"You invest in manufacturing. Why, specifically?”

“I like to build things.”

As of the time of writing, more than ten million copies of E L James’ “Fifty Shades of Grey” have been sold worldwide. Whether you find this notion inspiring or terrifying, there’s no escaping the fact that, as literary events go, “Fifty Shades of Grey” is at least...significant. And books that are.....more

I have resisted the urge to experience the 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon - if I want to read porn I know a good site that does what I need it to do without having to buy an ebook ;) - but I did come across Cassandra Parkin's blog post "50 things that annoy me about 50 Shades of Grey" and found it very entertaining. In the article Parkin basically rips apart EL James' writing style, proving that (a) this is a really badly written book (b) her characters are about as unrealistic as they could possi...more

Cassandra Parkin's lampoon of the megaselling 50 Shades of Grey was something that I picked up after hearing dozens of people singing its praises, citing it as illuminating for both those who had and had not read E.L. James's book. My wife read all three of the 50 Shades books and though her feet shuffle somewhat when she admits it, she became a fan. Initially I bought the send-up for her, thinking she might enjoy it and hoping to read it after her so we could discuss the differences in reading...more

While I would never recommend anyone actually buy 50 Shade of Grey & read it (if, God forbid you feel you HAVE to read it, please borrow it from a friend or the library), I will say I'm now glad I did read it. Seeing as how I can't UNREAD it, at least it made Lighter Shades of Grey that much more hilarious. 50 Shades has definitely become an either "you love it or you hate it" kind of book, so I'm not surprised that some people don't care for this one. But for those of us who were mortified...more

So far... it's not really that good. I realize that the book is meant to pick apart Fifty Shades of Grey chapter by chapter, but seriously - how many times can the author call Christian Grey stupid (and that's all within chapter 1!!)?! It might be a struggle to get all the way through this book. Good thing it's a borrowed book from the library and not one that I paid money for.

Update once finished reading:
Well, I made it through... and it did finally get better, but I'm still glad it was a borro...more

I didn't get past the first ten pages, so perhaps this gets more interesting, but all that was just play-by-play snark, and not nearly as funny or insightful as Jennifer Armintrout's. And this sort of thing plays much better in a blog than in a book pretending to be actual literary criticism.

Absolutely adored this book. I would actually recommend reading this book to people rather than Fifty Shades of Grey, which was all right, but doesn't deserve the hoopla surrounding it.

This book is funny, well thought out and brilliantly written. You don't need to have read Fifty Shades of Grey to understand it.

Read this book, and I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Well written with great attention to detail. Made me laugh out loud and often nodding in agreement to the writers breakdown of Fifty Shades Of Grey. I still enjoyed reading the original series, but did find it grating a second time. I did wonder how many 'oh my's ' there were in the first book. Loved the psychopathic study at the end, genius.

Definitely one for people who have read Fifty Shades of Grey and feel it is terribly flawed as a piece of literature. There are a lot of laugh-out-loud moments, though I am kind of disappointed that a lot of things that genuinely irked me about the book were not mentioned. But I guess it would have become an encyclopedia if everything made the cut.

When teachers go back to school after a break, laughter helps them get through. This book was fun and did cause me to laugh out loud. I was not a fan of 50 shades of grey but I finished the series because I kept hoping it would get better. It did not but this book helped me work through the embarrassment of admitting to reading those others.

Loved the story, but the erotic side of the triology after a while bored me to tears, the romantic story and the escapism into a different life style, ie a wealthy hero etc was entertaining and made me long to be in her shoes!

Ok, even though I loved The Fifty Shades books, I just had to read this after reading Cassandra's blog.

I found this book laugh out loud funny. Definitely recommended to all (whether you loved Fifty Shades or hated it)

Not getting all of the hype over the 50 shades phenomenon I really appreciated this breakdown of the 50 shades book - it addresses most of the issues that I had with the book.

This book said basically everything I was thinking when I read Fifty Shades of Grey, only with much more wit than I could have managed.

This is so much better than the real thing! I have wanted to do to several books what this woman has done to 50 Shades! HILARIOUS!!

This is far better than the book it is analysing. It mirrors how I felt while reading it precisely. Except, y'know, funnier.

I read all 50 Shades books and enjoyed the first but was annoyed with the next 2 and so wanted to find others who also felt the writing was horrible & repetitive. Her blog had ne laughing out loud and arguably her analysis of the first chapters are her best. I read the book on a flight so was easily entertained
