Laura Cunningham is a jewelry maker specializing in beautiful charms, lives with her long-term boyfriend Jack and has a secret side to herself that she’s desperate to keep contained. When she’s commissioned to create a personalized charm bracelet for Rob Blake’s wife Cat, Laura ends up immersed in their lives and subsequently awakens a part of herself that she’s struggled to keep dormant.

So the not so great. The enigma of Laura’s past took up the vast majority of The Perfect Present and made it

After recently reading my first novel by Karen Swan, Christmas at Tiffany's which I thoroughly enjoyed, I was excited to start another christmas-themed novel by her. My expectations were pretty high.

Unfortunately I couldn't really connect with this book which was pretty much the "fault" of the main protagonist, Laura. I found her weird and couldn't really get emotionally connected with her despite what she has been through in her life. Kitty was the only character I absolutely loved. I could ide

Kritik:

Love is not a strong enough word for this book. The description on the back of the book does it no justice at all. The themes in this story run the gamut yet are so artfully woven together: love, passion, honesty, friendship, and loss. Karen Swan is a masterful storyteller, her stories draw you in and keep you turning the pages and burning the midnight oil. No spoilers here, but I will say I can usually guess an ending and I was definitely surprised, which I loved. And the questions it asks ...more

I really enjoyed this book but have to say not as much as Karen swan's last novel 'Christmas at Tiffany's' My only slight criticism is that I thought It was long winded and could have been done in less than the 500+ pages. I liked the main character Laura and loved how her life was revealed slowly throughout the book. Also loved rob and kitty but really disliked cat. All in all a good read with a predictable but good ending!

I'm glad I read this book a second time before giving my review. There's just so much going on! It's a more complicated plot this time as compared to Christmas at Tiffany's (stories are unrelated, just that this one was released a year later than the latter) but nevertheless, Karen Swan delivers a spellbinding story with exciting characters.

Somehow I can identify myself with Laura. I found myself crying when I read the goodbye letter her mother wrote. I wished my mum had a chance to write somet

A story revolving around a man obsessively in love with his wife, and requests a specialist jewellery maker to make a special gift for his wife birthday, but his wife is not what she appears to be, very good book.

A charming festive tale with many twists and turns.

Beautiful, beautiful story. I could not put it down. The book begins with a letter from a dying mother to her six-year old twin girls, dated July 1981. We know the girls are called Lilibet and Laura, and from the letter we sense that Mummy was a lovely, funny single mother.

Years later Laura is grown up and only wears red shoes. This Laura a bit of a recluse and makes charms bracelets. Her studio is a converted keep that can only be reached in low tide, she lives with her boyfriend Jack and terr

For 99p I thought I'd give this book a go and it is by far the best book I've read in some time.

Laura is a jeweller, living in a small village with her loving boyfriend Jack and being big sister to her best friend Fee. The book opens with a letter from Laura's mother to both Laura & her twin sister Lily aged 6 as she prepares to die. No mention of this is made throughout the book as it focuses entirely on Laura and her mysterious new client Rob who commissions Laura to make a charm necklace

This is the most enchanting story I have ever read, and I have red a lot of books! Laura’s had a tough past and you never quite fully find out why, which makes the story so intriguing and hard to put down. Now running her commission-only jewellery business, Laura’s content and has a quiet place by the sea with her boyfriend and dog, but when Rob Blake demands she design a necklace with 7 unique charms for his wife for Christmas, she taken aback by his manner. Money is no object for Jack, and ...more

Having just read a few reviews I found myself feeling differently about my relationship (as the reader) with Laura. While others found her hard to like, I instantly saw something of myself within her character so perhaps viewed her with a biased opinion. Laura's desperate need for isolation is wrapped up in a grey and bleak landscape that the writer paints for us. It was well written, especially in comparison to other drivel in the same genre, but unfortunately I can't praise it further than ...more

2.5 stars. I don't know how I feel about this book. It was an okay read. It was engaging and I liked learning about the characters but I felt like a lot of the book could be cut out as a lot the long descriptions of mundane things were unnecessary. The author is a great writer but the descriptions of the scenery and rooms and houses were sometimes too long and cumbersome for me.(view spoiler) ...more

A lovely story by a great British author. Set in England Verbier, Switzerland, this is a story about Laura, a Jeweller, who is commissioned to create the perfect gift for Rob Blake's wife Cat. As part of the project, she has to interview Cat's closest friends and family, and so becomes a part of their glamorous world, which is not what it seems. Author Karen Swan has created an novel about personal growth and the power of secrets to hold you back and set you free,

I loved this book. I read Christmas at Tiffany's last year and thought it was brilliant so I had high hopes for this one.

This was a beautiful love story but also a wonderful story about a young womans journey to find her true self again after an awful tragedy in her life.

I loved the way Karen Swan didn't reveal why Laura was pretending to be something she wasn't all at once and just gave little bits away. Slowly but surely its revealed what this character has gone through and the sadness and lo

This is the second book I've read by Karen Swan and I loved it. The opening letter from a mum to her twin daughters Laura and Lillibet, you know something's happened but not quite sure what. The story concentrates on Laura and her boyfriend, Jack and best friend Fee, but all is not quite as it seems. Laura has a business in Suffolk but what's she hiding from and her world will be turned upside down at the arrival of Robert Blake.

Its a long book, but I got so engrossed into the story that I've r

I quite enjoyed this! The characters were interesting and the story kept me engaged even though it was so looooooong. I didn't like the main characters, Laura and Cat,very much but I was sucked into the mystery of Laura's past and the drama of Cat's life. There were a few issues that the editor should have caught that were annoying but nothing too horrible. Near the end the necklace changes to a bracelet, then back to a necklace. I knew what was meant but the mistake it was a bit jarring. ...more
