Kyle Miller is a rare breed. Though born to conservative parents and raised in small-town Oklahoma, Kyle realized young that he had to escape rural America. Now he's living in New York City, working as an ER doctor, and paying off his massive student loans. He's never been on a plane and never seen a movie, but he is worldly enough to recognize attraction when it smacks hi...more

2.5 stars. This story is written in the first person POV of Joseph, a super confident executive who works in the finance industry. He spies Kyle, a shy giant of a man, who has escaped his strict Oklahoma upbringing to work as a doctor in New York. When these two meet at a gym they immediately connect.

It was obvious this book was written by a guy. There are plenty of mentions of dick sizes and a constant running brash commentary from Joseph that became a little annoying at times. There's not a lo...more

From the excerpt at DSP: "And remember, I was a professor of penis, a connoisseur of cock, a devotee of dick, an epicure of erections. I had made it my life’s work to worship the male member. And what a member this one was." -Michael Murphy

I've got to read this book! Love this line :D

I think this could have worked out how the author wanted, if it had been edited and tightened up more. I can see where he was going with the storyline but it didn't quite work. There were some funny moments and it was cute in parts. The continuous inner musings and obsession with body parts (penis and nipples) from Joseph were over the top, annoying and unnecessary. It dragged the story down. If Kyle had been given a voice and opinion as well it would have held up much better. His POV w...more

Little Squirrels Can Climb Tall Trees is a rambling mess. I don't always mind ramblings (I love the way TJ Klune does it), but this was just so messy and pointless, and the writing is mediocre at the best.

- Interesting premise, but weak execution
+ The title was unique and sort of funny...

What a sweet and sexy romantic comedy! I loved Joseph's voice and inner dialog. My brain runs constantly too, producing the weirdest thoughts at the weirdest times, so I totally related. Seldom have I seen a literary pairing that fit as well together as Joseph (rabid tree squirrel) and Kyle (the redwood). The dialog was refreshing, realistic, and laugh out loud funny. I'm so glad no one was around the first time I read about the rabid tree squirrels! Major coffee spew on the keyboard!

I really hate it when I start to read a book and I can't finish it. I know authors put a lot of time, energy, and hard hard work into their writing, so for me not to be able to finish it saddens me, and that their effort was wasted on me.

I think there should have been better editing either from the author or from the person that got thier hands on it for final. No novel or novella should have more than 5, maybe 7, and I could still deal with 10 exclamtion points in the whole body of the work, no...more

What the effing heck?
This book starts out mediocre and ends up bad in a whole new way that I've never experienced before.

This is one of those tell you not show you stories where the 'witty' city boy meets the 'shy' country boy and through repeated bouts of sex convinces the tall, insecure country boy that he's just as hot and awesome as anyone else.
It should be cute, if predictable with it's homophobic parents and opposites attract plot, but then it runs screaming off it's rails into some mary-s...more

The novel starts in a phenomenal way and then maybe goes more on the average, but in any case it’s for sure a very funny and light romance, also romantic and sweet.

Joseph meets Kyle at the local gym and he immediately falls in lust for the god-like man: Kyle is tall, handsome, with a wonderful smile, clever and more than everything he is kind and sweet… the full package. Joseph would never guess a god like Kyle could be interested in an average guy like him, but it’s Kyle who asks him out the fi...more

I bought this on the strength of Tam's review and she pretty much sums up my feelings about it. At first I wasn't sure I was going to like it because the narrator is a bit manic, but after the first few pages I settled into the narrative and found the book to be sweet, cute and very amusing.

Kyle the 'tall tree' of the title was so lovely that I couldn't help warm to his naivety and charm. The way that Joseph (the squirrel in the title - but not a real squirrel!), worked to improve Kyle's self e...more

This was just an absolutely cute and sweet story. Joseph was just hilarious. It’s told as if he’s recounting the story (I know there’s probably a name for that style, but I’m too lazy to look it up) of how he met Kyle and how they got together. Joseph’s brain was a wondrous thing. It reminded me very much of a squirrel, leaping from idea to idea, getting totally distracted by Kyle and his amazing body, and he was quite aware of all this, but yet admitted that he was shy too, despite wanting to c...more

In *really* wanted to like this, but it didn't work for me. I love the "big country guy" and the "twinky city kid" story line, but I just didn't gel with this one. I read some reviews, but I dove in, ready to love it. Here were the issues:

- the dialogue. It was forced and just off. No one talks like that. I can't believe that Kyle is just going to announce that he has poor self esteem. Really? Let us discover that...this type of thing popped up a few times where the MC's just said things that we...more

This story is, pardon the pun, completely nuts.

I was initially thrown by the narrative. It is very stream of consciousness in character, and in first person perspective, so it was a bit daunting to begin with, but it matches the protagonist’s personality in such a great way that I was absorbed by it pretty soon. The story started out nicely, the protagonist meets his love-interest in the first chapter and they have a nice little relationship build-up. So far so good. Then both characters start b...more

This should have been a fun quirky light hearted read, sadly for me it turned out to be a long winded narrative of Joseph’s obsession with the male anatomy, especially nipples, with occasional side stories. Almost like the author had a bunch of ideas that he then pushed altogether to make one whole book.

For me this would of worked better if we had just had a short story on Kyle and Joseph meeting and falling in love, with the side stories added as quirky extras and not part of the main story...more

This book started out less than promising; it's written in Joseph's 1st person POV, and during the entirety of the first chapter, the reader has to endure what I can only describe as an ode to penises in general and to Kyle's cock in particular. At first, I was amused and then increasingly bemused as I followed the ramblings of a guy who was apparently so incredibly full of himself that he seemed to be unable to look beyond the tip of his own…well, dick, while we’re at it. The writing was fast-p...more

I quite enjoyed this 'nice and easy' story of self-discovery and romance. It is a straightforward and uncomplicated story about 'sophisticated wealthy city boy' who meets a 'nerdy (but very well educated) country bumpkin' who has never been on a plane, even though he swotted his way through Harvard. Stranger things have happened!!

This story made me laugh. I think in some places there was a little too much internal dialogue from Joseph and it would have been great to have some from Kyle, especial...more

What a lovely story. I found this by accident a few weeks ago when I popped on here and caught some of the statuses of an author that I follow (Eden Winters) who was reading it. I knew then that I had to read it. I finally found the time and I am so glad I did.

Kyle is an ER physician working in New York. He's a southern boy who was raised in a very conservative southern town. He's never flown on a plane and he's never even seen a movie. He doesn't have much other than substantial debt from gradu...more

At around the half way mark I realized I was skimming just to see if there was going to be anything more to this story than the Narrator's frantic inner dialogue. I've heard that men are nothing but walking hormones but I have to believe that they are capable of thinking of something other than penis and nipples once in a while. I loved the title. The blurb looked interesting. But we never got to know Kyle at all, other than when he blurts out that he has low esteem issues to a near stranger. I...more

This book is a bit of a dichotomy. In most of the book, there is a gentle love story between Joseph and Kyle. There is terrific character development and a strong bond between the two main characters. Then, about 150 pages into the book, these two wonderful loving characters, who have just agreed to get married take a trip to Hawaii.
Without any real foreshadowing, these two nice men get so drunk that they are unable to walk straight, and they end up with a third man, Mano, in their bed with the...more

This book is funny, it's quirky and I loved the rambling in Joseph's mind as much as I liked Kyle's innocence. Of course...not everything is realistic but hey, I never felt the book wanted to be taken serious. On contrary, I think the goal was to make me laugh...and that I did.
And I'm so going to reread Kyle's wonderful speech.

Yes, that book does have not a great amount of angst or problems. These guys actually talk and have fun together and they let you be a part of it.

I enjoyed it very much.

This was a little all over the place and could of used some tightening up. The beginning was good and I liked the plot, for the most part. I mostly liked the MCs, Joseph was funny, Kyle was a little bland.

I am giving this 3 stars because of the title and because I liked this quote...

“I was a professor of penis, a connoisseur of cock, a devotee of dick, an epicure of erections. I had made it my life’s work to worship the male member. And what a member this one was.”

I loved it! I laughed throughout the book, but the beginning was the funniest. The story is told by Joseph, who says the funniest things. The running joke is squirrel related, rabid tree squirrel actually. It didn't really feel like insta-love because the way the story is structured made me think more time had passed. However, it worked for these two. This is one of those books where I felt like I was there. I was a part of their lives. Highly recommend this one!

The beginning of this book is amazing. Super funny and different as it is written as a stream of conciousness. However as the relation between the two of them is established the writing changes to a more classical style as he describes the actions "squirrel" does to introduce Kyle (who has lived all his life in a extreme conservative lifestyle) to a more modern way of living (films, planes,...). Nonetheless I really enjoyed the book and it deserves four stars :)

Holy crap, all I can picture in my head about the main character is that he is a yappy little terrier dog.
I mean I love the exclamation point, I use it a lot on comments, but to use it this much in a published book? It’s a bit much, and it made me dislike the main character.
So it’s not that I hated this book, it’s just that if I ever met the main character of this book in real life I would probably want to punch him.
No thank you.

Little Squirrels Can Climb Tall Trees was such a sweet romantic book. I loved Kyle and Joseph as a couple and as individual characters. Kyle got my sympathy from the beginning and Joseph just won my approval by being such a good boyfriend to him.
The mix of humor with some sad/serious stuff made this book a great read. The beginning of the relationship was a bit rocky but I loved it more and more as they grew together. Kyle's mother was a character who I hated for a while I thought she was the bi...more

Joseph needed a sedative. I think I would have liked this more had it not been inside Joseph's head. I liked when things weren't working out like he planned with Kyle because there seemed to be more substance to him than the crazy horny guy. Kyle's coming out success bothered me and the scene with Mano was too much and kind of pointless.
Chris
1.5 stars. Extremely uneven but ultimately meh m/m romance set in NYC about a short and excessively exuberant guy who woos a much taller and rather naive doctor from Oklahoma. The biggest problems I had with the book were the ludicrous number of exclamation points and the tendency to go into excessive detail during scenes that didn't seem to belong in the book, then skim quickly over things that merited more detail.

I'm not a huge fan of the first person POV, but this was done well. I hesitated to read this one because of the poor reviews and lame title (my opinion). Overall it was a sweet story with some very funny moments and a lot of sex. 3.5 rounded up.

Who am I? I wish I knew. One of these days I need to decided what I want to be when I grow up.

I am a middle-aged man, born in the far reaches of upstate New York - parts that give the word "rural" meaning. Now I live in Washington, DC.

Recently, when I came upon one of those frightening milestone birthdays, I realized something that scared the crap out of me: there were more years behind me than...more
