There are a lot of mysteries - cozy, thriller, police procedural, law and more. For a reader like me who want an interesting and intricate plot, characters that are believable and good writing, it's always fun to find an author who is able to do all this so well. Kristina Ohlsson is one of those authors that I've added to my growing "follow" list. This is the second of her books that has been translated and published in the USA. In "Unwanted" we are introduced to the special team that has been s ...more

Silenced is a perceptively written, captivating crime thriller by Swedish author, Kristina Ohlsson.

On Midsummer’s Eve in 1993 a teenage girl is violently assaulted in the garden of her family home in Sweden. Fifteen years later, a man is killed in a hit and run and a well-respected couple is found dead in a suspected murder suicide. The two daughters of the dead couple are M.I.A and Alex Recht’s federal investigation unit are trying to piece together how these two crimes are related and track d

Beso

Klasse Plot, hochaktuelles Thema, sehr spannend.
The only reason I gave this book even one star is that I did finish reading it. The characters are unbelievable, the plot and the many poor subplots are unbelievable, the writing is amateurish and disjointed.
What a disappointing ending, after being strung along for 300+ pages. It's a non ending, really, after so many of the chapters vaguely referencing characters with no names. Parts of the book were suspenseful, but the story was diminished by the fact that too many facts were with held. There's mystery and then there's vague messiness. This one was messy and disjointed. And parts were unbelievable, particularly the woman stranded in Bangkok. No one has that power and reach to mess with that much t ...more
Silenced by Kristina Ohlsson is the second installment of a detective series. The criminal element was much more complex in this novel than her previous one. I enjoy her characters. They are all tragically flawed, whether they are the good guys or the bad. She spends time really flushing out the personal story line of each of her main detectives even though it may not have anything to do with action storyline. I find this compelling. No detective is going to be unaffected by their personal lives ...more
Well written especially in the unraveling plot that is deftly kept together; always leaving the reader's knowledge blurred so as one is unable to bring the plot into sharp focus.
As in the earlier book the humanity of the detective team is portrayed, their efforts are all consuming, but could they have done more?
The novel stays true to this modern reality. Unlike a keen ear,or magnifying glass to upturn that strategic clue, the reality is all about questioning the right people, hoping the witness

This one was a twist. This is the 2nd Fredrika Bergman and Alex Recht book and I like were Ohlsson is going as a writer. The story was filled with twists and confusion over who was the victim and who was the murder. It was a quick read, that kept my attention to the end (so much so, i didn't want to start dinner).
Murder note: The story begins with a flashback. the cases begin when two a priest and his wife are found dead in their flat. Originally ruled a suicide the police have some questions.

This was better than the last, but not by a lot. We no longer have the annoying 'she's incompetent because she's a woman' cliche, thank gawd!

In its place we get ... stupidity. I just wanted to shake them. It was so obvious what was going on. I had many moments where I wanted to scream at the characters. I mean, a new human smuggling ring that costs significantly less than what it usually is and these people tell those they smuggle in to not tell anyone they're here? That should've been right at

I liked this even more than The Unwanted which was good. That introduced us to the police team and all their little idiosyncrasies and this one was better for knowing them all, I thought. Then learning more about them all as this investigation progressed.
There were some horribly sad happenings in this story, though. However, I really look forward to the next in the series.
I was very happy to see the Americanised spellings had been dropped in this translation though at odd times we still had the o

Kristina Ohlsson has written another wonderfully satisfying character-driven mystery and police procedural that takes place primarily in Stockholm, Sweden. Her characters are fully fleshed out and provide as much to the novel as the plot line.

The book opens up with the rape of a young woman in a field of flowers. It then jumps a number of years to the deaths of Jakhob Ahlbin, a minister, and his wife. Jakhob had been involved in controversial refugee affairs and had been receiving threatening no

Kristina Ohlsson is a political scientist and has previously worked for the Swedish Security Service and as a Counter-Terrorism Officer, and she writes really good crime fiction.
This being the 2nd instalment to the 'Fredrika Bergman and Alex Recht' series, I was instantly absorbed into familiar territory (having read the first novel) and I once again, really enjoyed the journey it took me on.
BUT I found that on this occasions narked me somewhat that 100 or so pages from the end, you the reader h

This was a Goodreads win. The author was new to me but I'm sure we will be reading more of her books. This was real well done. The author held my interest from the beginning to the the end. I have always enjoyed a good mystery and this was one. The characters seemed so real I had visuals of what they looked like. Will keep my eyes opened for other books of hers.
One summer while out in a meadow bordering her family’s house picking flowers, her life is forever changed. A strange man takes her innocence – forever changing her and her family’s life.

The team is back together and on a new case. Fredericka is into the later portion of her pregnancy, Peder has separated from his wife, and Alex is noticing that his relationship with his wife is changing unexpectedly. In the midst of all their personal goings on, two cases have hit their desks: an older couple h
Good thriller set mainly in Stockholm (the episode in Bangkok was truly unnerving). The team remains the same, and despite the problems of all of them seems to be making it work. The story is a complex one involving asylum seekers and a radical clergyman who has tried to help them over the years: he has now been found dead, apparently by his own hand, along with his wife. One of his daughters has also recently been reported dead and the other cannot be found. Slowly the links are made with other ...more
Kristina Ohlsson is a great mystery writer. She continues to develop the characters created in Unwanted. Alex Recht and Fredrika Bergman work better together than before. Maybe it is because Fredrika is now pregnant, assuring the reader that there will be a follow-up novel with Fredrika and her baby. We don't know if the father will be a part of their lives. A leading advocate for immigration to Sweden is murdered along with his wife. At first it appears as suicide and there are differing opinio ...more

What is it about Scandinavian writer? They seem to be able to create such an atmosphere that you can feel yourself there. Kristina is one such author, and 'Silenced' was the first of her books that I have read. It most certainly won't be the last.
There were multiple threads throughout the book, and the reader knows that they must all be connected in some way, must all come together in the end.
For instance, how can a girl in Baghdad who is being stripped of her identity (by whom?) be connected wi

I finished this book several days ago, but pondered what to say in a review: which is the same feeling as I had about the book when I read through it. For starters, I want to mention that I thoroughly enjoyed Ohlsson's first novel "Unwanted" and really looked forward to diving into another story of the same caliber. For the record, I offer the attention and open-mindedness to stories from foreign countries set in foreign places with a fair considerstion to the presence of so many names and place ...more

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Kristina Ohlsson’s Unwanted (grippy!), I immediately jumped into this story, expecting the same thrilling plot. I did get what I want, only less exciting, though the prologue provided a strong foundation for the intriguing, complex mystery to follow.

After focusing on domestic abuse in previous book, the author turned our attention to the asylum seekers, the people who helped them, as well as those who detested them. The mystery started with a series of seemingl
A good new mystery series to have in my back pocket. A compelling story with interesting main characters.

My only gripe: It doesn't appear that the book was translated by a second party- I'm guessing Ohlsson originally wrote it in Swedish and then again in English. However it was translated, though, there a few English expressions and idioms that are quite dated. We just don't say "Good grief" and she "pulled the wool over her eyes" much in normal conversation, especially in 2008 when the book is

This book took me 12 hoyrs to read. It's THAT GOOD. Fredrika is a pregnant detective with lots of flashes of brilliance. Peder is a detective known rather for crude jokes at female coworkers' expense, but they'll let him go to a special sensitivity class since regardless of how dirty the job, he gets it done and done right. Alex leads the team in a tough case involving family secrets, rape and murder--all part of a coverup for something sinister. SHIVERS!!! it's like Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, ...more
Loved this book. I really liked the first book in the series "Unwanted" but this second one was much better in terms of intricacies of the plot and its resolution as well as character developments. I particularly like that none of the characters in this series are too clever or too perfect. They all have weaknesses and, hence, they are pretty relatable.

The plot was pretty complex and, while a seasoned reader of this genre may be able to guess certain aspects of the mystery, I think the plot twis
This is the third Ohlsson mystery I have read, and once again, I enjoyed in spite of not having read these in order. But as before, while I like the main "detective" characters, there seemed to be too many prospective perpetrators and too many "extras" - I had a hard time keeping them straight in my mind. And as the mystery wrapped itself up at the end, it seemed a bit like a knot of tangled yarn - hard to unravel, hard to figure out exactly who had done what. On the other hand, I could not stop ...more
