The Legacy of Lord Regret by Sam Bowring (whom I interviewed http://www.darkmatterfanzine.com/dmf/...) is high fantasy with black and white characters who are almost caricatures. While I prefer characters who are shades of grey (as in Sam’s first trilogy, apparently) these characters are interesting because when they kill one another they absorb the victim’s power – and part of their personality. Thus Sam’s characters are changing, and those changes aren’t just incidental as a result of the plot...more
A highly exciting novel from a fantastic storyteller, that kept me turning the pages till late into the night.
After a bit of a slow start, the book gets better the further along you read, until you get to the end with a cliffhanger that will have you wishing you had the next book right there ready to go.
I loved how we get the back stories of all of the eight wardens as they are brought back to life after being dead for the last three hundred years.

Isn't a dualogy refreshing? There's also no hiding the fact that I fancy the way the pair's spines form a striking, single silhouette image when placed side by side.
Onward -- to the content!
I was immediately struck by Bowring's writing style -- it is more fluid and modern, and less arduous and Tolkienesque -- having spent some time in the detail-heavy worlds of Rothfuss, Cooper and Canavan, of late, the contrast was marked and the relief was great. I needed me some Bowring, even if I am looking...more

I'm going to be honest with you here: I had forgotten exactly how mesmerizing Sam Bowring's writing is. I was hooked into this story moments after I began reading! The novel is equally driven by action and its characters, executed brilliantly by Bowring in his unique style. A wonderfully spun tale of magic, camaraderie and betrayal, The Legacy of Lord Regret sets up the Strange Threads duology beautifully, and I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel, The Lord of Lies, to bring this tale to (I'm sure) it...more
This is the first book that I've read from Sam Bowring, and I was glad that I requested this book from the library. I like his writing style, as it's not excessively detail heavy; very easy to read. The characters are interesting and the story flows well. I can't wait to read the sequel "The Lord of Lies". Not many authors choose to write duologies, so it's refreshing to see that one has done so. I would recommend this book to those who are on the lookout for new Australian fantasy authors.
Not a bad story, if you liked the movie 'Highlander'. I felt like I was reading a similar type script, with a set number of characters, risen among the mundane, who could absorbs another "power" if they were in close proximity when one of them were killed. Oh, and it seems only another with the "power" can kill them. Yeah, HIGHLANDER overkill. Overall though, the book wasn't terribly bad, and decently written. I started the next book (two-book series, as far as I know) just to find out how it al...more
I was lucky enough to be able to read this before it comes out in stores. I've never read Sam Bowring before but I am so glad Orbit Australia gave me the chance to. This book is amazing and I was hooked from the first page! Bowring writes in a way where he manages to ensnare you very easily into the story and he never lets go. Interesting characters that make you wonder where their allegiances lay collide with a well developed magic system and story, making the Legacy of Lord Regret impossible t...more
I was browsing for something to read when I came across this one, it sounded interesting and so I decided to bring it home with me - thank goodness I did!
I devoured this in the space of a lazy Sunday, writing is solid, not too flowery and the plot flows at a fast pace.
I'm looking forward to the final book and may have to check out Sam Bowrings other works.

Wow, I TORE through this book once I actually started reading. Luckily I have an awful cold, and thus a better reason than usual to just sit here reading all day.
I have a massive fascination for books dealing with the end of the world, whether during or after. I have always been even more interested in the concept of living in a dying world which is falling apart around you, but can't be said to be ending as of yet.
The setting for this book fits that. The world has been scarred by magic and the...more
