This is an example of very tedious military fiction, with an axe to grind. It is the story of the Battle of the Bulge (known as the "Ardennes Offensive" in Germany) from the American point-of-view. Its purpose is to suggest that the battle could have been contained or avoided, if the pencil-pushers at base had been more concerned about men's lives than about impressing their superiors.
