Shelves: great-book

I received an ARC of this story in exchange for a fair review.

I love stories that will carry me away and get me so wrapped up in what is going on that I forget that I am reading a story. Fortunato has done this for me. "The Sin Collector" was a fantastic book, but I feel that in "Thomas" she has created a depth of character that made me feel deeply for the situations portrayed. Thomas is a much fuller person in my mind now, with a fascinating story all his own.

I received this ARC for a fair review.

The Good:

Characters: I loved Thomas from the first book, The Sin Collector. I was excited to see what history made Thomas into the man he was. I was not let down. We get to see Thomas struggle between love and duty. You got a reel feeling for him and the other characters. I'm hoping to see more of Emmilina in later books.

I really like what Jessica Fortunato did with Thomas. The story line was very interesting and I always like to know more about certain characters that appear in books, I really believe that it helps you enter the world created by the author in a more realistic manner. I think that what I loved most about the book was being able to understand what the protection ritual was all about. Earlier in the year I read Jessica Fortunato’s debut novel The Sin Collector, book one in her Sin Collector Trilogy. The book was a refreshing take on the paranormal in the sense that Fortunato dug up a little known (at least to me) mythical being sometimes known as a Sin-Eater or Collector. That alone had me had me wanting to read the book, and I wasn’t disappointed.

The book was a refreshing take on the paranormal in the sense that Fortunato dug up a little known (at least to me) mythical being sometimes known as a Sin-Eater or Collector. That alone had me had me wanting to read the book, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Not too long after the author allowed the fans to choose which character from the book they’d like to read as the star of a short story. Thomas won with flying colors. There was a good amount of intrigue into his past that I wanted his story to be told as well. This short story is the product of that voting process.

Fortunato’s writing style comes through in Thomas just as much as it did in her longer debut novel. This was great to see because sometimes an author can’t translate their normal style to the shorter form of a short story. The mechanics are just different, but that doesn’t seem to have gotten in Fortunato’s way.

The pace was fast, which is one of the things I loved about The Sin Collector. Also, while it’s easy to speed through, the it doesn’t let you breeze over the words. Some fast paced stories can easily be read and forgotten. With Thomas there is nothing lost along the way. The pace just helps the reader gain the information that they long for; Thomas’s history.

Did I like Thomas’s character even more after knowing where he came from and what he was doing long before what we know from Book 1? Affirmative! He was already one of my favorite characters, but this story was essential to locking him in as one of my favorite characters. Was his story all that I had been waiting for? Affirmative; it was satisfying and more. I had no idea what I was going to be reading since I didn’t have much to work with. He was very mysterious. What takes place in this story reveals all that was needed to be known…but then it leaves some more questions after it’s done.

I can’t get into the questions that arise. I’m pretty sure I have the answers, but you’ll need to read this story for yourself. I refuse to spoil anything about Thomas. I will say one things though, please read The Sin Collector before you read The Sin Collector Thomas.(less)

It also takes you more in depth into the protection ritual practiced by the Collectors, as well as Collector lore that could very well become important later on (I hope). Focusing on the two most influential parts of Thomas’ life, it is a sweet slice of tragic love and duty. Of what it really means to serve selflessly, to be a Collector. While it left out some details that I really craved (e.g. the sin-eating ritual), I definitely enjoyed it.

Plot (4/5): In such a short work, Fortunato is clever enough to focus on small snippets of time, layered upon each other to give the background we need. My favorite scenes described Thomas’ efforts in World War II, though I wish there had been more views into the actual battles. I thought it dragged a little during some of the exposition, but for the most part, it was a fast-paced read. However, my main concern is the lack of attention paid to sin collecting. Like the first book, it talks about the sin-eating ritual but never goes into depth. I want to know what it involves. How you do it. What it feels like, viscerally. I hope to see this in the next installment.

Concept (5/5): As I said for the first book, very original. Fortunato takes a little-known myth and makes it her own. With all the allure of vampires but none of the blood sucking, the Collectors have a nicely fleshed-out mythos that kept me flipping pages, even during slower parts.

Characters (4/5): Thomas was the deepest of the characters, since we saw through his eyes. I also really enjoyed Cricket. Though he played a small role, I thought it was a very important one in the shaping of Thomas’ attitude towards his duty. I thought Emmilina and Lucy could have been fleshed out more. They felt flat to me, props more than people. I would have liked to see a little more what made them so likeable and unique to Thomas.

Style (5/5): Simple and clear, with some very pretty descriptions here and there. Like much YA writing, Fortunato’s style doesn’t try to compete with its subject matter and get too clever for its own good. It’s here to show you Thomas’ world without getting in the way. If you like a sparse, plot-heavy style, it’s perfect for you. If you like something more flowery, there is less of this, but Fortunato still can write some very lovely descriptions. I never had trouble picturing where I was.

Mechanics (5/5): Some of the problems of the last book (e.g. misplaced commas) have been ironed out in this one. I didn’t notice any distracting typos or grammatical mistakes. It was nicely polished.

Take Home Message: A fun look into the history behind the Collectors. A great quick read.(less)

Very interesting story about the early years of Thomas as a Sin Collector. Obviously, you need to read The Sin Collector first to fully understand this story. Otherwise, you would be quite at lost. This short story helps to understand better some events that happen in the original book, and it also sets the ground for future events, since there are open questions. When I read book #1 of the series earlier this year, I immediately fell in love with the story. Jessica says she based the heroine of her book, Liliana, on the many extraordinary women in her life.

"Firstly, I named her Liliana, the name I would have given my own daughter were I to have had a little girl. She however has very little of my own personality in her in my opinion. I tried to give Liliana the best attributes of each of these amazing women in my life.
There was never anyone as bold as my Aunt Lynda. I wanted Liliana to be strong and self reliant, and to never back down from a fight.
I also wanted her to be balanced, and so I wanted to bring the type of selfless kindness to her demeanor that my beloved Aunt Dolly brings to everything she does.
You could say I sprinkled in a bit of my Mother as well, since there is no one in the world more battle scarred, but resilient and hopeful.
Lastly, I realized the one thing my character was missing. The drive that my sister Juliana brings to whatever life throws at her. I would like to think that Liliana is the epitome of what all women can be."

Jessica is already halfway through writing the second installment in "The Sin Collector" series. She hopes that every person who reads the story falls in love with the characters as she did. When I asked about the book dedication, she had this to say.

"This book is dedicated wholeheartedly to my Grandma, who taught me from a young age the pure magic that can always be found in a book. Also I would be remiss to not thank an old friend Melissa Brandt. She was among my first readers, and her encouragement to see my book through was immeasurable."

Before I concluded the interview, I simply had to ask her the question she imposes on all her readers. What was your first sin?

"That question literally made me laugh out loud," Jessica says, "I guess my first sin was an act of thievery at the impressionable age of six. I stole a handful of Swedish fish candies from the small store up the street. I suppose ever since then you could say the sins just keep piling up."(less)
