Apparition is a hard core supernatural horror novel that is going to scare the hell out of you. This book has everything that you would want in a horror novel, a spooky house, ghosts and an evil entity that possesses parents and makes them kill their children. The story is about a a father named Shane and his two kids trying to build a new life after Shane’s wife Kari tries to kill their two kids. The family moves into a new home that has a dark past. Shane and the kids start to hear footsteps a...more
I started reading "Apparition" on a sunny weekend day... a bright and cheerful day that almost kept the insanity of this books subject at bay. Almost. Just one chapter in and I was hooked! Part of me was disgusted with the subject of the book-- as a mom, how could I not be? But, the more powerful urge to find out what was going to happen overruled all of my senses and as the book got deeper and bolder and more horrifying, my casual day reading turned into one long and terrifying night.

Apparition wasn't what I expected it to be. I think I went into it thinking that it would be a soft ghost story. Perhaps something sweet and almost innocent like "The Woman in Black". That wasn't the case, and I was delighted by it.
Apparition is a deadly book. Deliciously dark, with a few scenes that literally made my stomach turn. Ghost stories can give me a delightful shiver, but this book touched on something much more than that. Citing several true examples of parents that murdered their chi...more

Easily, Apparition is the most uncomfortable book I have ever read. There were times I considered not finishing it, but the writing is strong, the story line gripping, and I needed to know where this was going. I will warn you, this is not a story that is easy to read or easy to forget.
The prologues in front of each chapter gave the story the extra punch in the gut, the juxtaposition of truth and fiction creating the Gestalt of emotional turbulence that some parents face when dealing with their...more

Okay. <--this is me getting my thoughts together. Okay. <--still gathering those thoughts. I think I need to start out by saying that the subject matter here is dark. Very dark. As a parent, it's one of those horrible, creepy, awful subjects that give me the full-on shudders. It works beautifully as a horror story, don't get me wrong, mostly because it's SO disturbing. I mean, the idea that an outside force could infect a parent and force them to kill the thing they love the most... it's f...more
There were moments that I really enjoyed the intensity of the book, the psychological horror of it all; but there were also moments that were repetitive and superfluous. I enjoyed the transformation of the "apparition" and its description reminded me of a creature from a certain game (not saying to not give anything away.)
Collings did a great job at describing the emotional and stressed states the characters went through, in a unique point-of-view. It was worth the read, and I have mixed feeling...more

I kinda wish I hadn't given the last Michaelbrent Collings book I read five stars, because it might seem that I'm saying that this book is just as good as the last one. It's not; it's much, much scarier. (If Goodreads were one a ten-star scale, I'd give this one 9 of 10 stars, mostly because the fear factor started to drop as things began to make sense in the last fifth of the novel -- a very common problem with horror stories.)
I absolutely loved this book. I was turned off at first because of the child killer theme, but as I read, it was soo much more than that. It was about possession. It had a theory that was based on ancient legends, the child eater, which gave the book a nice twist. I fell in love with the characters and was rooting for them, though the ending was kind of sad. The Apparition had some beautiful writing especially when Shane describes the love and completeness of his family. It was also scary as hel...more
