in two points of view, Claire’s voice is surprisingly sharp and strong, despite her situation. Connor’s voice is full of procedural logic, yet drafted with the completeness that makes him a good detective and a good man. Seeing such different character voices as the narration of the story could be confusing and difficult to follow, the author has skilfully adapted voice, meter and personality to clearly lead the reader where she wants them to go. My one reservation to recommending this novel to everyone without reservation is the torturous punishments meted out to Claire by her captor: paedophilia at is most bare sense, those moments were difficult to read and exceedingly graphic in emotional impact. That they are so real will be a difficult sticking point for some.

As a first novel, this author has created a beautifully crafted and highly engaging story, skilfully leading the reader into directions only she has forseen: all good things. Most certainly a book and an author to put on your follow lists, I look forward from more from her.

This book starts out like one of those haunting TV show I used to watch as a kid. A down on his luck detective meets a mysterious young woman in a bar. This was such an emotional roller coaster of a story, one that sticks with you in more ways than one after you finish reading. Thought-provoking and heart-wrenching, Lisa tells the story of a woman coping with having been kidnapped at a young age. Continuously tortured to the point where she's begun to question her very existence, Claire has had to endure a series of unfortunate events that have left her scarred emotionally, mentally, and physically for the rest of her life.

Beautifully written, this story touches upon several subject that are hard to speak of, but which I think must be told in order to give us a better understanding of the circumstances that victims of such crimes go through on a daily basis. Granted, not all of such victims make it out alive. Weaving a haunting, yet immersing story, Lisa is definitely an author to keep an eye on in the future.(less)

I spent pretty much the whole day reading this outstanding novel. From the first page the suspense grips the reader, not allowing a moment's peace of mind until the end.

Regan achieves the near-impossible, by not only taking the reader into the victim's mind but also forcing us to understand that most incomprehensible of creatures: the pliant victim.

Yes there have been real cases of victims who comply with their captors and yet retain a desire for freedom. We read news stories about them occasionally and discuss them over the dinner table, throwing around journalistic pop-psychology phrases like "Swedish Syndrome" or "authority transference." But how many of us really understand them? Regan's skill as a novelist is to grab the readers by our smug, self-satisfied lapels, shake us with the outraged fury of one who understands the frustration and anger of the victim and make us realize what it is like to be ground down by years of abuse and captivity.

Perhaps the most amazing thing is that this is a debut novel. The writing shows a maturity and control that many far more experienced writers lack. The characters - even the minor ones - are well-developed and three dimensional. The story takes some interesting twists and turns, yet never strays from the plausible. I cannot say that it was a pleasurable read - it was a painful story by its very nature and Regan doesn't pull her punches. But it was an impressive and compelling read. As a reader, I like to think that I am more cerebral than emotional, but this book brought out a whole plethora of emotions in me as I felt, in turn, sympathetic, angry, at times confused and frequently curious and mentally aroused by my desire to discover how it would pan out in the end.

At the age of 15 Claire is abducted off the street. For ten years she lives with her abuser. For a good part of that time he keeps her locked up and abuses her in ways that were tough to read and imagine anyone having to go through. Claire suffers not only physical and sexual abuse but the psychological trauma he puts her through is scary. She tries to escape but eventually gives up after several failed attempts, not because of what he does to her but because when that stops working, he controls her in ways that are unimaginable. Often without even touching her. After about five years, she starts to gain some freedom. She can even leave the ramshackle house he is keeping her in but she always returns. Daily she struggles with coming to terms with what he has done to her and all that she has endured - how and when will it end. Over the years she tries to reach out to people hoping that someone will let her family know she is alive. The consequences of her doing that are so beyond her imagination that she soon learns he will never let her go. One of the people she reaches out to, in a last ditch attempt to be found, is Connor.
Connor is a detective who meets Claire in a bar one night. There is an instant connection between them. They spend a platonic night together and much to his disappointment she is gone in the morning but she leaves him her home address. To his surprise he discovers that the woman he met was abducted ten years before. To prove it's her he has her DNA ran through the data base and finds out it is Claire Fletcher he met. Now the journey begins, as to why she isn't coming home. Where is she. And who has her. Fearing that she has put his life in jeopardy, Claire contacts him again, telling him to protect himself and to forget about her. He wants to set a trap, he wants the man to come after him. He thinks he's prepared but when the abductor is able to knock him out and tie him up, he realizes he has underestimated the man's skill, determination and his sanity.
Claire gets to the point she doesn't really care anymore so she stands up to the man who has made her life hell. He does not take that lightly and makes her pay in ways she can't imagine. It's not until she realizes that she's not his only victim that she vows to save the life of another girl and to ensure he pays for all he has done to her and every other girl.
It is a book that I will remember for a very long time. Lisa has woven an incredible story. It is a must read. I am absolutely looking forward to her next book, Aberration.

The two POVs in the story work well as you get to see the story from two different perspectives. I also liked the flashbacks and how the story revealed itself from two ends. You get the story from the point in time when she is abducted and from the time she meets Connor, who will stop at nothing to find her. You slowly learn more about Clair...more

Fast paced and entertaining in a gut-wrenching "this is the worst and best of humanity" sort of way. I liked the switch form 3rd to 1st, very effective. I'm not sure I would have understood Claire fully without the story from her POV as well. Connor and Claire are both likeable and relate-able characters and they are easy to root for. The action keeps you reading even when the emotions run dark. Some of the torture/rape scenes were difficult to read, because of the subject matter, not the writing.

There are three main things I loved about reading Finding Claire Fletcher:

One - this story drives you to keep reading. I sat down to read 20 pages, 150 flew by before I realized what happened. The story and characters draw you in and keep you interested. Regan does a great job of never telegraphing where she's going. You may have an idea of how this story will end, but you have no idea of how it's going to get there. I don't want to give anything away, but there are all sorts of little surprises and interesting scenes I didn't expect from the description of the book. I'm anti-spoiler so I will let you wonder what they are.

Two - The story was so well thought out. The plot was intricate going into various backgrounds, times, lives and through it all you felt it was connected and even the flashbacks had a sense of immediacy. The police procedures made sense and were frustratingly slow, which fits the story well. When I say frustrating, I don't mean in terms of reading, I mean in terms of how it effects the characters. The details of the abduction were well done. The way they switched homes, their day to day existence, the kidnapper's ability to keep Claire in check were all well done. Even in the mundane moments with her kidnapper, sharing a meal for instance, I found myself saying, "WTF?". Regan does a great job of never letting the reader forget what a creepy situation Claire is in and has been in for a decade.

Three - Every character in this book was a person. This large cast of characters were completely fleshed out. Boggs and Stryker were their own men and their pairing (detectives) let you see much about them and about Connor as well. Without giving away plot, Tiffany is an extremely interesting character. I could have read about her all day. The scene with Carolyn and her nephew was my favorite. I've been thinking about that scene since I read it. I want to make a movie based on that scene. So much there. So creepy and weird and neat and strange. Really, a novel on that moment would not be enough.

I started this review by giving it 4.5 stars but got so excited while talking about my favorite parts that I switched it to 5! Also, I'm not a thriller reader and wasn't sure if I would like this book, but I truly enjoyed it.(less)

I thought this was simply brilliant!
Little nuggets of the truth are slowly revealed until you reach the nightmarish conclusion!
I started reading this novel before Amanda Berry and two other women escaped after enduring 10yrs of abduction. And what is this story about?, a woman was abducted and has been missing for 10yrs!
Even though this is a work of fiction, it gave me some insight into how they are trapped both psychologically and physically.

The opening and premises are indeed, in short, amazing. A down on his luck detective. A mysterious meeting at a bar. It was all so secretive, seductive, smoky and noir, but sweeter and more romantic rather than the traditional femme fatale.

My god, where to start? this book is one of the best book i have read in such a long time, maybe the best. the quick action of the plot holds you captive until the end. Finding Claire Fletcher is an excellent debut novel. I normally read romance, so I wasn't sure how I would like this crime suspense, but I was pleasantly surprised. I fell in love with Claire and Connor from the start, and there was enough romantic elements to satisfy hopeless-romantic-me.

This was the May selection for the Goodreads group, Psychological Thrillers. I read it on my nooks. It was about another monster who preys on young girls, but there was a softening quality, so that it didn't just seem like sensationalism. Lisa Regan's excellent writing in "Finding Claire Fletcher" is a true page turner. She touches on the grounds of child abduction and what it is like for these children and then how it is to be reunited with their families. Her characters are strong and believable and they will fill you with emotions that will rock you. The subject of the book is a little bit difficult to read, but totally well worth it. Highly recommended for all readers!

Finding Claire Fletcher contains so many secrets it is hard to review with no spoilers, so I will part ways with the story here and say this. You open this book expecting suspense, you close it with a whole new look on life. No more will you pass by the abducted child posters and not look at them with interest, no more will you see a young girl on the street and not wonder where is her mother and does anyone care about her and no more will you ever think “not my child.” Claire Fletcher is every child and Lisa Regan has told her story with respect and dignity. I can’t name one seasoned author who could have told this story with as much precision, emotion and well thought out story line or pulled it off as gracefully as Ms. Regan. If you love suspense this book is a must read, but more importantly if you love children this book is a must read. Kudos on a well told story Ms. Regan, I’ll be back for more.

A first-rate thriller that draws you completely into the tortuous existence led by Claire, held captive by a deranged criminal for ten years. This was a completely absorbing read, told so well by Regan that I felt I was right there watching the action unfold. It is brutal at times, but that would be the reality of such a situation. Excellent! I've had trouble finding the words to describe how great this book is. That's why it's taken me over a week to write this review.
Not to sound cliché but this book had me from hello. The first chapter is short, but extremely powerful and you won’t be able to put it down after reading that brief look into Claire’s life. I was drawn in completely and had trouble concentrating on anything else while reading it.

This was a book I was hooked from the very begining! Wow, Claire is an amazing woman! What she went through at the hands of that sicko! This was a wonderful written book that I turned page after page to find out what was going to happen! I went through all kinds of emotions because it truely makes you think about all missing child out there! Lisa Regan has away of writing that makes you feel like you are in the story and it seem! I can't wait to read more by Ms. Regan!

Riveting. Suspenseful. Gut-wrenching. Heartbreaking.

And I could NOT put this book down. If there was an opportunity to give a book more than 5 stars, this surely rates more.

Being abducted and held by a sexual deviant, Claire is held a virtual and emotional prisoner by her captor. The author creates in her character a realistic personality with an undiminished tenacity to survive despite her circumstances.
