Greig Beck gives me nightmares – but in a good way!
In This Green Hell he takes us deep into South America’s Paraguay. You can actually feel the heat and humidity and the claustrophobic sensations of the jungle all around.
Like most of his books, Beck starts with a historical point, like a myth or legend. Here it is the Jesuit missionaries in the late 1600s, and he gives us (his) insight into why some disappeared. Fast forward, and we then see how this affects his characters and events today.

I started this one right after I finished the second book in this series called Dark Rising. I couldn't wait to see if this series improved even further...and I wasn't disappointed.
Greig Beck has with This Green Hell given us an explosive Scientific Thriller, where jungle, bacteria and..something else...makes your head spin faster than a squirrel on a caffeine high.
The character development continues in the same pace as the other books, but in this one you get less background story than in the...more

I am so happy I got to read this book. It isn't supposed to be released in the US until August of next year which is bullshit considering it is out in Australia now. I have a friend who travels there all the time so I had her pick me up a copy.
Let me just say that the book was awesome but the ending was so open-ended.
The basic premise is that there is a serious biological outbreak in the amazon after digging for a natural gas deposit brings up bacteria that is unlike anything seen on this plan...more

A very enjoyable third book in the Alex Hunter series. Alex is sent to Paraguay when Aimee Weir's latest project unearths something unnatural that could mean the end of all human life, and it's something that even the Arcadian may not be able to fight.
My only complaint is the rather cliff hanger ending to the novel. I will have to get "black hills" when it comes out later in the year to see how it resolves. If you like action/adventure with a military and extraordinary events slant then these ma...more

Just finished This Green Hell the third book from Greig Beck and I can hardly wait for the next one. These books are exciting thought provoking and very readable. You are compelled to turn the pages as the story unfolds you want to find out what happens next it is so gripping. The books can be read in any order some characters go through all books and some come and go but there is always a thread for you to follow so you don't have to wonder who they are and where they fit in. If you haven't rea...more
This is the 3rd installment in the Alex Hunter series. There is a 4th one and it is not out yet. I read this book in one night because I couldn't put it down. I recommend this for anyone who enjoys military thrillers and or Michael Crichton, Rollins, etc. It's a hard book to classify, science fiction thriller, maybe? Or a sci-fi horror thriller? I don't know nor do I care. Greig Beck is a much underrated author and I am looking forward the 4th in this series; however, it will not be out until Au...more

Dr Aimee Weir, deep in the Paraguayan jungle, is on the verge of making a discovery that could change the world – a source of renewable energy from bacteria deep within the earth that produce natural gas from carbonates. When the samples are brought up though, the bacteria begins to feed on any carbon available – including human flesh. On top of that, an ancient evil has been disturbed and is gradually picking off the wo...more

3.5* out of 5. It would actually be closer to a four, but I can't bring myself to it for the nonsensical reason of it being - well - not exactly fine literature. Not that I knew I could be such a snob, but okay, I CAN. But I still LOVED this. It was so much fun, a romp in the jungle with a designed super-soldier against an alien species released from a cavern. What more could you possibly ask for on a Saturday night, accompanied with a nice glass of red wine? :D Highly recommended if you like th...more
I like this guy. His supersoldier is starting to crack. again, he writes with a touch of reality and now includes some of his research notes at the end, which i think is a good idea. some of his plot points make you think it's bullshit, but after reading and checking his sources my self, I now admire his work all the more. a little predictable, given his early work ( i could say formulaic but i'll wait til i've finished all three books before i make that call) but well worth the read.
What a great book.
I dont know what it is about the character Gonzales. But the second time i read this he really creeped me out.
Great follow up with Alex Hunter deep in the jungle and with an enemy that pushes him even beyond his own special capabilities.
I loved the writing. you could feel the jungle all around and the eyes of something bearing down on you.
well done.

Wow, this was exciting from start to finish! I love the realism in the theory and how convincing the possibilities are in this story. There was just enough mystery about the science of things that your imagination could fly.The characters were so real and rich in personality. I could see this book as a movie!
Third book in the Alex Hunter series, in which Alex Hunter, a supersoldier, travels to Paraguay to confront another otherworldly monster. The books have become a little formulaic, but I enjoy the formula. This one focused a little more on horror than on action. The first is still my favorite, but this was a fun read too.

Started yesterday…finished today - I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. This was an excellent book and another huge winner from Mr. Beck. What a great story with totally believable science and a very familiar set of characters that are easy to root for and cheer on. And…the "villain" in this book…WOW…a real bad guy!! Greig has a way of writing the story so that you are right in the action with the characters - the smells, the lighting, the clothes, the colors, the environment - you are in it when you read i...more

“Hell is not hot, or cold. Nor is it deep below ground, or somewhere in the sky. Instead it is a place on Earth filled with sucking bogs, disfiguring diseases and millions of tiny flesh-eating creatures.
Hell is a jungle, and it is monstrously green.”
