I really enjoyed this book! Beneath the Slashings is a work of historical fiction which tells the story of Grace, a young girl who's facing many struggles and changes in her life. As the book begins, Grace has already suffered many hardships and is looking forward to her life getting back to the way it used to be. She doesn't know that more changes are on the way and her entire world will be turned upside down. I loved the various personalities and mannerisms of the characters in this book. As G...more
I loved this book. I loved the characters, the setting, and the plot. This is what historical fiction should be, realistic and compelling. Not only did I find the setting fascinating, but the descriptions were so vivid I could almost feel the cold. I am sincerely grateful that I did not grow up in a nineteenth-century lumber camp. I had great sympathy for Grace being the only female in the whole camp, especially as a 12-year-old. I also sympathized with her father, who was trying to do what he f...more
Beneath the Slashings is the third and final installment in the Divided Decade Trilogy, which shows the American Civil War from three different angles. They all feature different characters and plots, united by the Civil War as a backdrop, so each can be read as a stand alone.
First off (even though it's probably quite cheesy), I'm from Michigan, and I myself write books in Michigan. This story is set in Michigan as well, so I enjoyed that. While I've never been particularly interested in the Civ...more

I'll be honest and say, that I wasn't anticipating liking this novel as much as I did. I'm not a big Civil War novel lover and the fact that this takes place just after the Civil War, I thought that it would be about that completely. It does in fact deal with some of the horrors of war and some lingering racism. Ha, racism, I'm not even sure if that's the right word. Second class citizen, I just don't even have the right word for what most of the men thought of the one lone black man that was in...more
As I was reading this book, I was reminded of my love of the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Beneath the Slashings is similar to those books, as it is set around the same era and it's told from a young girl's point of view. Grace is a girl to admire. Having lost her mother when she was six years old and then been separated from her father for three years while he served in the Civil War, she has had a lot of sorrow in her life and reasons to be afraid. When her Pa returns from the wa...more
I love Grace. She's full of spice and that's hard after all those years of war. She's had to learn about loss, regret, and sorrow. I imagined her very real as I read this super fantastic 'kid growing up' story. I think coming of age is overused people and should be banned from our vocabulary. Anywho, Grace has a twin brother named Sam and they move with their pa to a logging camp. Can anyone say action? Conflict? This story has it all. And Grace is in the middle of it. I also liked Pa. He had so...more
Beneath the Slashings by Michelle Isenhoff is the third book in a trilogy. The books in the series are loosely related. Still, I was worried that because I hadn’t read the others that I would be confused. This was not the case! It is definitely a book that can be read without reading the others in the series. Grace was unhappy through part of the book, and I wished I could have been her friend at the camp. Sometimes when we are being stubborn and not letting the fun in, we need someone to set us...more

Grace was so happy when she heard her Pa was finally coming home from the Civil War! Grace and her brother Sam had been staying with their Aunt and Uncle while their Dad was away. Her happiness soon turned to anger when she found out her Dad sold their farm and was taking them to live on a lumber camp in Michigan. Grace tried reasoning with Pa to not sell the farm, but it didn't work. She grows so angry with her...more

I found Beneath the Slashings to be a coming of age type story in which a young girl suffers loss, learns to deal with anger and disappointment, and learns how to deal with difficult emotional issues. I liked Grace and her brother. I found myself sympathetic with her father and the difficult decisions he had to make. The story itself was good, though not a light read. I really had to pay attention while reading to make sure I didn't miss anything, but the story flowed pretty well so it kept my i...more
A great story of the lumbering community in Michigan during the 1870's as viewed thru the eyes of Grace, the only female in a lumber camp during the winter, along with her twin brother Sam and her widowed father who has just returned home from the war.
It was interesting to see Grace struggle and grow through her resent of her situations in life, missing those who have been removed from her life due to various circumstances.
I must say with the title and the book cover, I was unsure what this book...more

About the book: Beneath the Slashings is the last book in the Divided Decade Trilogy, set in the Civil War. But the trilogy is a series of stand-alone novels, so you need not read the first two. Here’s a synopsis of Beneath the Slashings:
After four uncertain years of war, twelve-year-old Grace Nickerson is desperate to return to a sense of normalcy. But soon after her father returns, he sells the farm and drags the family to a lumber camp in Michigan’s northern wilderness.

I became a teacher because I never outgrew children's literature. Then I tried my hand at one--I was hooked! When I'm not teaching, writing, chauffeuring children, blogging, or reading, I like to garden and take road trips with my family, but not necessarily at the same time.
