In the wake of the 50 Shades of Grey phenomena, I was not surprised that Unzipped – by first time Aussie author Nicki Reed - started out terribly. The writing style was stilted and amateurish. But it got a lot better and eventually had a fantastic story and amazingly colourful characters. I did find the character relationships to be very unrealistic yet they ended up being deeply complex and held my interest. This book was marketed to me as erotica but I didn't feel it read as this. Modern erotica seems to be based on the domination of women by men (with lots of bondage and ridiculous contracts and not much love). I think Unzipped is a love story that has explicit sex scenes. The only difference is that the lover is a woman. Was it unrealistic? Yes, it had a lot of coincidences. But it was well written and the reactions of friends and family seemed realistic to me.
