Tamera Will Wissinger (Goodreads Author)
Using a wide variety of poetic forms – quatrains, ballads, iambic meter, rhyming lists, concrete poetry, tercets and free verse –this debut author tells the story of a nine-year-old boy’s day of fishing. Sibling rivalry, the bond between father and son, the excitement – and difficulty -- of fishing all add up to a day of adventure any child would want to experience.

Sam is super excited to go fishing with his dad. He begins preparing the night before by digging night crawlers and checking his tackle box. Wait a minute...his tackle box is full of princesses and perfume! Lucy, his little sister has obviously been messing around with his stuff. You can imagine his dismay when she gets up the next morning and begs their father to take her fishing too. Sam knows the trip is ruined now. Sure enough, Lucy makes a lot of noise and even sings to the fish! Yet someho...more
This was such a fantastic book that my 6-year-old and I wanted to read it in one sitting! (We settled for two--it was bedtime after all) The poems were really lovely and nicely constructed. Each one was labeled with the type of poem, which gave my daughter (and me!) a great and non-intrusive lesson into the wide variety of poems out there in the world.

GONE FISHING is a wonderful rhyming story about a boy’s fishing trip. The story is told using a wide variety of poetic forms, which is perfect for conveying the emotions of the characters. I particularly enjoyed the snappiness of ‘A Fishy Spell’.
The poetry was humorous and charming, and well-written. The story was playful and light-hearted. The illustrations fitted perfectly – black and white line drawings reminiscent of Quentin Blake.

This was a fun, fantastic verse novel. It would be a great addition to any upper elementary/middle school school teacher's library. Aside from telling the tale of a father/son fishing trip that's unexpectedly crashed by a little sister, this brief novel gives excellent explanations of the various poetic forms and figurative language techniques that it employs. Entertaining and accessible, I can see using this novel to introduce a poetry unit. I could also see it being read prior to a prose novel...more
Gone Fishing is a delightful book that not only will entertain young readers with a compelling storyline, but will also introduce them to various forms of poetry. The basic story, formed around a sibling rivalry and a fishing trip, will be familiar to readers and also enough of an adventure to be exciting. All of the important elements of a fishing trip: the early start, the quiet on the lake, the waiting for a fish, the jealousy of watching someone else catch a fish first, and the joy of the tu...more
My second novel in verse and a delight to tackle.. not that it means it is a hard read, just wanted to use a fishing term to describe what a great catch this book is! The characters are delightful and little Lucy is my favorite. The poems, rhymes, verse used in this book are many and varied and each one charms you in its own special way.

What a wonderful book! A boy and his father go fishing, and little sister tags along in this transitional novel written as a series of poems. The topic, text, and ink cartoon illustrations are perfect for 2nd and 3rd graders. Each poem is done in a different style, which is specified under the poem's title (quatrain, couplets, concrete, free verse, etc.). At the end of the book is a poetry glossary, with one paragraph definitions of each type of poem. Great for teachers doing a poetry unit, but...more
Gone Fishing is three books in one. Not only is it an entertaining and heart-warming sibling tale, it’s a novel in verse. Younger readers have needed one for years, since most novels-in-verse are aimed at teens. To top it all off, teachers will love the “Poet’s Tackle Box” which explains the forms and techniques used in the book. The poetry in Gone Fishing is so well done, it doesn’t get in the way of the story. As I read the beginning to some second and third graders today, they tugged the book...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this little book of poems that tell a story about a fishing trip from three points of view: Sam, the brother, Lucy, his annoying little sister, and their dad. Sam is so excited the night before his fishing trip with his dad. "Not Mom, not Grandpa, not Lucy...Just Dad and me." Lucy, however, has different ideas and talks her dad into letting her go, too. Matthew Cordell's illustrations show every dismayed and disappointed feelings in the expressions on Sam's face as he helps...more
This one's a catch! It's a fish story - about a boy, his dad, and GASP - his younger sister (who worms her way in) - on a fishing day out on the lake. It's told in (often) humorous verse. Perfect for reluctant readers, voracious readers, fisher-people, and poetry lovers -- this book may turn kids (and adults) into poetry lovers. The poems are labeled as to what type they are -- and there's fabulous back-matter which teachers with LOVE. Grades 3 - 6 / younger if used as a read aloud. FIVE STARS.
This is a story of a boy who is excited about a fishing trip with his dad until the boy's younger sister is invited along too. The story is told entirely through poems. The story is easy to follow, and the author included a wide variety of poems and poetic devices. The best part (for me, the teacher) is the notes in the back the author calls the "Poet's Tackle Box". She explains each type of poem and poetic device. Clever writing style and fun story.
I loved this book right from the first poem--hunting night crawlers for a fishing trip. Brought back memories from long, long ago! Did the same thing in our yard after a summer evening rain storm. Love that this family fishing trip, complete with a little sibling rivalry, is told in verse...32 poetic forms in all. This book could really be a handbook to use with student writers.
What a gem of a book Tamera Will Wissinger has written! In 41 short poems, she tells a whole story--a boy who looks forward to some alone time fishing with Dad; his pesky sister who highjacks the trip; and the way they grow closer together as a result. The bonus is that Wissinger accomplishes all this by creating an astonishing number of different forms of poetry. The forms include a double dactyl, haiku, free verse, ode, and limerick, among several others. Each poem is labeled with its form, an...more
Debut author Tamera Will Wissinger has won the prize for catch of the day with this title. I am a huge fan of Matthew Cordell's books and illustrations. In this title they couldn't be better.

This is adorable! An early middle-grade novel in verse of a family fishing trip! The author breaks up the poems in different styles, noting at the top of each poem what style it is (free verse, tercet variation, haiku.) I imagine every teacher will be using this as a guide book for poetry in their classrooms, and the kids will love it!

Carrie's Review:
Gone Fishing was a very cute book! It is a collection of poems about a fishing trip. The great thing about this book is it promotes poetry and explains what kind of poem each is at the end. I think adults and children would enjoy this book, especially because the poems are about a great activity - fishing.

A story composed of 40 poems, each a different form, and each told either by dad, Sam, or Lucy, and sometimes a combination of these three who spend a day on a lake, trying to catch fish. Includes a glossary of poetic terminology, a listing of poetic form, and a bibliography. Considered juvenile fiction, but individual poems can be used in preschool storytime.
The variety of poems used made this seem less like a "book of poems" and more of a story told in a unique way. The use of multiple voices was a benefit, although most of the poems were told by Sam, the main character and older brother.
A great sibling story.
A great sibling story.
Since I mostly read YA, I didn’t know how I would like this MG book, but I absolutely loved it. Gone Fishing explores many different types of poetry in a fun and interesting way. I love how the story unfolds, jumping from one type of poem to another. The illustrations work perfectly reminding me a bit of Roald Dahl’s. This book will definitely get younger children interested in poetry.

I adored this book. Not only did it make me miss my wonderful grandfather, but it also made me want to immediately enroll in a poetry course (which I haven't done in a long time). With GONE FISHING, Tamera Will Wissinger manages to make poetry accessible not only to children but to adult readers who are interested in exploring the forms beyond the sweet story of a fishing trip that looks like it's going be ruined for our young fishing enthusiast. Fortunately, looks can be deceiving, and the surp...more
It's a novel in verse with the added bonus of teaching the forms of poetry used. Really well done.

Tamera Wissinger was inspired to write this novel in poems after writing "Night Crawlers," a poem that stemmed from her fun childhood memories of night crawler hunting with her mom and dad before fishing trips. A graduate of Hamline University’s MFA Writing for Children program, Tamera and her husband share their time between Chicago and Florida. Tamera is represented by Michelle Humphrey of The M...more
