I began reading this in a complete shroud of confusion. Nixie's father is dying, he tells her "go on, take the money and run" (hoo hoo hoo! TM Steve Miller Band) but ... why? Then there's these gangster types - or are they cops? I don't know. The author is being deliberately mysterious, I'm sure, but I don't even have the remotest of clues what is happening. I began reading this in a complete shroud of confusion. Nixie's father is dying, he tells her "go on, take the money and run" (hoo hoo hoo! TM Steve Miller Band) but ... why? Then there's these gangster types - or are they cops? I don't know. The author is being deliberately mysterious, I'm sure, but I don't even have the remotest of clues what is happening. Even a quarter of the way in, I was still floundering to understand the action. I think I'm in for a kind of fugitive-on-the-run cop thriller, but then it ends up being a story about spoiled rotten prima donna ballerinas.

Huh?

I settled in, finally, and began to despise the main character of Nixie and her boyfriend, Kolya, who seems to be the French equivalent of a d-bag. And only interested in Nixie for her seemingly endless supply of money. They are both immature brats. The money Nixie inherits from her dad quickly disappears with the extravagant lifestyle Kolya lives. Then, did I mention that Nixie has to marry an older (20-something) cop to be able to access her inheritance because she is only 17? He's in love with her, she's in love with Kolya and kind of in love with Morten, Kolya's in love with Lea, another ballerina, but also has feelings for Nixie. Nixie's mother, Maria, really muddles things up, and in the end, things fall apart but kind of come together. Does that make sense? Probably not.

The significance of the pearl in the title is a necklace that Kolya buys for Nixie (using Nixie's money! WTF!) that symbolizes his love for her even though they are both with other people. Yes, it is just an object (albeit an expensive one), but it is used throughout the story to show the love between Nixie and Kolya.

If you ask me, all these people need some tough love, therapy and a "real job." The moral of the story - I think - is that money can't buy happiness. No one in this story really seems to understand this, except maybe Morten (Nixie's husband-for-hire). However, without feeling truly grounded in this novel until maybe the second act, and with characters you just want to throttle, the message is lost for me.

AND - in re-reading the book summary, I just caught something. The genre is listed as "Young Adult." I'm sorry, but this is not something I would recommend to a teen. It's too dry, and the action is very adult as it all revolves around money or the lack thereof.(less)

I have to say that I thought this story was very beautiful and unique. The main characters are Nixie, Kolya, her boyfriend/lover & Morten whom she is pretty much forced to marry due to an inheritance she will receive from her father.

While the characters seem very grown up, they are young and foolish. Nixie decides she can not wait for her inheritance and so the way around it is to have an “older” guardian, well marriage to Morten fixes that.

Power, greed, and lust are all major themes consistant throughout this story as it emerses you into the world of ballet. Not the tutus, prima ballerinas, and serene choreography aspect, but the competition, financing, and grueling rehearsals it takes to create a successful dance company during the crash of the European stock market.

First of all, this is the first review request that I got, 2 days after I made my blog! Because of Kea Noli and her book Pearl Lover, I have decided to take book blogging seriously and boy it’s fun! If she hadn’t contacted me, I would’ve probably just stayed on Goodreads and do my reviews there. So glad you found my blog Kea! Basically she inspired me to continue this blog so I just wanna thank her :)

Okay, Pearl Lover, let me just tell you my first impression of this book. UNIQUE. The title, the characters’ names, the plot, they are all unique, well the whole book is! I’ve never read anything like it. It’s really a page-turner and did not bore me at all. The first chapter kind of confused me though, but you will understand what’s happening, just keep on reading. If you are into dancing, ballet to be specific, or if you like love triangles, then you should give this book a try!

Now, for the things that I disliked. I didn’t like the fact that the word ‘spat’ was used over and over. There were also one or two misspelled words in there, it didn’t bother me that much, but I thought I’d let you guys know because some readers are sensitive to that case. Also, I felt like after a page, it would go to a new topic, then after a page, a new topic would begin again. Basically page after page there’s a new thing going on. So for me, the story was great but it was choppy. As it said in the summary, the wicked witch in this book, is no other than Nixie’s (the protagonist) mother, Maria. I didn’t feel like she was that cruel. I felt like she was being overly over-protective. I thought the author could’ve put more examples or scenes of how harsh Maria was.

Overall I would read this book again and would recommend it to anyone! It’s something new and the idea is very original. A ‘very good’ rate for Pearl Lover.(less)

I found Pearl Lover to be a tad confusing at the beginning, so I’ll give you the basics:

-Nixie wants to be in full control of her inheritance.
-To do so, she must be in control of her guardian.
-If she marries someone over the age of 25, her husband will become this guardian. Otherwise, her guardian will remain her wicked mother.
-When I say ‘wicked’, I mean wicked. Nixie’s mother refuses to support her dream, which is to give new life to the Ballet Russes, a dead ballet company.

Needless to say, this premise is gripping. There comes a point in everyone’s when life when bad guys and inner conflict just become so… what’s the word? Predictable. Give me a clash with a villainous mother—maybe I’m just happy that this YA protagonist’s mother is actually alive—and a war with Europe’s failing economy any day of the week.

Especially when that war involves so many details on the ways of the world of dance. I don’t think that I’ve ever learned so many ballet terms and intricacies in my life than in the last 48 hours, and I used to dance it. (Yeah, that was before I figured out that I’m incredibly uncoordinated.) Now that I’ve finished Pearl Lover, I just feel so cultured.

Nevertheless, every novel has issues, and my number one with this novel is Nixie’s unashamed subserviency. She blatantly calls herself Kolya’s “Slave” on more than one occasion and declares herself “for the chauvinists”. These degrading comments, perhaps intended to be attractive to some, didn’t sit well with me; I found myself grimacing at them all too often. Miss Noli, I appreciate the gesture, but self-respect is actually a thing now.

Moving on, as I mentioned before, this is a really fast read. Although it takes place over the course of years, you’ll finish Pearl Lover in a matter of hours; the pacing is fast and the action is unfaltering.

Pearl Lover deserves 3/5 stars. For fans of living, breathing mothers, catty economies, and the complexities of ballet-dancing. Oh, and as a side note: this one is definitely for the elder group of young adults.(less)

It all start when Nixie father’s die. Her mother (Maria) wants to control her and the inheritance until she turns at least 21. Maria, a former dancer, is the typical wealthy woman, who only cares money and what people think.
Nixie has to marry a man she doesn’t love in order to be able to control her money and start her own ballet company. Kolya the dancer she really loves is the head of the company. And then we had Morten, a former police officer, who believes in love at first sight and is willing to do anything just to make Nixie happy.
The book moves very fast between the start of the company, their travelling across Europa, their struggle to perform and then to survive to the final end which I will not spoil. It’s a well-developed background for all the romance.
It also has a magnificent description about ballet. I’m a ballet fan and the dances and movements of the ballerinas are so well written that you could almost feel like you were at the theatre watching a play.
And now about the love triangle. The story between the three characters is intense to say the least. The idea of been able to love more than one person at the time is something that reader as well as the characters will have to accept or at least try to understand. Their feelings, choices and their attempts to do the right thing are very fun to read.
The book takes you in a roller-coaster of emotions. I changed from hating Kolya to like him and the same with Nixie but I loved Morten all the time. As for Maria she is the bad-guy of the book, is really hard to feel anything good about her.
I really liked Pearl Lover and I recommend it to all romance lovers out there.

First of all, I have to say I adore the cover; it's exactly how I would picture Nixie, the main character. The story itself is definitely interesting, but in the beginning there wasn't quite enough setting and character description for me. As the story developed, however, I did become invested in the characters, especially Nixie. I really grew to love her!

Maria, Nixie's mother, was never much of a mother and seemed selfish. I truly believe she only married Nixie's father for his money, and she never questioned where it came from; she just wanted to spend it and live in luxury. Maria is just horrible in my opinion!

I found it really strange that Nixie's father told her to take her money and run so her mother wouldn't get it. Wouldn't the mother get control of it anyway since Nixie was only 17 and a minor? And Nixie does not seem like she's 17--she's probably the most mature character in the book (except for Morten). She's more like a 30 year old. Nixie's "boyfriend" Kolya, is the opposite of her in maturity. He's childish, throws tantrums, and overall doesn't care about anyone but himself. I never believed for a second that he loved Nixie--once again, it was about her money that he wanted to start up a Russian ballet company. I really don't know what she saw in him. Their common interest in ballet? They're both dancers. I became really protective of Nixie as you can see. :)

Nixie, though seemingly mature in character, is frustratingly naive and cannot see that Kolya is using her. She gave up her dreams for him. The marriage of convenience to Morten seems like more of a real relationship than the one with Kolya, although I have a problem with Morten falling in love with her at first sight when he didn't even know her. He's allowing Nixie to use him, and so I felt for him, too. I didn't believe Morten was in love with Nixie because he said it happened at first sight, and that really isn't realistic. I think it's more like lust at first sight, not love. I did believe, however, that he fell in love with her over time.

As the story unfolded, I was desperate to find out how it would end and was definitely not disappointed. This novel has an ending I never saw coming and was completely satisfied with! I'd reread this book and will be highly recommending it to others. :)(less)

When I began Pearl Lover I thought I was getting a cute little love story about an Italian ballerina who fell in love with an undesirable Russian and while that is true the ending was more than I bargained for.
